Chairman Adrian introduced John Pawley, a Heyfield identity and well known builder. John outlined to us the harrowing story of his families battle to support his Ice addicted son. Three years ago, John s son turned to drugs after a breakup with his wife and two children. His addiction has had a devastating effect on the whole family. Ice is an insidious drug which becomes addictive very quickly and is almost impossible to quit. John s son quickly became involved with criminal elements and the police finally resulting in being bashed and hospitalized for 7 months. Although obviously a terrible incident, John and his son are thankful that because of this he is finally off the drugs but is always susceptible to their influence. For this reason, he needs ongoing support as he slowly recovers. John believes that society needs to concentrate on preventative educational awareness measures with young children so they will avoid the drug in later life. Once addicted, very few are able to recover despite the best efforts of family, friends and supportive rehab programs. John referred us to the Ice Meltdown Project for more information and perhaps finding a way that Rotary can assist.
