Greetings to all from the Western Slope of Colorado. I m sure you all had fun at the gettogether this month. Charlotte and I would have loved to have been there but we were a little far away in Montrose. I just completed a Rider Course Instructor Certification Program (RCICP) for five new GWRRA Rider Course Instructors (RCIs) in the Advanced Rider Course (ARC). This is for the two wheelers. Charlotte and I arrived in Montrose on Sunday August 7th and have been immersed in the RCICP from 7 AM to 6:30 PM each day. Long days but the end result was very satisfying. The RCICP culminated in a live ARC being taught on Thursday and Friday just prior to and in conjunction with the Colorado District Rally. Colorado District now has two new RCIs. Wyoming District has one new RCI whom many of you know; Steve Hodges. Iowa District has two new RCIs and you may know these two also; John Moravec from Cedar Rapids, IA and Roger (Chief) Munson from Belmond, IA. Everyone did super and you can look forward to some new RCIs at your future ARCs. The opening ceremonies for the Rally occurred while we were on the Range on Friday so we did not get to attend. After a very busy week, Charlotte and I visited the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park on Saturday prior to closing ceremonies. If you haven t visited this National Park yet and are in western Colorado I recommend you stop. The views of the gorge cut by the Gunnison River are simply breathtaking and amazing. We will be heading home this Sunday, August 14th to relieve Carrie, our daughter on house and dog sitting duties. She has been a gem this year for all the absences in the past and those yet to come. Since I was conducting an ARC I needed my two wheeler for Demos and also had to tote a lot of stuff so we took the truck and trailered the Triumph. It felt so very weird going to a motorcycle rally and not riding a motorcycle there. On the upside we did have air conditioning. So, after a few days to recuperate and do laundry, it s on to Wall, SD for our own rally. Hope to see everyone there! Bob and Charlotte
Education Rider Education It s what we are about! Does anyone know who Benny Garcia is? I ll give you a hint. He is the Co-Founder s Bodyguard! At least that s what it says on the back of his GWRRA vest. He is married to Shirley Hildebrand-Garcia. Shirley is one of the co-founders of our organization, originally married to Paul Hildebrand the other Co-Founder. It was great to have these folks at the Colorado District Rally. I hope you can all say hi because they will be at Wing Ding 38 in Billings, MT. So why does this pertain to Rider Education? That s an easy question to answer and most of you, I m sure, know that GWRRA was founded to help Gold Wing Riders ride better. If you attend a GWRRA history seminar or read about our initial years in the Rider Education handbook you will be able to trace that history and emphasis on safe riding. The very reason we are in Montrose is to train new Rider Course Instructors to help our members do just that. Learn to ride more safely by becoming aware of and practicing the precepts of safe riding and to hone those riding skills. Our own Rally is coming up in two weeks where we will emphasize riding our motorcycles safely so that we can enjoy them more and also longer. We will have a Team Riding Seminar on Thursday evening to refresh our skills when riding with a group. You never stop learning. If you know all there is to know about riding I would be willing to bet that you may have forgotten some little tidbit along the way that could save your life someday. We take riding courses and attend Rider Education to keep the memory of all those tidbits focused and useable. After all, it would be good to remember if the front wheel skids during hard braking the front brake should be released and reapplied so that steering control is regained to prevent a crash; now wouldn t it? As Hagrid said in the Harry Potter movie series he just needs to train up some. Couldn t we all train up some to ride more safely? Phantom Rider Educator Nebraska Motorcycle Safety Training (NMST) Presents Motorcycling Is Fun FREE Seminar Series for 2016 Learn more about the details of riding and how to extend your riding abilities through these seminars.
NMST continues our free and informative motorcycling safety community outreach program for 2016. These seminars provide information on riding a motorcycle for both the rider and the co-rider. During this seminar series we will cover numerous topics concerning riding techniques and risk management. Some months will include two seminars (S1 and S2). The seminars are free and all are welcome to attend. Riders and non-riders can to benefit from this information. Come out and learn a little more about riding or just enjoy the camaraderie and discussion of other riders and co-riders. The seminars will be held monthly at the Sarpy County Law Enforcement Center Motorcycle Safety Classroom (1 st floor, southwest corner) on the second Thursday of the month (except as noted). Seminars begin at 7:00 PM and end not later than 9:00 PM. Since our classroom space is limited, please contact our registrar, Pam (402-593-1564), and let her know if you will be attending. Seats will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Calendar of Events Aug 25 ~ District Rally, Wall SD. Check out the District website for more information www.gwrrane.com We are rapidly approaching a very exciting period this year when a great number of activities are happening. We as a Region have already experienced rallies occurring in the Districts of Missouri, Minnesota-North Dakota, and Illinois. Now it is coming up on our turn. Our Nebraska-South Dakota rally (9/25-9/27) promises to be very exciting. To begin with it is being held in Wall, SD. Who hasn t heard of Wall Drug? They are also one of our sponsors this year. Attending the rally just to visit Wall Drug would be enough for many, but there is more, much, much more. We will be on the outskirts of some of the best riding in the USA, the Black Hills. There are National Monuments, National Parks and more. Mount Rushmore National Memorial (NM), Badlands National Park (NP), Devils Tower National Monument (NM), Custer State Park (SP) and some great roads to ride; Iron Mountain Rd., Needles Highway, Nemo Rd and many, many more. Just pick a direction and ride. Riding is what this rally is all about, and that is why we bought the best touring motorcycle in the world, is it not. Please plan on attending! The Chapter does have some duties to perform during the rally as do all the Chapters in our District. We are responsible for manning the Registration Table from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM on Friday morning and we also have Rally Supervisor duties (District equivalent of the Shell Answer Man combined with Sergeant at Arms) from Noon to 2:00 PM, also on Friday. We need volunteers to help out here. Charlotte and I will be manning the Guided/Unguided Rides table so we will all be busy meeting new folks and having fun. Another very important reason to attend the rally is that our Chapter Couple of the Year (COY), John and Cheryl Papson, will be competing for District COY. We all need to come out and support them.
If you are planning on attending the rally, great. If you are on the fence as whether to go or not please seriously consider going. You will be glad you did. The District Staff has to be there Thursday afternoon (9/25) and I will be giving a Team Riding Seminar that evening. The first seminar I gave at a District Rally in Grand Island, as your District Educator, had 97 people attend and I would really like to break that record at this District Rally. Friday and Saturday will have many activities, rides, COY competition, dinners and general good old fun. This is important! Please give Nancy (our Chapter MEC) a call or send her an e-mail (billnan@centurylink.net// (402) 593-8183) letting her know if you will be attending and also when you will be heading to Wall. We would like to put together Chapter rides to Wall, if possible. Also if you can see to helping our Chapter and District by volunteering for a couple of hours out of the 60 or so we will be there, please let her know that also. If you can t contact her, pass the information on to John and Cheryl at the August meeting. Charlotte and I will be in Colorado training new Riding Course Instructors. Thanks and hope to see EVERYONE there. Bob I would like the people who are riding out on Wednesday and those going on Thursday to let me know. It will be helpful especially for those leaving Wednesday so we can get motel reservations for Wednesday night. Also John and Cheryl would like us to wear our chapter shirts or a gold shirt to the COY Selection Friday night to show our chapter support. Nancy James Aug 28 th - Wyoming District along with the NE/SD District is putting together a tour/trip schedule like no other, encompassing a total of 10 days of rallies/conventions when Wing Ding is added into the trip. Starting off in Wall South Dakota on the 25 th of August you can enjoy the NE/SD rally/convention thru the 27 th of August. Traveling on Sunday the 28 th from Wall to Sheridan Wyoming for just under 300 miles. You than can enjoy the Wyoming District rally/convention from the evening of the 28 th thru the morning of the 30 th. Just a few things on the agenda are a welcoming party Sunday night the 28 th, huge BBQ the evening of the 29 th, which is included in the registration fee. We are also trying to put together a dance for Monday night, guided and unguided rides, western history like no other including several top rated western museums, awesome western old down town style shopping, Custer s battle field and last stand, Light parade, and I can t leave out some very awesome mountain and plains riding, just to mention a few. Leaving
Sheridan Wyoming the morning of the 30 th right after a western style no host breakfast of course to send you on your way. You can take one of several beautiful routes to Billings, a couple of which are Beartooth Pass and Chief Joseph Scenic Highway, getting to Billings just in time to enjoy the downtown party the city of Billings is putting on. If you all would be so kind as to forward this e-mail on along with our registration form and information to all your Chapter Directors, so they all can forward onto their members and have a chance to enjoy these awesome 10 days with other GWRRA friends it would be much appreciated. We are getting really excited to host all our GWRRA Friends out West and make sure everyone that joins us knows what Western Hospitality is all about. SEE YOU OUT WEST PARTNER!!!!!
