So the our primary riding season is upon us. And that means Z2 s first short adventure ride to Nauvoo Area of Illinois coming up June 23-25 th.. Chapter IL-Z2 News Jim and Barb Kopchok Chapter Directors Thank you to Don Shore for leading our group after the last monthly meeting to Phillips Park in Aurora to experience Biker Sunday, where hundreds of bikers of all makes and models joined for a party that included vendors, food and music, a bike blessing and then a 60 mile ride. Some of our riders chose to not stay for the entire event and continued on. It was a beautiful day for a ride, if just a bit gusty. A meet up at Calamity Jane s for lunch and we were good to go! Thanks to Bob and Arlene for starting up some mid-week Wednesday rides. The first ride was a success and I m sure we can hear more from Bob at our meeting. While not an official Chapter Z2 ride, some members enjoy the upcoming annual Freedom Run, which takes place June 17 th. The format for that ride has changed a small bit this year with the ride still leaving from Grundy County Speedway to Marseilles, but after the ceremony at the Wall, the party will take place down the street rather than in the middle of town. Barb & I enjoy this charity ride and remembering the many who have given their lives in any of the Middle East conflicts. Thousands of bikers pass by flag waving onlookers along the parade route. Very inspiring. Speaking of our veterans, Bill Bijou, Z2 Special Events Coordinator, invited us last month to the Vietnam Veterans Moving Wall coming to Oswego June 29-July 3 rd. This half sized replica of the Wall in our nation s capital will be on display while Bill and his fellow veterans are volunteering as workers for the event. A moving tribute to our fallen heros. And finally, if Fred Creed is at our meeting we hope to hear about his ride to D.C. with fellow bikers as part of the Rolling Thunder ride. Back home, we have our Nauvoo Area ride. We will have more information at our meeting concerning meet up time and place, and, of course, the information will be posted on our web site. Looking forward to being along the Mississippi and some nice riding weather. Don t forget to make your reservations at the hotel immediately if you are planning on going and to sign up so we can get you any last minute details. share the road. Tony is working on two Mystery Dinner riders and I m sure we will have more detail on these Sunday morning as well. Page 2 Chapter Meeting Location June 2017 Chapter IL-Z2 News For those planning a little further out, July 13-16 th is the Midwest Motorcycle Rally in LaCrosse, WI. Not a Honda event, it is still a popular ride destination for many bikers and a comfortable ride distance for an overnight stay. The Chapter would like to remember Mary Thielenhouse s father who passed away this past month. Our thoughts go to Mary, Butch and family. With so many people heading out on road trips for vacations and more at this time of year, keep your wits about you and eyes on all the road challenges around you. Remember, as we grow older our reaction times are longer, our vision deteriorates and we need to stay focused for our own safety, that of our co-riders, and others who share the road. And one last word of warning for anyone heading east along I80/90 through Indiana. Road construction is in full swing. Having just passed through that area this week the backups were long and slow, all the way up I94 to the Michigan line. Plan accordingly or check ahead on line. See you Sunday with a ride following the meeting, weather permitting. GWRRA Chapter IL-Z2 Meetings: Denny s Rest. 17 W 660 22nd Street Oakbrook Terrace, IL When: Second Sunday of every month. We will have Guided Rides, Seminars, COY/IOY Selection Process, Bike Show, Light Show, Games, Hospitality, Friday Night Entertainment and the District Challenge. For the District Challenge, Districts will need a team of four people to participate and we would like all Districts to participate. If you do not have four people, we will improvise. Also, it would be helpful if our attendees could bring a hospitality item to supplement what we will provide. BREAKFAST CLUB Are you free on Wednesday mornings? Come and join our Breakfast Club it meets every Wednesday at 9am at the Sunmist Restaurant & Café located at 501 E. Lake Street in Addison. Weather permitting we will schedule an ABR (after breakfast ride.) The theme of the Rally is American Pride. Wear your colors proudly, especially at the Friday Night Entertainment, which is being put on by the Wisconsin District. The more folks who participate, the more fun everybody will experience. We are looking for those who would like to be part of the evening fun, so please contact the Wisconsin District Directors, Frank and Sharon Jackson. Frank s is frankj64155@yahoo.com if you wish to participate in the entertainment. Singing, skits, jokes, stories, any sort of entertainment is welcome as long as we keep it rated G. Please make your room reservations and get ready for an outstanding rally in Williamsburg, Iowa. On another topic, Wing Ding is coming up and Region E is responsible for ticket sales. It would be greatly appreciated if you are attending Wing Ding and could assist Sherry and I at the Ticket Sales Booth. It is only a few hours of your time and there is a signup sheet on the Region E Web Page. Volunteering at Wing Ding always ends up a very fun experience. Volume 21 Issue 6 Page 5 Chapter Educator RIDING IN THE RAIN Do not stay home just because of the rain in the forecast. Just use a little common sense. I will be honest with you, riding in the rain is not my idea of having fun. But there are times that you will have to deal with it. There are the days that are sunny and clear and one hour later you see dark clouds roll in. All motorcyclists should take precautions when riding in any weather conditions I have a few tips that have worked for me and I would like to pass them on. If it starts to rain, look for a safe location to pull over. First thing you will have to do is to put your rain gear on in a safe place away from the road. Wait, yes, I said wait, let it rain for about ten to twenty minutes for the rain to wash away a lot of the oil and grease that is on the road. If you don t, you will regret it. Or you will be singing slip sliding away. Once you start riding, slow down. Driving on surfaces that have been rained on are slicker than usual water acts like a lubricant. This means your brakes are less effective, which means it will take longer to stop on the wet surface. Avoid smooth surfaces. Most obvious is anything metal or painted such as markers in the road. When I say painted it is things such as; lane lines, turn arrows, railroad crossing signs, etc. The metal grates, bridges and rail tracks all will be slippery. They all can cause spin outs or falls. Here is a tip that you can use. Ride behind one of the rear wheels of the car in front of you. This has two benefits, first, if the guy in front of you stops fast you will be able to swerve to a side to avoid it and get a few more feet to stop. The second benefit is, remember that watery sludge that we talked about? The car s wheel in front of you basically acts like a plow by pushing all the water in the ruts out. Which allows you to ride on a dryer pavement. Always keep your face protected. Rain drops hurt at 50 m.p.h. If you ride with an open-faced helmet you will be in the market for something to cover your face. Even if you try a bandanna to cover your face you will feel better. Summary: I am sure there are many more great tips out there. These are just a few. If you have any good ideas please pass them on to your fellow riders so we can all benefit. Enjoy the nice weather and ride safe! Dennis Murphy Chapter Educator

Page 6 June 2017 Chapter IL-Z2 News Ride Coordinator Well I think summer has finally arrive, and the massive amount of rain we ve been getting has seemed to ease and make way to warmer, drier conditions. Long range forecast for Sunday is clear and hot with a high temp of 90, so with that in mind, our after meeting ride will be taking us to a destination for some ice cream. Also this month is our 3 day trip to the Nauvoo Illinois area. We will be leaving on Friday June 23rd from the IHOP on the corner of Route 59 & 75th street in Aurora, address is 583 S Route 59. Kick stands up at 9:00am Only 8 weeks away is our week long adventure ride to Hayward Wisconsin, make sure you get your hotel booked for this one, its coming up quick. Don Shore Z2 Ride Coordinator

Page 8 June 2017 Chapter IL-Z2 News 2017 Annual Fun Run April 1 st - October 31 st It s time once again for the MAP Annual Fun Run. Our theme for this year will be State Parks or Historic Sites and Monuments. I have compiled a list from all the submissions that have been received. While we won t have as many this year as last year, I did try to accommodate everyone who participates. I have also added several bonus sites as not many chapters submitted entries for a bonus site. As in the past, you will need to visit the individual sites and have a picture of you visiting the site. You can also do this as a chapter and include the chapter picture. Your Chapter Director will then need to verify everyone from their respective chapter who did participate. For every five sites that you visit, along with your pictures. You will be able to draw a hand of five cards. If you visit a BONUS site, and send a picture with you in it, you will be allowed to draw an additional bonus card. All hands will be $5 a hand, plus an additional $1 for the bonus draw. Unlike last year, there will be NO restrictions when visiting a bonus site. Payment needs to be from your chapters checking account and made payable to: ILLINOIS DISTRICT MAP. NO CASH or personal checks will be accepted. Multiple pictures can be printed on one sheet. If you want to send in pictures during the contest early, we will be posting pictures on the website. You will need to have all of your pictures, a copy of your checked list, and paperwork for drawn cards sent to us by December 15, 2017. Note: The list for the sites and paperwork for drawn cards are located on the website. After all of the information is received by the cutoff date, each card in the deck will be randomly drawn and assigned a point value. Also, a separate drawing will be done for the bonus sites and those will be assigned a bonus value. The total of these points will be given to the hand and the three highest totals will be the winners. If none of your six cards are a bonus number, you will receive a minimum value for the bonus draw. There will also be an award for the chapter that has the most participants in the contest. Pictures are required to be eligible for the awards. The winners will be announced at Winter Warm Up in 2018. (Bikes do not have to be in the picture) So, let s get riding and have some fun! Volume 21 Issue 6 Page 11 Communications Options for our Chapter We now have several different ways to communicate within our Chapter. It s always a challenge to keep everyone informed and up-to-date as we all have busy schedules, travel, can t always make the meetings, and so on. The Chapter Newsletter remains a staple for our monthly written document. It is typically mailed out several days before our scheduled meeting, and almost immediately is also available for download via our website. Unfortunately, the newsletter needs to be written a week or more before the meeting in order to allow time for production and printing, and so things may change or need to be updated. Hard copy versions of the newsletter are available to anyone who needs one, just let us know. The meeting itself is important way for us to share information not to mention a lot more fun, but again, not everyone can always make the meeting and may still want to engage with us in our rides and other activities. Our website (www.ilz2.com) is probably the central means for everyone to stay abreast of the latest information. Articles from our newsletter are published in the Chapter IL-Z2 News & Articles section. You can search/view these without the need to open the entire newsletter. Further, you can subscribe to these articles by following three easy steps, shown below. Whenever an article is added or modified you will be sent an email notification. You can always unsubscribe. Newsletters are available for download, links to helpful sites, our updated Ride/Event Calendar and more. STEP! Click on menu for Chapter IL-Z2 News and Articles STEP 2 Enter your email address (e.g. myname@gmail.com) Continued on next page

Page 12 STEP 3 Confirm your email June 2017 Chapter ILZ2 News (Continued from previous page) STEP 4 Receive Confirmation in your email Another method is to use Facebook. Many people do not use or like Facebook but we have almost 35 members of the GWRRA IL-Z2 Facebook group. This group is private and if you choose to join, Tony will approve your full participation. You can then see posts and some active communication chats between members, questions being answered and some impromptu rides or other being established. I personally wasn t a big Facebook fan until I saw how valuable this is. For example, at our recent dinner, due to some cancellations, Doug found we had some extra room. He put this on Facebook so any last minute dinner goers or their guests would feel welcome and it worked! Another Facebook option is the new Facebook page (not the same as the group) that was recently created. This is more for publishing information about our Chapter and what is going on so that we might be able to connect with non-members and encourage new participation. This Facebook page is at http://www.facebook.com/ilz2wings, We have posting on different topics and even will post events as reminders for currently scheduled activity. If you should have any questions on how to sign up or use Facebook please just ask, as we have several members who are very good using this application. In all cases, we are trying our best to keep you informed about what is going on in your Chapter. If you should have any questions or concerns, please let us know. Jim Kopchok Chapter Director
