President s Message This week it is 'Greetings from Downtown Brisbane'. Toowong in actual fact. From a hotel at the bottom of the hill that our son, Connal, lives on. We have just enjoyed a wonderful weekend with family for our nephew's wedding. Beautiful bride, handsome groom, exceptionally well organised occasion and an amazing setting on a private property in the area called Doon Doon, NSW. Mt Warning in the distance and lots of forest and National Parks, albeit very dry. Paul Bowman has agreed to be President 'stand-in' this week as Maree will be having tests during the day and may not be able to come to Rotary. Thank you in advance Paul. Paul has also been very busy organising a meeting with Lions and Apex to explore the feasibility of a Zigzag Park which has been suggested by Graeme Davis. We met as a small group last Tuesday evening and both service Clubs are positive about working together to look at what would be required, the associated costs and logistics. Further information will be advised as it becomes available. Also last week, nine of us were able to attend the Group 4,5,6 Forum with 130 odd other Rotarians to hear a range of really good young speakers who covered topics from Windward Bound, to Camps Tasmania and Rotaract. The feature speaker for the evening was Matthew Verney discussing 'Family Violence' from the legal perspective. A subject that is not often talked about openly. Some facts about the frequency of family violence were extremely hard to stomach as it appears that way too frequently women and children, in the first instance, are affected by violence within the home. Being abused, hearing abuse and seeing abuse is a high statistic that must be addressed as a society. Every one of us needs to be observant and proactive. A 'get well' to Marc Smith also - hope you are back to your usual chipper self and able to come to Rotary. It is unfortunate that Michael and I are not there to hear this week's speaker from VDL as we were particularly looking forward to hearing all about the company and the latest ventures. Finally, a reminder about the visit from our District Governor Tony Colman next week. The meeting will be held at the Pavilion and is a partners night so please make sure you RSVP for the meeting with extra numbers. Let's make it an especially welcoming evening to make Tony and Liz's memory of Deloraine Rotary even better. A reminder to the Board members to also be there half an hour earlier to meet with the DG. Yours in Rotary Gayle

INNER WHEEL September Information The September Inner Wheel meting will be held Wednesday 27 th September, at the British Hotel - 6.00 for 6.30p.m. Rotarians and partners are invited to attend Inner Wheel meetings, please advise Robin Dixon. A reminder that Members are automatically booked in for Meetings, and should advise Robin Dixon of any apologies 0427 622 161. Group Forum It was a well attended night with interesting speaker contributions with the main topic being family violence. Many important issues and surprising statics were presented and made one think what is going on in our society! Questionnaire This Questionnaire/Survey was distributed via email (or hard copy) a few weeks ago. If Rotarians could please look at this and fill it in ASAP, this would greatly assist the Board with their planning. If you did not received a copy, then please ask for one. Completed copies can be given to either President Gayle or Secretary Michael.) Photos of the Deloraine Club table. We had 2 guests plus 9 locals at the table. Thank you to PP Steen and Rtn Stephanie for supply of photographs and blurb An old man was sitting on a park bench, looking very sad. I asked him: "What's the matter?" He said I have everything a man of my age could wish for, a lovely new bride in her 20's, new car, lovely home and good health. "Then why are you sad I asked?" He replied: "I can't remember where I live!"

Meeting of 26 th September Meeting will be held at Bush Inn Hotel, 6.15 for 6.30p.m. Guest Speaker at this meeting will be Evan Roley CEO of Moon Lake Moon Lake Investments Pty Ltd trading as VDL Farms formerly known as The Van Diemen s Land Company (VDL) has been committed to quality land, dairy, and stock management practices for over 180 years. Established in 1825, we are located in the picturesque northwest of Tasmania, and are one of Australia's oldest companies. Today VDL Farms own and operate 25 dairy farms, a Dairy Support Unit and a standalone Heifer Rearing Operation. Including replacements VDL currently runs approximately 30,000 dairy stock. Rotarians are encouraged to invite guests to this meeting. In particular this may be an ideal meeting to invite (young) farmers along. But remember that if you are inviting others to attend, you must advise PP Ann of numbers by midday on the Tuesday. Next Weeks s Meeting Tuesday 3 rd October DGs Visit The DG Tony and Liz Colman will be visiting our club on 3 rd October and this meeting will be held at the Rotary Function Centre. All Rotarians will be marked as attending and being accompanied by their partners, unless you advise PP Ann otherwise and this must be done by Friday 29 th September at the latest. The meal cost will be the usual $26 and you will need to BYO drinks. News from PDG John & PP Lesley Just visited the nature pools at Myvatn, Iceland. Temperature outside pool 8 o Temperature in pool 40 o. This pool is surrounded by the lava fields. The lifeguard wore a snow suit. It was great in the water but the dash to the change rooms was breath taking!!

Meander Valley Festival of Creative Ageing Tasmania s only creative ageing festival will again be held in the Meander Valley in October. Commencing on Monday 16 th Grenoch Galley Memories Exhibition, Wine and Cheese evening (6.00p.m.). The Meander Valley Festival of Creative Ageing aims to combat isolation and loneliness for older adults living in the community. Festival director and registered music therapist Alexandra Morse said Meander Valley was looking forward to hosting the event. There is now substantial evidence to show that engagement in arts activities such as dancing, singing, fine arts and literature has a powerful impact on enhancing quality of life, she said. *Activities+ improve mobility and motor control, greater self-esteem, high social engagement, improved mental well-being and a decrease on reliance on medication and supported personal care. More than 25 events, including sessions, workshops and exhibitions will be held during the festival. The festival welcomes a host of guest creative arts practitioners, including ceramic artist Gill Riches, botanical artist Deborah Wace, composer Jimmy Reece and art therapist Megan Booth. Mountain Stories will open the event with the Preservation Society to share history about the folklore of the highland district. Musical concerts, story time, puppet shows and delicious food events will all follow. Organisers say a free concert in the Marakoopa Caves will be a highlight. The festival has been a collaboration project between the district s community members, service providers and various stakeholders. Deloraine House, Deloraine Trade Training Centre, Deloraine LINC, Meander Valley Life and Deloraine and Districts Community Bank have all supported this year s festival. Meander Valley Life board member Christine Chillcot was happy about the festival s success. We recognise the significant positive effects creative arts can have on our residents at Kanangra and Grenoch and the connection the arts have in building a community of support for all elders living in the Meander Valley community, she said. The festival runs until Sunday 22 nd October. More details of events are available from Aged Care, Deloraine office.
