Visual Story This visual story is a resource for children and young adults visiting Carousel Theatre for Young People to see Dr. Seuss The Cat in the Hat. This visual story is intended to help prepare you for a new experience and to help you to become familiar with the surroundings and the performance.
Welcome to Carousel Theatre for Young People! We are a theatre for young people and adults. The show is happening at The Waterfront Theatre. The picture above is what the theatre looks like from the outside. The picture to the right is the main entrance of the theatre.
When you enter through the front door, you will see a long space with a counter along one side. This is the Box Office. This is where you can buy tickets or collect tickets that you have already paid for. There may be other adults and children waiting to buy or collect tickets when you arrive. On the left side wall there is a magnet board with words and pictures. The pictures are of all the people who worked on the show. The words are about the schools they went to and the other shows they have worked on.
To the left of the front door, you will see a big space with lots of tables and chairs called the lobby. You may see some adults and children sitting at some of the tables having something to eat. There is a café in the lobby where you can buy drinks and snacks. You can also bring your own drinks and snacks with you to eat in the lobby. If you need to use the toilet, they are located in the lobby. The boys toilet is next to the snack bar, and the girls toilet is near the entrance. This staircase leads to the inside of the theatre. You will use this staircase if you need to leave the theatre during the show or after the show is over. This is not the staircase you will use to enter the theatre.
The picture directly above shows what the theatre looks like inside. When it is time to enter the theatre, the doors will be opened and it will be time to line up. The ushers (shown in the picture on the left) will rip your ticket and give you a piece back that you can keep. They will help you find seats inside the theatre.
During the show, you might feel you need to take a break. If you do, don t worry about it. Find an usher and let them know. They will take you through the door that will lead down the stairs to the lobby where you can relax until you feel ready to come back inside. You can take a break anytime. Before the show begins, you will need to make sure your electronics are turned to silent. You are not allowed to take photos of videos during the show.
When the show starts, it will get darker in the theatre, but the lights on the stage will come back on. In the photos seen here you can see some of the moments in the show. Some of the actors will be the same as in the pictures and some of the actors will be new, friendly faces.
During the show you might think something is funny, and you can laugh if you would like to. During the show you might hear or see something that makes you feel sad, and that s OK. You might hear other people in the audience laugh, cheer, or clap. You can join in if you would like.
At the end of the show, you can clap to let the actors know that you enjoyed the performance. After the performance, the actors will introduce themselves while still wearing their costumes. You can raise your hand and ask them any questions about what you saw. You will also have the opportunity to touch some of the costumes, props, set pieces, and even go on the stage. When you are finished asking questions it will be time to go home. Please gather up your belongings and take them with you. The ushers can help you exit the theatre. See you next time!
