lailata... Three Men and a Mountain Mt. Washington in New Hampshire is the highest peak in the Northeastern United States, with notoriously unpredictable weather up top. At 6288 feet elevation it doesn't seem that formidable, but being in the path of various storm tracks the temperature at the summit can plummet in a few hours. Snow squalls have occurred even during the summer months and it has recorded some of the highest wind speeds on the planet. With an exposed ridge above the tree line, there is constant fear of being blown off course by powerful winds. So a hike to the summit can easily turn deadly if not timed well. And yet it is one of the most visited peaks, thanks to an auto-road and a cog-rail which go all the way to the top. Since my brother had climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro earlier this year and could not join me, I asked a few of my PMM friends about hiking to the summit of Mt. Washington. Eventually Yogesh Date and Harshal Haridas would make the trip with me. We picked late-july/early-august for the hike as it posed the least probability of bad weather. We planned to drive to White Mountains region in New Hampshire and hike the next day, keeping an extra day as rain-date. In paryz 4

lailata... preparation for the big hike, we all did some short hikes in our local area but it didn't fully prepare us for what was to come. We left on a sunny Saturday morning, arriving in Gorham, New Hampshire after 8-9 hours of driving through some scenic roads. We checked into our hotel and decided to pay a quick visit to the trailhead which is near Pinkham Notch Visitor Center. At the visitor center we talked to a ranger about our hiking plans for the next day. The ranger recommended us to climb up by Tuckerman Ravine trail but hike down via Lion Head trail, the reason being that Lion Head trail has more trees to hold on to while coming down. With a steep gradient to hike, it seemed like a good advice at that time. The weather forecast for the next day was cloudy with a chance of afternoon showers, so we had to make an early start. We loaded up on carbs at a local restaurant and made a quick stop to get some supplies for our hike, before heading back to our hotel. We made sure our backpacks were packed before calling it a day. After a snoring fest through the night when we each tried to outdo the others, we woke up at 4:30 AM the next morning and quickly got ready for the hike. It took us a short twenty minutes drive before we reached the trailhead by 6 AM. There was enough sunlight through the cloud cover so we didn't need to carry headlamps, but we did carry rain-gear in case of rain. Soon we were on the Tuckerman Ravine trail which in a short 4.2 miles would take us over 4250 feet of elevation gain. The trail was wide and clearly identifiable. But it was all rocks so it made it tough on our feet. We took a few minutes break at regular intervals as we adjusted to each other s hiking speed. The first couple of miles was a steady climb, crossing streams over wooden bridges, until we reached Hermit Lake shelter in little over an hour. Some hikers were heading down and we asked them about their hike. They had tried to summit during the night but it got so cold that they had to spend the night at the shelter before turning back. They were definitely not dressed adequately which is a common mistake many hikers make when they start off on a sunny day. We took a long pit stop as we contemplated our hike ahead. Up paryz 5

lailata... ahead we could see the sheer walls of Tuckerman Ravine with no clear way to climb. Another hiker pointed us to the route through some trees and we resumed our hike. Hermit Lake is a small alpine lake at the bottom of the ravine where we took some pictures. The trail got steeper and very soon we found ourselves above the tree line. By now we were catching our breath after every few steps due to the steep incline. But this was not the hardest section of the hike as we later found out. It took us a couple of hours to climb up the ravine. Somehow my impression was that once we climb to the ridge line it would be a gentle hike to the top from that point on. But on the ridge we were confronted with a huge field of boulders that we had to climb over. We put away our hiking sticks and at times were on all fours as we scrambled over the boulders. Harshal being the youngest in the group fared better as he pulled ahead and showed the way. After another mile and 1000 feet of elevation gain we made it to the top, in under 4.5 hours. Up at the top there was no great sense of accomplishment as we soon found ourselves amidst a horde of tourists who had either driven or taken the cog train. We spent plenty of time taking pictures as we rested for the return hike. Clouds would roll in at regular intervals and the threat of rain was always there. Fortunately the cloud cover had worked to our advantage, as hiking above the tree line under direct sun would have made the hike more exhausting. Also, we didn't get the dreaded winds that are so common on the ridge. After a couple of hours of enjoying the view it was time to head down. paryz 6

lailata... Hiking down over the boulders was not something we relished but at least this time gravity was working in our favor. We carefully navigated our way down the boulders and reached Lion Head trail junction. The trail continues over more boulders and we couldn't quite see where it went down. With some apprehension we took the trail, not quite sure what to expect ahead. And this is where we lost the plot. In a hurry to get down quickly Yogesh and I tripped and fell a few times. Our legs were not as strong coming down and the unrelenting descent made it hard on our knees. Harshal had gone ahead as he found it easier to keep moving rather than stop after each step. Soon he was out of sight and we started worrying about his safety. Lion Head trail turned out to be much tougher because it was longer and had steep sections of rocks that we had to slide down over. After a grueling five hours, Yogesh and I managed to get down to the trailhead where we met a beaming Harshal who had been waiting for us for a couple of hours. Feeling glad that we had all made it back without any broken bones, we all rejoiced in our successful hike and good fortune. The rain showers never came that day but the next day the heavens poured forth, and we counted our blessings that we got one perfect day of weather for our hike! - Kedar Gidh paryz 7

vaaè\maya... Hariyali Environment Protection Organization With the growth of urbanization in the modern India, there is a steady decline in the tree and forest cover essential for healthy growth of human and animal population. While the Cental and State Governments have been formulating projects for afforestation of barren lands, many times such schemes fail to achieve the desired results on account of various reasons such as corruption, lack of interest in the follow-up, absence of involvement of local people etc. According to a recent newspaper report (Indian Express May 31,2016,news item by Mr Partha Sarathi Biswas), as against the aim of bringing 33 % of the State under Forest cover under its policy formulated in 2008, Government of Maharashtra had only about 16.46% of the state under forest in 2016, despite spending Rs 6881 crores on the project during last 8 years. Unless local people are motivated and involved, such projects are bound to fail to show any sustainable results. With a view to involve voluntary participation of people in the protection of environment, Hariyali, a local social organization was registered in Thane in 1997 by Shri Punam Singavi a Chartered Accountant and a nature lover. He came to stay at Thane and saw the barren hills of Sanjay Gandhi National Park which in fact is a national reserve forest and decided to devote his time for greening barren land and gave up his C.A practice at the age of 54.The founding members of Hariyali were naturally his friends and relatives. As indicated in Hariyali s emblem, its motto is Think Globally, Plan Nationally and Act Locally. Its activities are therefore confined to Thane and its adjacent Mulund (part of Mumbai) area. Major activities are spreading awareness about environment, plantation, post-plantation care, water conservation, soil conservation and solid waste management. All the activities are carried out with the voluntary participation of public such as students, corporate staff, social club paryz 13

vaaè\maya... members and nature lovers. Initial work was converting abandoned stone quarries in Sanjay Gandhi National Park into water storage tanks and lakes with the help of students. Within a couple of years, Hariyali s website was created (hariyalithane.com) giving motto and principles of Hariyali which disclosed that there is no fee for participation. This and the articles on environmental problems in leading local newspapers by Shri Punam Singavi inspired youngsters including working persons to spend some time of their week-ends for Hariyali s activities. The students doing social work were eligible to get some extra marks or concessions. Multinational companies such as Morgan Stanley, Mastek foundation, Tata Consultancy Services participated in its activities as a part of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Some participants later became members of Hariyali, which eventually increased its membership to 600 as on date. Plantation activities are carried out during the monsoon months of June to August followed by year around post plantation activities. The plants needed for afforestation are supplied by Hariyali s own plant nurseries at three different locations at Thane, Mulund and Navi Mumbai, where the activities related to sapling making continue throughout the year. Hariyali also arranges trails and hikes, seed collection drives and on request carries out evaluation studies of forest department projects. The activity of spreading awareness about solid waste management started during 2015 by training municipal gardeners to use wormy--composting boxes for converting garden wastes into manure. With the co-operation of officials of the local Municipal office, the project was successfully implemented and monitored in as many as 16 municipal gardens in Mulund. Visits to the projects were arranged for the willing members of the housing societies in the vicinity and now as many as 25 co-operative housing societies have installed such units in their respective complexes to collect and convert green waste (uncooked vegetable wastes and fruit wastes) into manure, for eventual use in their gardens. The sources of funds are one-time membership fee and donations from corpo- paryz 14

vaaè\maya... rates and individuals. Hariyali does not seek or have Govt funding. The costs of materials are kept to the minimum by using wastes such as empty milk bags, empty water bottles, used carpets, seeds of fruits donated by public or seeds collected through seed collection drives. All the waste materials are donated by individuals or organizations Empty water bottles are filled in and stored in trenches for periodic watering when needed, since construction of tank is not allowed by the public body whose barren land is taken on a lease agreement for greening. Saplings in two plant nurseries in Municipal gardens are watered by municipal gardeners and in the nursery at Navi Mumbai by the paid gardener of the land owner who is a nature lover and member of Hariyali. With such dedicated work, initially a part of Sanjay Gandhi National Park was converted into a dense forest. Later, greening of 2 hills and a tract between two major pipelines was completed. Recently, Hariyali has converted a barren hilly tract of 25 acres into a lush green forest within a period of 7 years stipulated in the agreement. Pictures of the said land are attached for information. - Madhukar Date President, Hariyali madhudate@gmail.com paryz 15

kxivataa... My Reasons for marrying you On the occasion of our Silver Marriage Anniversary, I would like to share a poem that I wrote. This is dedicated to my husband, Kedar Gidh. They say Marriages are made in heaven And then there is an itch after year number seven. But ours is still going strong As we celebrate our Silver Anniversary with a dance and a song! I don t believe you know all the reasons For our being together all of these seasons I imagine you think it s love and passion But let me tell you it s more than mere attraction. I married you so whenever I wanted I could let you win some arguments that we confronted You would have the pleasure to take care Of the cuddly crying baby that I wouldn t dare I married you so you could cook And wash and clean and read me a book And make sure the fridge is always stocked I admired you as you unfailingly rocked! vaaè\maya......operation Padak... The summer Olympics just concluded in Rio. The US was a big winner with 121 total medals of which 46 were gold. Unfortunately, this year was disappointing for India which finished with 2 medals, a bronze and silver. In the 2012 London Olympics India won 6 medals. In an effort to improve India s performance in future Olympics, starting with Tokyo in 2020, a friend of mine has started an initiative called Operation Padak. His name is Asish Law and he lives in Los Angeles, CA. The objective is to help Indian athletes win at least 10 medals by 2020. This will be achieved by collecting donations from Non-Resident Indians and then working with former and current athletes, coaches, and other personalities to provide equipment, training to the Olympic hopefuls. This initiative is still in its infancy. There are a lot of details that need to be worked out. In an effort to start a grass roots campaign 21st century style, we have created a Facebook page called Operation Padak. You will find a lot of information on this page and there is more information to come. I would like to request all of you to become members of this initiative so we can build some momentum. Please spread the word amongst your friends and family and within the community. There is no financial commitment now or later. We just need your emotional support. Like the Shah Rukh Khan s character in Chennai Express says Don t underestimate the power of a common man. If all of us can contribute no matter how, we can meet our objective. - Aniruddha Railkar paryz 18
