The Gold Rush Circle Tour to Likely Likely is a small rural community of 350 people in the Cariboo Region, nestled in the foothills of the Cariboo ains. Likely is situated at the mouth of 100 km long Quesnel. The lake lays claim to being the deepest fjord lake in the world and the surrounding area is a part of the only inland temperate rainforest in the world, giving it a unique climate. Between 1896 and 1898, the river was dammed to allow mining of the Quesnel River bottom. As a result, the town that sprang up was known as Quesnelle Dam. When the post office was moved from Quesnel Forks in 1923, it was felt that a name change was due to better suit the town s new status. The town was renamed for John Plato Likely, a popular miner at the time. Facilities include a: school, community hall, museum and visitor centre, chapel, library, and post office. Mining Today As it was in the 1800s, mining continues as a major driver of the Cariboo regional economy. Imperial Metals Polley Mine is the main mining industry in the Likely area. Taseko s Gibraltar Copper Mine near McLeese supports the regional economies of both Williams and Quesnel. Here is an interesting statistic on the Gibraltar Copper Mine: In 2017 Gibraltar spent more than $281 million on supplier goods and services. Approximately 35 per cent of these expenditures (nearly $100 million) was purchased from suppliers and contractors in the B.C. Interior and Cariboo regions. Barkerville Gold Mine is the major employer in the community of Wells. Other mines are in various stages of exploration, permitting and development throughout the entire Cariboo region.
