JANUARY SOCIAL AT DAVE WILLIAMS

SENIOR CHAPTER DIRECTOR S Corner John-Carl & Diane Zarella Happy New Year, 2017 CHAPTER of the YEAR! As we start out 2019 and our 5 th year as Chapter Directors, I would like to say THANK YOU to everyone in this CHAPTER OF THE YEAR! It has been a pleasure serving you and I only hope you feel we have done a good job. We have a great Chapter Team that really goes all out to make Chapter E the best in Michigan! I would like to invite all of you to come to our Chapter Ride and Activity Planning meetings. These are being held on the 2 nd Monday of the month - January was last Monday (January 14 th ) and we began by laying out all the Ice Cream Rides for the upcoming riding season. I will be filling in the locations on our Chapter E Calendar so you can look through it by visiting the GWRRA Chapter E website. We will be meeting in February (11 th ) and March (11 th ) to plan the longer weekend-type rides, so get your thinking caps on and come up with some new locations! You can contact anyone on the Chapter Team to give them your ideas. I am sure you have heard by now that our former Chapter Gathering location, O'Malley's, is no longer we coming us without a $600 per month reservation - and so we are once again on the hunt for a new spot to call home. We have had some ideas presented so far and are looking into them as possibilities, though none are a definite location as of yet. Please let me know if you know of any other place that would be able to accommodate about 40 of us, possibly has food, and charges nothing for using the room. If not a restaurant, we can do Pot Luck s every month, so don t let that restrict your search. Our Fun Run and Anniversary Party will again be in June at the same location (Brandon Community Park). It will be the second Saturday, June 8 th. Mark your calendars! This year s Michigan Rally is the second weekend of August (8 th -10 th ), and will be held back at Osceola County Fair Grounds in Evart, Michigan. Wing Ding will be held in Nashville, Tennessee the week leading into Labor Day (Aug 27 th - Aug 31 st ). I believe there are several people planning on being there, so come on out! Many fun activities are being planned. Hope you can make it to ALL of the activities the Chapter Team and others plan for your enjoyment. Similar to last year, we will have Ice Cream Rides originate at VC s parking lot on Highland Rd. We will continue to exit at the light near Burger King for safety reasons. This worked well the last couple years and I would like to continue this practice. And, as in the past, weekend and longer rides will leave from Mel s 2 Diner at White Lake and Andersonville Roads. There is one issue at the Mel s Grill location - major construction across the road from Mel s has started - if this becomes a problem, we may need to adjust the location we meet for weekend rides. We will keep you posted. Finally, as I have done the last three years, please make sure to update me on any changes to your address, email, phone numbers or other important contact information. This is very important for us to continue to contact you throughout the year. Your email address may have changed and I will not know unless you tell me. Also, your cell phone information may have changed in which I need to have both your phone number and your cellular provider (Verizon, AT&T, etc.) to properly set you up to receive the text messages that I send out to relay important last minute changes to rides, events, etc. If there are any suggestions you would like to make regarding our methods to contact you, please don t hesitate to talk to me about it. As usual, if there is anything I can do to help you enjoy our Chapter events and rides, please let me know. Now let s have another Great Year!

Assistant Chapter Directors Gayle & Dennis Jisa Gayle s Glimpse MI DISTRICT COUPLE of The YEAR The holidays are over and its time to look ahead for a new riding season!! I know, I know, the weather is not for us YET but.we need to plan for what we what to do and where we want to go this year. The staff is already putting together events and looking for suggestions from all of you. This week we set up all of the ice cream rides but know it is not in stone and we are looking for suggestions of new places to go, or is there some you really didn t like? This is YOUR chapter and we are not mind readers!! You are welcome to join in the planning meetings that are going on the second Monday in February and March. We meet at Wing Lauk on Dixie Highway for dinner around 6:30 and meeting at starts around 7 p.m.. There are the Ohio, Michigan and Indiana winter events coming up and if you hurry you can still get in on the registration for these!! The first one is February 8-9 at the Mohican State Park Resort in Ohio. We have our room and registration in as we are going. We went last year and had a great time!! Its nice to relax and visit with friends we haven t seen for a while, get some new ideas to share with others as well. Then Michigan has a Summer Camp theme on February 15-16,which sounds like a lot of FUN!! Campfire stories and I heard there is a Tug of War challenge put out to two of the sections. The new Safari Books will be available so if you want one and cant attend be sure to let John-Carl know so he can put you on the list to get one. We have had lots of FUN doing these the last two years. We have seen some things we didn t even know existed in our great state!! Its time for the new Michigan Couple of the Year and Individual of the Year to be chosen for 2019. at Wingless Weekend There are seminars and great food as well! Then the Indiana event will be February 22-23 at Shipshewana in Indiana. We went last year and plan to go again this year. They have an Escape Room that was a challenge and lots of FUN and a special dinner at an Amish location off site. Its prepared and served by an Amish family, family style! If you have any questions just ask and we would be happy to answer them. As you most likely know, we lost our meeting place and are on the hunt for a new one. If you have any ideas please let the staff know so we can check into it We would like to find a place that has a separate room for ease of conducting our meeting portion and food that meets with the majorities approval. We would like to keep it centrally located to make it as easy as possible for all of you to attend. We may have to think out of the box and try something totally different.so what can you suggest? We are here to try to make it FUN for everyone!! We cant do it without your input!! A couple of dates coming up that should be on your calendar are: the Maintenance Breakfast has been moved to Sunday May 5 th instead of the last Sunday in April. It will still be held at our house. This is to allow for warmer weather and to still be before the Men s Annual Ride. The other is our Annual Fun Run, which will be Saturday June 8 at the same location. More information on this soon!! THANK YOU for ALL you do! Chapter E was Chapter of the Year and a new one will be announced soon but know we feel we should be Chapter of the Year EVERY YEAR because of the GREAT members we have!! THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts!! YOU ROCK!!! See you gain soon. Gayle & Dennis

Membership Enhancement Program Art & Marla Scafe 2018 CHAPTER E COUPLE OF THE YEAR: Art & Marla Scafe Happy New Year Chapter of the Year. We are planning 2019 rides and events and need your suggestions. You ate welcome to join us at the Ride Meetings the second Monday of January, February and if required, March at Wing Lauk restaurant on Dixie. Chapter E is tried a catered meal this year for the Christmas/Holiday party. We would like your feedback/ideas so we know what the members think we should do in the future. We are homeless again as you probably heard. Things are not working our at O'Malley's so we need suggestions for our Chapter Gathering location. Only 4 requirements for the meeting spot: Room can hold at least 40 Good food and menu Good service Reasonable prices And while we are talking about Chapter meetings, we need to know what we can do to improve our meetings and have good attendance. One of the issues at O'Malley's was our lower attendance the last few meetings. The Chapter can only be as good as the members participation and we need your help with this. Be safe as we finish the winter weeks and have fun as always Art and Marla Scafe MEC and Social Coordinators Chapter E MI GWRRA

Happy New Year! It s a great time of the year to update your safe mileage and high mileage. Please use form N.10 REP levels Data Update Form with the revised date of January 1, 2018 and mail it to us at 1498 Sand Beach Road, Bad Axe, MI 48413. If you are requesting pins/patches/rockers, please mail the price listed on the form to us in the form of a check or money order made payable to GWRRA- Michigan. Please enter the correct membership number on all forms. My RE Info in the database can always be checked even if you ve misplaced your membership card! It s also a really good time of the year to catch up on reading or web browsing. A subject that can provide some great discussions at dinners and gatherings are self-driving vehicles. Self-driving cars have turned out to be another great invention hampered by safety issues. Self-driving technology a decade ago was just an idea; now the promises of transforming the automotive industry and even the motorcycle industry have resulted in many unplanned for consequences. It was thought that robots at the wheel would ensure safer roads for all, including bikers. Robot cars hold the ability to use sensors to see motorcycles and prevent the robot driver from cutting off bikes. Yet as we have already seen in the news, fatalities have occurred with pedestrians so those sensors are not yet proven safety features. The industry believes that motorcycle sales would increase dramatically, because each motorcycle would be surrounded by an electronic safety cage. Wouldn t it be great if our motorcycles could talk to the other vehicles on the road, informing them of our speed, our direction, and our exact location. How to use that information to avoid us is still to be accomplished. BMW Motorrad is working on the technology to see the road ahead of us as motorcyclists and alert us to curves and road and weather conditions. Warnings to slow down and/or switch lanes when possible would keep us safe. Our pleasure in motorcycle riding would be multiplied by our safety. And what about a self-driving motorcycle. Where would we get any pleasure from that? BMW Motorrad has made a video of a self-driving motorcycle public. It s awesome to watch, and looks great on a test track. BMW has been working on the technology for over two years, but there are no plans to actually sell a self-driving motorcycle. Adding automatic safety features such as emergency braking or lane switching or staying is something they are testing in their attempts to make motorcycle riding safer, thus gaining sales of their motorcycles. Just like any technology, freedom of choice is ours. Research and technology are great; what we as individuals choose to do with the information is up to the man/woman in the mirror. Dennis and Felicia MI-DE
