KENYA SAFARI & ZANZIBAR June 23 July 3, 2019 The most revered of Africa s safari destinations, Kenya is located in East Africa and is renowned for its abundant wildlife and annual Great Migration. It is a country brimming with romance, thrill and adventure. A Kenyan safari not only boasts spectacular natural beauty in one of the most unspoiled places on earth, but it also brings you up close and personal with Africa s most sought-after wildlife. A safari in Kenya is a step back in time to a world inhabited by characters that are larger than life, from famed explorers and authors to presidents and royalty. With more than a century of nostalgia, paired with modern principles of sustainability and community involvement, your safari will be filled with unforgettable moments and extraordinary adventures. Zanzibar is an island steeped in culture and history a destination that brought adventurers, seafarers and traders from far and wide. The Zanzibar archipelago is set in the Indian Ocean and made up of the larger islands of Pemba and Unguja (also called Zanzibar Island). Zanzibar is also known as the 'Spice Island' due to the delicious variety of spices grown on the island s many plantations. Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a labyrinth of winding alleys, bustling marketplaces, beautifully carved wooden doors, breathtaking mosques and grand Arab residences. Off the northeastern coast of Zanzibar is Mnemba Island - an idyllic private island featuring luxurious accommodation, breathtaking scenery and rich marine diversity. 12-Oct-18 1

MASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE / MARA TRIANGLE Situated in the southwest of Kenya, covering an area of 583 square miles, the Masai Mara National Reserve is a land of breathtaking vistas, abundant wildlife and endless plains. The quintessential Masai Mara safari delivers many attractions, as the reserve is home to an excellent year-round concentration of game, including the more than two million wildebeest, zebras and other antelopes that make up the famous Great Migration. The reserve is a photographer s and naturalist s paradise, with abundant elephant, buffalo, giraffe, lion and cheetah alongside the migratory wildebeest and zebra. Leopards are frequently encountered; endangered black rhino hide in the dense thickets and large rafts of hippo and enormous crocodiles are found in the Mara River. The park is also home to over 450 bird species. NAIROBI Nairobi is the capital and the largest city of Kenya. The name comes from the Masai phrase Enkare Nyrobi, which translates to cool water, a reference to the Nairobi River which flows through the city. The relatively young city was founded in 1899 by the colonial authorities in British East Africa as a rail depot on the Uganda Railway. After independence in 1963, Nairobi became the capital of the Republic of Kenya. Home to thousands of Kenya businesses and over 100 major international companies and organizations, including the United Nations, Nairobi is an established hub for business and culture. STONE TOWN Appreciate the rich culture and unique architecture of Stone Town, ideally located in the old section of Zanzibar City, the main city of the archipelago. Stroll through the city s winding streets full of bazaars and mosques. Discover Stone City in the company of an experienced private guide, who will tailor-make an excursion to suit your personal interests and preferences. Marvel at the variety of cultural influences, with a rich Swahili influence, as you wander along a maze of narrow streets and pathways. 19th century buildings, all built from local coral stone, lend a warm character to the city. Stroll past large verandas with carved banisters and large, engraved doors at the entrances of historic buildings. Browse the busy markets of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, awash with African and Asian inspired trinkets, aromatic herbs, and clothing. HISTORIC SLAVE ROUTE During the slave trade, 15,000 slaves moved through Zanzibar each year, making up a large part of the Indian Ocean slave grounds. Begin the historical and moving tour at Dhow Harbor, a 13th century Swahili settlement. At the height of the slave trade, Dhow Harbor was used as a port where slave ships docked with their captive cargo. Next, head off to the house of the notorious Swahili-Zanzibari slave trader Tippu Tip. This appropriate nickname referenced his abundant wealth and the tip-u-tip rattle of his army s gun arsenal. At the last stretch of the 19th century, Tippu Tip, owned over half a dozen plantations and 10,000 slaves and servants. Visit the yellow Anglican Church built on the site of an old slave market, a square surrounded by small houses. Drive past the missionary graves to Mbweni Ruins, once a school for freed slave girls. Next, head off to Livingstone House and Mangapwani Beach, where hundreds of slaves were kept in caves, awaiting the arrival of the dhows. End the emotional day reflecting on the island s heart-breaking history, encouraging present, and bright future. FREDDIE MERCURY Walk in the footsteps of Zanzibar s most famous son, Freddie Mercury, international rock n roll royalty and lead vocalist and songwriter of the British based rock band Queen. Born Farouk Bulsara in Shangani, Mercury s family had immigrated to Zanzibar from India before his birth. He spent his early years living, playing, and walking through its winding alleyways in the old town of Stone Town. The Mercury family lived here until they fled to Britain in 1964 to escape the Zanzibar Revolution, in which thousands of Arabs and Indians were killed. Take a guided tour through Shangani, where Mercury was raised, visiting the Zanzibar Gallery Shop, once the family s home, and the Zoroastrian Fire Temple where the Parsi family worshipped and where Freddie Mercury was initiated as child. End the musical history tour with a seafront lunch at Mercury s restaurant, a modern-day tribute to the man, his wide vocal range, and his music. 12-Oct-18 2
