YEAR 11 Games - Hiking As part of the Year 11 PE programme students will take part in a 6 week hiking unit of work during their double PE lesson on a Wednesday morning periods 1 and 2. Students will be allocated to one of 3 groups and will take part in this activity in a 6 week block either during September - October 2017, November - December 2017 or January - February 2018. The 6-week unit of work will involve hiking the first 6 stages of the Wilson Trail. The attached document outlines the programme for this unit of work. Logistics: In order to complete a worthwhile hike in the time available students will need to meet and register at different locations over the 6 weeks. This will be instead of coming to school at the start of the school day on a Wednesday for the duration of the 6 week block. Two of these start points are on HK Island, three are in Kowloon and one will be at school as it cannot be easily accessed by public transport (Wilson Stage 5). This means that students will need to be organised in advance with completing homework and managing laptops / books / school uniform etc. as it will not be sensible to carry a heavily laden schoolbag. Why? It s real - we are incredibly fortunate in Hong Kong to have numerous National Parks with well laid out and safe trails that take you through some stunning countryside. Hiking gets you away from your desk / laptop / TV. It gets you out into nature and back to reality It s healthy - here is growing research that shows the benefits of hiking / walking as a way of staying physically active, reducing disease risk and mental health benefits. It s simple - it s just an extension of something you do every day and everyone can find a pace that works for them. It s cheap - especially on the trails we will be following in HK as all you need are sensible shoes, some comfortable clothing / pack and you re ready to go. It s forever - hiking is an activity you can enjoy your whole life. It s low impact and you control the intensity / duration so unlike a lot of sports that have limited life spans because of injury or logistical challenges you can keep doing it. With the exception of Stage 5 all start points can be accessed by public transport with a 7.45am start time.
