We enjoyed Christmas with family, and spent New Years Eve in Pasadena cruising the parade route in the Mack. Actually we only made one pass up Colorado Blvd. and then went over to the Rose Bowl area and saw some of the floats being prepared for the parade. Lisa wanted some Rose Bowl sweatshirts, so we browsed the souvenir shops. We then headed home and spent the evening babysitting our 9 month old granddaughter. It was our first time with her, so it was interesting to say the least. Unfortunately, on December 18 I lost a dear friend of mine, and fellow ATHS member, Warren Hetterly, from Lynden, Wa. Some of you met him at our show in 2014. He also attended the San Diego shows in 2014 and 2015. Warren restored a B model Mack about 30 years ago, which he entered in the very first ATHS National Show held in Seattle. He just recently sold that truck, which was beautiful, and the inspiration for our Mack. I called him constantly for advice. He was more than helpful and sent me numerous parts for the truck, for which he would never take any payment. To put it simply, we lost a hell of a man, and ATHS member. I'm looking forward to our events this year. Just to let you know, the board is open to your ideas for new events or places to see or visit. So please let us know if you have any thoughts for new events. I hope everyone will try and make the National Show in Salem, Oregon this year. The Oregon members are working hard to make it a great show. We are looking forward to it. I hope to see you all at dinner at the Mill Creek Cattle Company. This place has great food and atmosphere. I don't think you'll be disappointed. PAST EVENTS December 6 Long Beach Annual Gunther s Yard In memory of George, his family hosted ATHS-SCC, Long Beach Model T s, the local Harley club, WAPA and other groups for the annual Gunther s Yard open house. The weather was great and it appeared to be the largest gathering in years. Several ATHS-SCC members brought trucks to add to the enjoyment. As usual there were lot of old trucks and classic cars, Harleys and neat old rusty stuff. The hit-n-miss/stationary engines group had many engines running. We look forward to next year. January 31, Pasadena Some of SCCATHS members joined a group of other car clubs for a breakfast meeting at Denny s off Milliken in Ontario. This was followed by a caravan of classic vehicles on the 210 Fwy to Pasadena, and cruising several passes of Colorado Blvd along the Parade Route, followed by lunch at The Old Spaghetti Factory in Rancho Cucamonga. Dennis Martinez took the Mack on the cruise, but Ken was only able to join the group for breakfast. There were about 30 cars and 40 people in the group. Lots of fun. We should plan on doing this every year. 2016 EVENTS February 13 Mentone, CA Annual New Year and Welcome dinner This year we will be having our New Year and Welcome dinner at the Mill Creek Cattle Company in Mentone. They have catered our event at Bill Leuer s, so we can enjoy the evening letting them do the serving and clean up!!! The food is great and we should be able to order off the menu, allowing a greater selection. We plan on having a No Host Happy Hour from 5:00 to 6:00 pm, then Dinner at 6:00 pm until??. They often have a band or other entertainment later, if you want to stay. Most meals are less than $15.00, so the cost should be about the same as when at Bill s. Please RSVP by February 7 so we can let the restaurant know how many tables to set up. Time: ~5:00 to ~6:00 social hour ~6:00 Dinner. Call Ken Lund 909-790-7707 to RSVP and for more information. Directions: Mill Creek Cattle Company - 1874 Mentone Blvd, Mentone 92359. Take I-10 east toward Redlands. Just east of the 210 Fwy, take the Eureka St/Orange St (Hwy 38) exit. Continue on the frontage road ( Pearl ) past Eureka, to Orange. Turn Left (north), under the freeway, onto Orange. Turn right on Lugonia Ave, which will become Mentone Blvd in about 2 miles. Continue past McDonalds (@Wabash) about ¼ mile to restaurant. Parking in rear. Restaurant phone 909-389-0706. Website: millcreekcattlecompany.com. Mark Christensen s Big Adventure (Part II) One of Leigh Knudson s Pennsylvania friends allowed us to park the motor home to stay in his driveway overnight. He showed us his collection of antique restored carousel relics including lions, horses, and music boxes as well as a basement full of beautifully restored T-bird, Mercedes, and Darrin automobiles. He had one truck, a 1941 Dodge Munitions carrier. While we were there, we went to Knoxville, IA to visit the world famous sprint car museum with lots of rare sprint cars displayed. Our next stop was Kearney, NE where we visited a car museum that had a large variety of vehicles including an American Austin all the way to 1968 Road Runner. At the Hershey car show, vehicles were grouped by manufacturer and year because this is a judged show and the competition is fierce! The vehicles were all beautifully restored and some were very rare. We saw cars there that one would never see anywhere else. The car show is held on the last day of Hershey. I said goodbye to Diane who flew back to California and Leigh and I prepared for the trip home. We also visited some antique stores in Nebraska where there was a 1941 Chevy ton and a half for sale. Side of the road fun stuff to look at! The first day of our return trip, we went by a local car museum that had rare early vehicles and car and truck emblems By this time, we decided to fast track it home. Leigh dropped me off in Las Vegas at a friend s house and he headed for home. I continued my journey to Arizona where I met my family and friends for a weekend visit at Lake Mead. Then off we went to our next big stop at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. We visited the Speedway s Race Car Museum which is located in the infield of the race track. There we saw race cars dating back to the very first winning car. This has been the longest, automotive adventure of my life so far! I had a great time and would do it again. Many thanks to Leigh! Our next stop was Indianola, IA right outside of Des Moines where we stopped at a friend of Leigh s that had an early vehicle light and sign collection. He had some really cool displays. 4
