YOUR ITINERARY TO PHOTO ADVENTURE... Day 1. Arrival in Ulaanbaatar June 6 No activities today until we meet at 4pm. Here Darran and Pearce will go through your adventures to come and offer a short workshop. Accommodation and your first dinner are included tonight. Overnight in 3/4 Star hotel - (D) Day 2 - Ulaanbaatar/ Mongol Nomads/ Khar Bukh Balgas/ Ugii Lake - June 7 Today we drive back in time, to a place that recreates the lives of n nomads at the beginning of the 20th century. This was when gained its independence from the Qing Dynasty and established itself as a reemerging nation under a living god-king. We shall attend a demonstration of how the nomads lived their lives during this era, and we shall see a stunning performance of n horsemanship. After lunch we continue our journey west as we arrive at Khar Bukh Balgas. Built during the Kitan Period, at about 1000 AD, this was a part of a chain of fortresses that were used to govern and control the northern region and borders of the Khitan (Kidan) State. Upon arrival to the site, we will explore the ruins, and learn about the various kingdoms that dominated during that era. In the afternoon we arrive at the shores of Ugii Lake, where many nomadic families spend the summer. Overnight in a Ger camp - (B,L,D) Day 3. Ugii Lake/ Kultigen/ Khar Balgas/ Tsenkher Hot Springs - June 8 Our first visit of the day is at the Kultigen monument. The massive stone tomb was built in honor of a Turkic prince and warrior killed in a battle that took place not far away. The stone is engraved in both Chinese and Runic scripts. From here we proceed to Khar Balgas. Built at about 744 AD, Ordu Baliq has flourished as the capital of the Uyghur Empire until 840 AD, when it was destroyed by the Yenisei Kyrgys. Though not much is left to date, this city has spread over 25 sq. km, and ruled an area that spread over the majority of now days, the Chinese Xingjian Province, and Manchuria, at total of 5,500,000 sq. km. In the afternoon we reach the area ns call the paradise of the horse herders for its lush grasses and open valleys. We drive to the Tsenkher hot springs, where water flows out of the ground at about 80 C, and where we can enjoy a relaxing soak. Overnight in Ger camp - (B,L,D) PRE TOUR - June Darran and Pearce will arrive in Ulaanbaatar, at least 24 hours before Day 1 of the itinerary. Accommodation and tour services start for this tour - DAY 1. Julia can book more accommodation if required. This timing will give you a chance to relax and acclimatise to the new time zone. We generally commence booking pre/ post tour accommodation/flights about 8/9 months before departure. Note that some of the accommodation on this tour is basic. It is comfortable and clean, just without western standard services. It is a great facet of the adventure! FINAL ITINERARY Note that a final itinerary will be sent to you about one month before departure. PAGE 4

Day 4. Hiking Around Tsenkher June 9 Today we will take a short drive to the trailhead where we begin our day hike a truly enchanting walk up a stream where we hop from one stone to another, to the top of the hill for an amazing view of the surrounding valleys. In this part of Arkhangai the wildflowers are plentiful, and it is likely you will see families cutting hay for winter fodder for their animals. From here we will hike back down through a thick pine forest to the hot springs. Overnight in a Ger camp - (B,L,D) Day 5. Tsenkher/ The Red Waterfall/ The Orkhon Valley June 10 We leave Tsenkher, and follow the flow of the Red River, along the eastern slopes of the Khangai Mountain. The Khangai (in n- prosperous) Mountain is s second largest mountain range, and dominating the central n landscapes. To its south, the vast Gobi Desert, and to the north, a land of plenty of water, and excellent graze for the herds. We drive through vast lush green meadows, pine forests, and mountain passes, on our way to the Red Waterfall. Here we will take an easy hike along the canyon floor, and end up at the pool at the bottom of the Red Waterfall. For the brave at heart, a cool swim awaits! We then take a one hour s drive to a ger camp located at an excellent view point over the Orkhon River s canyon. Overnight in a Ger camp - (B,L,D) Day 6 - The Orkhon Valley/ Tuvkhon Monastery/ Kharkhorin June 11 Driving north along the Orkhon River, we will visit one of s most impressive monasteries, where we take a 2.5 hours hike. Located at the top of a high hill with a view of endless pine forests, Tuvkhon Monastery was established during the 1650 s by Zanbazar, one of s most respected religious leaders. Fleeing the Manchu Emperor, the Zanbazar built a monastery in this hidden place, using a natural system of caves and adding small wooden buildings. In the afternoon we keep on driving up the river to Kharkhorin. Overnight in a Ger camp - (B,L,D) PAGE 5

Day 7 - Kharkhorin/ Elsiin Tasarkhai June 12 Built by Chinggis Khan about 800 years ago, Kharkhorin, better known as Karakorum, was famed throughout Asia as the capital of the Mongol Empire. Within the walls of this spectacular city kings were chosen, laws made and the fate of the next city to be conquered were determined. We will visit the ruins of the old city, the Erdene Zuu monastery and other historical monuments in the area. After lunch leave Kharkhorin for another one hour s drive. Marking the northern edge of the great Gobi Desert, Elsiin Tasarkhai is a sand dune that stretches over 130 km north into the heart of Central. At the afternoon we will go for a hike along the sand dune, and if weather permit we will enjoy a beautiful sunset over the dune. Overnight in a Ger camp - (B,L,D) Day 8 - Elsiin Tasarkhai/ Hustaiin Nuruu SPA/ Ulaanbaatar June 13 We begin the day with a few hours ride on the desert ship, the Bactrian two-humped camel, through the spectacular sand dune. After lunch we depart the dune, and head towards Hustaiin Nuruu Strictly Protected Area (SPA). The SPA was established as part of a unique project to reintroduce the world s last surviving wild horses back to their natural environment. On the brink of extinction during the last century, only a very few Takhi or Przewalski s horse were left in zoos around Europe. This graceful steppe horse was returned to, and today, thanks to this special project, two herds again roam the n steppes. Late in the evening we take another two hours drive back to the n capital. Overnight in a 4-star hotel - (B,L,D) Day 9 - Ulaanbaatar/ Terelj June 14 Morning departure to Gorki-Terelj National Park. The park features unique rock formations, scenic valleys, a winding river, and restful groves of trees. Many nomads live in the park itself, where they find good grazing for their animals. As we arrive in the park we take an easy hike to the famous Turtle Rock, a symbol of wisdom and longevity to the n people. We then continue hiking to Ariabal Temple. The temple has been recently reconstructed, after the original temple had been destroyed during the communist purges of the 1930 s. A great site of tranquility, it functions today as a meditation center to Buddhist monks. Overnight in a ger camp - B,L,D) PAGE 6

Day 10. Terelj/ Chinggis Monument/ Ulaanbaatar June 15 After breakfast we leave the park and drive to the newly constructed Chinggis Khan Monument. Rising 40 meters in height over the surrounding steppes, this mighty structure plays a major symbol to the renewing n nation, after more than 300 years of foreign sovereignty over its people and territory. We then head back to Ulaanbaatar, and visit the National History Museum, which holds a permanent exhibition on the different civilizations that have inhabited the territory of from prehistoric times to the present, including a significant display of objects from the era of the Great Mongol Empire. If time permits, we also pay a quick visit to the Natural History Museum, where a permanent exhibition of the flora and fauna of is displayed, including excellent examples of dinosaur skeletons excavated from the Gobi Desert. In the evening we will enjoy a farewell dinner, followed with a trip to the top of the Zaisan Hill, to enjoy the view of the city at night. Overnight in a 3/4-star hotel - B,L,D) Day 11. Departure from Ulaanbaatar June 16 After breakfast at the hotel, we drive to Chinggis Khan International Airport for our departure flight. (B) OR... Interested in more adventures? Why not join our linked adventure to the incredible Gobi Desert. This will be different to the main tour and while it offers some culture, it will target the amazing sand dunes and landscapes of the Gobi Desert. (B,L,D) - Confirms if Breakfast - Lunch - Dinner - are included that day. Itinerary and price is subject to change. PAGE 7
