The Mail Boxer August 2014 BMW MOA #7 BMW RA #5 Greetings all! The Prez Says As Tom said on the list, the charity check lost its way to the rally, thank you to everyone who donated money for the cause. We ll have a better system in place next year. I got to the rally a day early for a leadership meeting on Wednesday. A number of different topics for discussion were put out there, Getting new volunteers, new ideas for rallies, what works and what doesn t. Rider education for new riders and experienced riders. As it came to be, the meeting was open to anyone that had any interest in a leadership role. Condolences to Steve Huber, his Father passed away this last month. Farewell to Todd and Betty, as they start their next big adventure. See you at the picnic. Hey, I can wait. The car behind decided they couldn t and appeared to cutoff the merging motorcycle. We all came to a stop at University and Highland Ave. The cut-off car appeared to have a young woman very intently examining her phone (she was in the right-most lane next to me). The motorcycle she cut-off was a Madison motorcycle patrol unit that turned on the lights and attempted to pull the car over. It took some distance and the motorcycle unit s siren before the young woman noticed the unit, but she did eventually pull over. As someone who has been cutoff, run off the road, and almost sideswiped from careless and/or inattentive drivers, I would like that she would be dragged from the car and beaten senseless. I ll settle with her getting a ticket, although I suspect/assume the lesson won t be learned. I m a pessimist at educating car drivers. Page 2

SecretaryÊs Report by Sherry Atkinson No July 2014 Meeting Minutes due to No July Meeting See you August 10th at the Picnic! Secretary Sherry Dear Motorcycle Rider: I would like to announce the publication of my new book titled The Family Camping Guide to Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois & Indiana and ask that you tell other motorcycle riders about this valuable resource for planning touring vacations to any of the four Lake Michigan states. It provides basic information about virtually all 720 state, federal, county, and municipal camping destinations in the four Lake Michigan states rather than naming a few arbitrarily selected favorite campgrounds. With this book, motorcycle riders can find the best campgrounds near their planned travel route and destinations no matter where they may be located. Important features of this book include: Important details such as nearby reference points, phone numbers, and GPS coordinates that allow readers to identify potential campgrounds along planned travel routes and find these campgrounds when traveling in the area. Descriptions of popular activities and tourist attractions near each camping destination. Identification of campgrounds that have been named by other authorities as good camping destinations.procedures for reserving good campsites in popular campgrounds during busy summer weekends. Over a hundred photos of popular camping destinations in the four states. The book was published by Trails Books in June 2014 and is listed for $19.95. To purchase a copy, visit www.amazon.com and enter the title of the book or my name. Also, visit my personal website www. BasicTentCamping.com and contact me if you have any questions. Thank you for helping me spread the word about this valuable resource. Frazier M. Douglass IV fmd4camper@gmail.com This Month s Photo Submit your caption on the club s Facebook page. Page 3

How was that National Rally?!! by Heidi Goehring What an exciting rally! If you weren t in St. Paul for the 42nd National BMW MOA rally, here s a little of what you missed. No Pic, but Linda Low performed nothing short of a miracle at the sewing booth. Ask to see Brian s jacket after a muffler burn. «A Mayfly hatch along the Mississippi thick enough to be picked up on radar. Early arrivals may have had some slick roads. Some confusion as to the rally» location. Where is everyone? (Actually, Bruce and Angie took advantage of the wonderful GR3 campground in Soldiers Grove on their way up to the rally.) «Award for Best Rally Toes went to Joann. As per Alan, Joann footed the bill for her Beemer mani- and pedicure. Having toed the line she should win hands down. I think she really nailed it. Upon arriving home, Alan added, We are back in Madison and Joann s Beemer Nail Polish is still intact. That woman can really hold her lacquer. No Pic, but Judi won a grand prize: Edelweiss Tour!!!! I m certain Alan intended no puns. He s usually not a punny kind of guy. Stealing the spotlight for creating excitement, friend of the Madison Club» and often guest, Lori demonstrated what NOT to do. She put a real dent in the competition with a twist of the wrist. (Wait, I don t think that loader was competing!) She still placed 3rd in the GS Giant competition. Page 4

Advanced STREET skills with MOTOVID @ Blackhawk Farms Submitted by Jason M. Herheim I just got the green light to roll out a new program with MOTOVID. This happens within a track day, but this particular thing is NOT a track day, and NOT our Sportrider101 clinic. I ve been offered the opportunity to host an Advanced Street Skills seminar. How is it different than the other stuff we offer? I m targeting street riding groups. BMW club, Women in the Wind, Stillettos on Steel, Hog Chapters, Wi Riders, and, even ABATE. Group will be Capped at 20 people and cost will be less than $225 1 I m imposing a track speed limit of 70 mph. 2 We re going to treat the track as if it were a road, We ll be focus on riding from the inside to center of the track (as if we re staying in our lane) on the street. 3 We re relaxing gear requirements to MSF standard Plus, Full face DOT helmet, and Riding Jacket. (I realize I m marketing to a group of riders who generally gear up more than I do. ) 4 All 2 wheel motorcycles than can achieve 55 mph are included. I d take somebody on a Bergman. 5 Last track session you will be able to go 2 up, Though we will bring the drill back down to the first session, the goal will be to help you see how a passenger changes a bike. 6 Gotta have a motorcycle license. 7 Bike requirements, good tires (not new, but newer is better) Good brakes, no leaks. We ll tape all the lights and lenses at the track. This class is designed to meet the gap for people who know how to ride but may want to increase there skills while only being expected to go Highway speed. What will you get - 5 structured classroom and on track sessions with a field trip to spectate some of our Advanced riders and talk about how what they do applies to the street. This class will run rain or shine, and most likely be even more beneficial in the rain. DATE: SATURDAY AUGUST 30TH. @ Blackhawk Farms Raceway. S.Beloit, IL. Sign up by e-mailing me directly: Jasonherheim@gmail.com Did you have fun at GR3? How about the National? If you like BMW get-togethers in scenic areas, then perhaps we ought to think about supporting the BMW Motorrad Northern Illinois by attending the 18th Annual Galena Campout! August 22 24, 2014 It s only about 90 miles SW from Madison, in the Driftless Region near the Mighty Mississippi! Family friendly Palace Campgrounds offers plenty of shaded camping, mini cottages, RV hook up, hot showers, and even a pool and sun deck. More info at http://bmwmoa. org/calendar/artmid/3209/articleid/520/18th- Annual-Campout.aspx or in your copy of MOA ON. And approximately 32 miles S of Galena is Savanna IL, home of the Iron Horse Museum & HD hangout Poopies. Imagine a BMW invasion at Poopies. As you take off your helmet and safety gear, they walk around you and your bike like you just landed from Mars. Food is great and they usually have bands on weekends. Folks headed there welcoming company include Angie & Bruce Bowman and Heidi Goehring & Brian Manke. Join us! Let s check out our neighbors south of the border. BUT... if that doesn t sound like your thing, remember the 44th Annual Dells Rally is coming September 5 7, 2014. Let s show the Wisconsin Club how much we appreciate their support of GR3 by turning out in numbers. Let s get the most club members there!!! Pre-reg by Aug. 23 for $10 savings. More info at wiscbmwclub.com And if your not gonna be there, feel free to contact Ambassador Randy Boris and volunteer for the Ironman. He s always looking for a few good riders that weekend. Page 5
