Gold Country German American Club P. O. Box 571, Grass Valley, CA 95945 Promoting German Culture and Stronger German-American Ties in Northern California www.goldcountrygermanamericanclub.org Alpine Chalet Float in the Nevada City Parade July 4 th The more the merrier! We have several club members participating in the parade already but can always use more. If you would like to be involved please be at the Rood Center (government center) at 9 AM on the 4 th of July. We will be decorating the chalet and then moving it into position to start marching, dancing, flag waving and generally having a great time. Grab those dirndls and lederhosen and join the parade!! Here's a photo of last year's entry. We got accolades of praise. The theme of the parade this year is "Independence Day the Nevada County Way". Let's see what we can make out of that. Thanks to Dennis Naumann, Al Feser, David Moss, and Paul Trethewey for the work done on the float to make it parade worthy. Our Alpine Chalet Float is something that parade goers have come to expect every year. PAGE 1

PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Hi everyone! At press time, Bob is in Alaska, fishing for salmon! If he were here, he would probably write something like this: It is my privilege to serve in this capacity, and to be leading such a talented and devoted team of people. Thank you all for your support! The summer picnic was a smashing success, the weather was perfect, the food was scrumptious, and the games were a riot! If you didn't come, you missed out. I encourage you to participate in the club's entry to the Fourth of July Parade. For us, this is a big event that puts the club in the public eye. -- Paul Trethewey, newsletter editor Be sure to check out the official club web page! It has all kinds of interesting stuff, including photo galleries, links, and prior newsletters. It s located at: www.goldcountrygermanamericanclub.org German Language Classes Interested in learning German? There is only one (as indicated by Frau Genau Zeigefinger at left) place in Nevada County to take classes, and that is RIGHT HERE at the Gold Country German-American Club! Classes are FREE with club membership. The Beginning level class is under the direction of Rebecca Claus; Intermediate level is taught by new member Erica Meier. These two classes assemble at various class members' homes. Because of the holiday, we meet on the second and fourth Monday evenings of July. For Christa Benson leads the advanced German speakers and she writes: The German Conversational Class will meet at Christel Hermansen's at 154-B Sutton Way, Grass Valley, Tuesday, July 5 from 4 to 6 p.m. PLEASE call 530-274-2715 or email her at christelmermansen@comcast.net to say if you are coming or not. Theme: Hobbies. Anyone interested in speaking German please call Christa at 530-272-6095 Es Grüßt, Christa PAGE 2

GOLD COUNTRY GERMAN-AMERICAN CLUB NEWSLETTER JULY, 2016 Think about this on July 4, Independence Day: During the American Revolutionary War, George Washington called upon the services of Baron von Steuben of Prussia (Germany) to convert the rag-tag Continental Army into a disciplined military force. Had it not been for von Steuben, it is likely that the American Revolution would have failed, and Washington, the Father of Our Country, convicted as a treasonous traitor to the British crown and dealt with accordingly. Here: http://primopezzo.com/tried-true-classic-rhubarb-pierecipe-from-fannie-farmers-1896-cookbook/ This recipe was used for a blue ribbon-winning pie entry in the 1989 Nevada County Fair, so you know it's good!
