Expected versions The Landlord and the Tenant The landlord and his tenant had been bargaining on the deal. The tenant had been looking through the papers trying to find one that he liked. The landlord offered to throw in snow tires, a CD player, and a new air conditioner for free. What finally convinced the tenant was the low price. The tenant took it for a quick spin around the block, liked the way it handled and agreed on the deal. The tenant paid the landlord with money had loaned from his mother. Probe: car (P) Probe: apartment (N) Dinner for Billy and his Father Billy and his father were deciding what to have for dinner. They had a limited choice since this was only a weekend camping trip. They decided on hot dogs and baked beans. They had earlier gathered all the wood and twigs they needed. Once the food was cooking, they realized how hungry they were. Billy never knew that cooking outdoors would be so hard. There was so much more to it than gathering wood. He was glad his father was there to show him how it was done properly. Probe: campfire (P) Probe: stove (N) The Hospital Orderly The hospital orderly had been diabetic since childhood. This had been a very stressful day. He felt that he needed his afternoon injection right away. He looked around for an empty room. Once inside, he prepared the syringe and gave himself an injection. Within a few minutes he began to feel much better. The injections were a often nuisance but they allowed him an almost completely normal life despite his diabetes. Since he couldn't find a trash can, he put the disposable syringe in his pocket and left the room. Probe: insulin (P) Probe: heroin (N) The Artist The artist was expecting a phone call from the doctor's office. It came one day while he was busily painting. He was concerned about the results of the series of lab tests he had taken. The artist was told that he had three more months. He was shocked. He had not been feeling well, but he did not expect to hear that kind of news from his doctor. His doctor expressed his sympathy and hung up. Suddenly, the painting was no longer important. The artist mixed himself a stiff drink.

Probe: live (P) Probe: deadline (N) Carol's Trip into Town Carol was not feeling well and decided to find out what was wrong. She called her friend to ask her for some advice. The friend told Carol what to do. Carol went into town and entered the large building hoping to find some books relevant to her problem. She walked through the doors and took an elevator to the third floor. She found a book that seemed relevant to her problem. Carol then went to the main desk and checked out the book for two weeks so that she could read it at home. When she left the building she saw that it had started snowing hard and she hailed a taxi to take her home. Probe: library (P) Probe: hospital (N) The Company Pilot The company pilot had been waiting for the game. To pass time, he had been playing cards and was getting bored. He was glad starting time had arrived. It was lucky he had the day off and could watch the game with his friends. Just before the start, the company pilot adjusted all the controls. The reception was perfect due to the clear day. He sat back and watched as the game began. Sandwiches and drinks were served at halftime. Watching sporting events with friends was the company pilot's way of relaxing when he was home and not working. Probe: television (P) Probe: airplane (N) The Big Game Hunter A famous big game hunter was on a photographic safari in the jungles of India. He had hunted tigers for years, but never for pictures. The first afternoon in the jungle, the hunter found a tiger's trail and followed it into the underbrush. Once he spotted the tiger in a small clearing, he moved as quietly as he could and prepared for the shot. The hunter focused on the tiger, held his breath and took the shot. He hoped the picture would be perfect; the bright sunshine should help. Just then the tiger heard the click of the shutter and ran back into the jungle. Probe: camera (P) Probe: rifle (N) The Firefighter When the firefighter looked down, he could see the extent of the forest fire below as he passed over it. He checked his parachute. As he looked down, the firefighter took a deep breath to calm himself. The firefighter signaled that he was ready. He said a quick prayer and then jumped. His parachute opened

immediately. The long ride to the ground was slow and he had time to clearly observe the forest fire below. Fortunately, an easterly wind was blowing the smoke away from him. Probe: airplane (P) Probe: building (N) Mr. and Mrs. Jones Mr. and Mrs. Jones were getting ready for the afternoon's events. They were happier than they had been in a long time. Their 23 year old son, John, had been treated for cancer. Being a good Christian family, they had prayed for a cure. John's latest tests indicated the cancer had been licked. Because of the good news, John and his fiancé were able to follow through with their plans. John, in the meantime, was also getting ready. He knew his parents had some doubts about his fiancé but John also knew he had made the right choice. He was excited about this new phase of his life. When the Jones arrived at the church at 2:00 P.M., they were greeted by the parents of John's fiancé. Probe: wedding (P) Probe: funeral (N) A House for Sale The burglar was driving through a high income neighborhood. He passed a large home with a 'For Sale' sign out in the front yard. He made an appointment for the next day to be shown the inside of the house. When he arrived for the showing, he took his time inspecting details such as the locks on doorways and windows. He inspected the details of the home because he was very interested in it. One night he returned to the house and broke into the back door. He stole all of the valuable antiques that had gone so well with the old Tudor style home. Probe: robbery (P) Probe: buyer (N) The Businessman The businessman enjoyed being out in the fresh air and getting his daily exercise while riding to work. On his way to work one morning, the businessman stopped at a gas station. While he was there he asked the attendant to tighten a spoke and put some oil on the chain. He then paid the attendant and pedaled to work. Luckily, the businessman had been the only customer at the station and he would not be late for work after all. Probe: bike (P) Probe: car (N) A Rainy Day John was standing at the street corner waiting for his wife to pick him up. Suddenly, the rain got heavier and the puddle next to him started getting bigger. John opened his umbrella and continued to wait.

Moments later he noticed a bus speeding in his direction. John had not thought to back away from the curb. The bus went through the puddle next to him at top speed. John cursed as the bus sped past him. He tried wiping the muddy water from his pants but it was no use. He decided to stand further away from the curb. Two minutes later his wife arrived to pick him up and John explained what happened. Probe: splash (P) Probe: bus stop (N) Unexpected Versions The Landlord and the Tenant The landlord and his tenant had been bargaining on the deal. The tenant had been looking through the papers trying to find one that he liked. The landlord was anxious to close the deal and offered to throw in a brand new air conditioner and stereo system. What finally convinced the tenant was the low price. The tenant took it for a quick spin around the block, liked the way it handled and agreed on the deal.
