The Borneo rainforest is the oldest rainforest in the world, home to 12 million indigenous and local people as well as with one of the richest biodiversity 15,000 species of flowering plants, 3000 species of trees, 221 species of terrestrial mammals and 420 species of resident birds. At the same time, hectares of rainforest areas are deforested annually for economic development ventures. With environmental scientists raising the red flag on global warming and the irreversible damage if the planetary boundaries pass the tipping points, the debate that arises: How do we strike a balance on the ongoing complex conflicts between economic growth, biodiversity conservation & environmental sustainability of this region? Day 3 Saturday, 06th June 2015 7.00 am Breakfast 7.30am Adventure into Borneo Rainforest Niah Caves, Niah National Park The Niah National Park is renowned as the birthplace of civilization in South East Asia. The oldest human remains in South East Asia, dating 40,000 years was found in its Great Cave. The Niah Caves are also famous for the swiftlet nests what we call as bird nest. In Hong Kong and Singapore, bird nests are often sold at very high prices, at times over US1000 per kilogram! Dinner & Gawai Harvest Festival Celebration GlobCom 2015 convenes during the most celebrated festival in Borneo. Called as Gawai in Sarawak and Kaamantan in Sabah, the Harvest Festival takes place once a year from 31 May onwards. This year, as part of the event climax, GlobCom participants would be experiencing the real thing - at an Indigenous Iban Long House and experience the beautiful hospitality and indigenous tradition & culture of one of our amazing indigenous communities in Borneo.
