AUGUST 2 AUGUST 23: GUILIN LANGUAGE AND BUSINESS During the Guilin portion of the China Seminar, students will improve their Chinese language ability and deepen their understanding of important cultural themes and business trends in China. Students will advance their language skills through 20 weekly hours of Mandarin classes at CLI, daily interaction with a range of Chinese peers and teachers, and constant immersion in the language learning environment. The following includes a list of lectures, company visits, cultural activities, and travel excursions that will be included in this year s. INTENSIVE CHINESE LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION In addition to facilitating China Seminars for leading academic institutions around the world, CLI operates one of the foremost institutes for Chinese language acquisition in China. As part of the HKUST China Seminar, students will be provided with: 16 weekly hour of small group Mandarin instruction (no more than five students per class) 4 weekly hours of one-on-one Mandarin instruction GUILIN GUEST LECTURES CLI offers lecture opportunities to students both independently and through our partner institution, Guangxi Normal University (GXNU). Below is a sampling of lecture topics that have been offered in the past. At least two lectures will be made available to HKUST students during the China Seminar. CLI hosts a variety of additional learning-based activities, events, and excursions each week throughout the year which are open to all students. Visit Guangxi Normal University (GXNU) for tour and direct cultural exchange with local students Climb Chuan Mountain for scenic view of Guilin and enjoy dinner at the foot of the mountain Visit a local Buddhist monastery within the caves of Seven Star Park Sample tea and learn about Daoist philosophy and worldview at a local Daoist teahouse Take a walking tour of Guilin s famous Four Lakes, Two Rivers region WEEKEND TRAVEL EXCURSIONS The following weekend travel excursions will be included in the : Yangshuo (four hours south of Guilin by boat, two hours by bus) Take the famous Li River boat cruise to Yangshuo Tour Yangshuo s countryside and karst landscape Visit the West Street commercial and restaurant district Longsheng Rice Terraces (2.5 hours northwest of Guilin) Participate in meetings with key local leaders Hike from Ping an Village to Dazhai Village through the region s famous rice terraces Please see the following page for additional information.
PROGRAM FEE The per participant program fee for the HKUST Summer 2015 China Seminar, including, but not limited to, all services and specifications listed above and airfare to all program sites is 3,350 USD. A minimum enrollment of 25 participants is required for the program to be held. GUILIN-ONLY PROGRAM OPTION If HKUST prefers students spend the entire four weeks in Guilin (rather than one week in Beijing and three weeks in Guilin), CLI is happy to offer the exact program as described with the one exception of replacing the week in Beijing with an additional week in Guilin. The per participant program fee for a Guilin-only program is 2,885 USD.
