Freedom with Respect The awareness campaign for sustainable mountaineering in South Tyrol Franziska Zemmer Department of Nature and Environment, Alpenverein Südtirol
Human mountain interactions in winter In one season 200-300k tours and 14-20k people (Estimate for South Tyrol from the BRD Mountain Rescue Service, 2011) 2
Wildlife in winter Stay in suitable winter habitats Develop winter coat, fatty layer, mimicry Reduce energy turnover, body temperature and heart beat (e.g. deer) ENERGY SAVING MODE 3
Our leisure space is their habitat 4
What we need is respect: Freedom with Respect We address mountain users. Want them to practice sports in line with the requirements of nature and wildlife. We explain why and what they can do to reduce impact on nature and wildlife. 5
Communication Personal information to our members during courses Trained functionaries as multiplicators at local level Information folders Information tables on site Radio, TV interviews, round tables Print media (newspapers, magazine Berge erleben) Workshops 6
Printed material 7
What can we do? 3 Tips From our folder: The funnel principle 1. Avoid rocky, snow free areas; ride free in open space above the timber line 2.Take the shortest way possible through the timber line, keep your radius short 3.In the forest stay on routes and paths 8
Channelling Map ski routes Map winter habitats Identify conflict zones Select location for information tables Cut trail Winter habitat Conflict zone: Solution = cut out marked route and channel users Winter habitat 9
