feature article Scone Motor Inn Adds Further Silver to The Trophy Cabinet Story by Katrina Partridge Scone Motor Inn and Conference Centre has received further accolades at this year s Hunter and Central Coast Awards for Excellence in Tourism. Tourism professionals gathered at Cypress Lakes Resort, Hunter Valley last Thursday for the awards ceremony and gala dinner celebrating the industry s leading contributors and recognising the high standards of the Hunter and Central Coast tourism industries. Winners were announced in 27 categories with an additional 11 silver awards and four bronze awards being recognised. These outstanding results refl ect not only the growth of the tourism industry, but the professionalism and world-class nature of the both Hunter and Central Coast s tourism products and services. Scone Motor Inn and Conference Centre was awarded silver in the Meetings and Business Tourism category following the work of proprietors Trevor & Joanne Kratzmann to enhance the business facilities at the Motor Inn by including 3 new meeting rooms in the upstairs section of the existing conference centre. Construction of new meeting rooms commenced in April and was made possible by funding support received from Destination NSW through the Regional Tourism Product Development Funding Program, said Trevor. The conference centre caters to the local as well as the regional market with the new rooms ideal for larger groups requiring break-out rooms and group work options. The offi cial opening of the new conference and meeting rooms takes place on 14 September with the Member for Upper Hunter Tourism, the Hon. George Souris in attendance. The air conditioned conference and meeting rooms cater for groups of between 10 and 60 people. Catering and accommodation packages for any business function are also available. The 3 new meeting rooms suit 4 to 12 attendees. Scone Motor Inn has been the recipient of a slew of awards in recent years including Australian Accommodation Assoc. (AAA) Property of the Year 2011, the AAA Gold Award Winner Superior Accommodation 2011, Hunter & Central Coast Tourism Awards Hall of Fame 2011, Australian Tourism Gold Award Winner Standard Accommodation 2010 & 2011, NSW Tourism Gold Award Winner 2010, 2011, and Hunter Tourism Gold Awards Winner 2009, 2010 & 2011. Hopefully we can encourage other operators to see Scone as a tourist destination and that there is potential to tap into that market, said Trevor. food & wine Scone Homegrown + Handmade Spring Market Spring is in the air and the popular Scone Homegrown + Handmade market is set for Saturday 15 September at Kerv Café. The Market continues to unveil a range of new initiatives for stallholders and market goers alike. In an exciting fi rst, the EVENT storeroom will host a Spring inspired Market Eve Dinner at Kerv café on Friday 14 September. The set tasting menu has been specifi cally designed by the EVENT storeroom and Angela McMurray (The Twisted Carrot & Pretty Twisted Knots). The dinner will be priced on a per person basis and will feature produce and home cooking that will be available for purchase at the markets the following day. The Spring market will entertain market goers with a Handmade Creations Fashion Parade on market day: stallholders being invited to participate and showcase their spring fashions, jewellery, hats and accessories. In a further nod to enhancing the market experience for buyers and sellers alike well-known retailer Anne Quinell from the Serendipity Collection has been retained as a consultant for the September market to assist with the set up and display of the Co-Op trading table. Anne will also visit each stall site to answer any questions stallholders may have on presentation and styling products to make them as visually appealing as possible. In October his year Anne will have owned and operated Serendipity for 10 years, says Amelia. Located in the main street of Scone, Serendipity retails in accessories, furniture, homewares, jewellery and giftware. We certainly look forward to having Anne share her retail trading tips with us. Market sites are again limited so interested stall holders are encouraged to book quickly to secure one of the few remaining sites, advised Amelia. For questions regarding the Spring market please contact Amelia Wilkinson on 0400 099 761 or info@theeventstoreroom.com.au. You can also fi nd the Scone Homegrown + Handmade Market on Facebook. Devil Ark was nominated alongside prestigious organizations including Taronga Zoo and Perth Zoo in the Innovation Award category. ZAA s Executive Director, Martin Phillips said: The award is to recognise innovations the industry are making towards the care and recovery of species. This region is recognised as a world leader in conservation and people are looking at Devil Ark as a model that can be used for species recovery around the world. Devil Ark s General Manager, Mary Rayner, accepted the award at last night s gala dinner. She was thrilled, saying We are extremely proud to be recognised for our innovation. With our second successful breeding season behind us, we now house over 100 devils at Devil Ark. We are delighted with the progress and are well on the way to reaching our goal of 360 devils by 2016. The Devil Ark concept is innovative as it is a fi rst free range conservation project of its kind in Australia and possibly the world. The Ark is the brainchild of the Australian Reptile Park and is gaining world recognition through continued interest from both international media and international zoos. One of the innovative elements of this ambitious project is that a medium-sized, privately owned zoo was able to build a facility from an original idea that aims to yield a greatly improved system for maintaining Tasmanian devils. To add to the innovation this medium zoo continues to cover the daily running costs of the facility from having developed a fundraising/marketing arm whilst at the same time taking the Australian Reptile Park to heights it has never seen before (ARP has just recorded its best year ever in both visitation and revenue). With the report published in Sydney University s Public Library of Science journal yesterday stating that DFTD is not weakening with time and showing no signs of slowing down, researchers described captive breeding as our major hope, saying it is essential to save this iconic species from disappearing completely. your local clubs Scone Jump Club Marcia 0407 403 802 Jude 0439 778 093 sconejumpclub@hotmail.com www.sconehorsetrials.com.au Upper Hunter Team Penning 0427 289 131 uhtp@hotmail.com www.uhteampenning.com Riding for Disabled Pres: Chris Hayes (02) 6541 3847 Anne-Marie Williams amglwilliams@skymesh.com.au Riding & carriage driving: Tues and Thurs (2nd and 3rd school terms). leisure & lifestyle Muswellbrook Students Learn Swimming and Water Safety Skills More than 240 students and teachers from Muswellbrook South Public School have begun a 16 week swimming programme to learn the fundamental skills of swimming and water safety thanks to a partnership with Coal & Allied. Muswellbrook South Public School Principal Rebecca Langdon said the programme aims to ensure the students from years two to six can safely and confi dently enjoy a range of aquatic environments and activities. It s the fi rst time we ve run a comprehensive programme like this and we re very pleased that the Coal & Allied Community Development Fund has come on board to help fund it, Ms Langdon said. It s such an important safety initiative given that a lot of the families within our school community cannot afford swimming lessons yet many of the children go swimming or playing in the Hunter River or local dams. The programme runs all day every Friday for 16 weeks and will include an assessment at the end where the students will be tested on their swimming and water safety skills. It will be expected that they ll be able to swim at least 25 metres using a formal stroke and be able to show some basic swim survival skills such as treading water and fl oating. Ms Langdon said that the programme also includes the accreditation of two teachers so they will be able to teach basic swimming and survival skills to the students in the future. One of the highlights about this programme is the fact that we re able to train up two teachers, which will help the school, and ultimately our school families, reduce costs Pictured: in pool left to right Billy Nichols, Brady Laughton, Sarah McBride, Lauren Korman, Alannah Miller, school teacher Sarah Milton and volunteer swim instructor Roger Mullins. The programme is also helping the more talented or skilled students get more training and improve their swimming techniques so they can compete at a higher level such as at the local swimming club or beyond. Muswellbrook South Public School P&C President Megan Parker said the programme has evoked an overwhelmingly positive response from school parents. We ve already had a number of parents come up and say that they re really happy that we re running the programme, Ms Parker said. They see the enormous health benefi ts in increasing their child s physical activity but also that it s an important life skill to have and could potentially save someone s life. Coal & Allied Principal Community Investment Stephen Sneddon said the Coal & Allied Community Development Fund was proud to partner with the school and the community in developing the water safety skills of the students, teachers and parents. Coal & Allied is committed to working with our community partners to help build stronger and sustainable communities in the region, Mr Sneddon said. We look forward to seeing how the students skills develop across the 16 week period as well as the teachers in training to help make it a sustainable programme for the school in the future.
