The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Fort Collins Lodge #804 Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love and Fidelity THE ECHO Volume 51 Issue 8 August 2015 Brothers and Sisters- It s hard to believe it is already mid-july and I am witting my article for the August issue of the Echo. With a combined Echo for June/July and only one Lodge meeting in early June followed by one in late July, much of the summer has passed since I have had an opportunity to address the entire membership. We have had some wonderful events at the lodge this past June. The Dinner Gala on June 11th was a true success and a wonderful dinner! Flag Day on June 14th was, as always, an expression of our love and support of our Country and of our Flag. What a surprise to be introduced to the Great, Great, Great Grandson of General John Pershing, one of the Boy Scouts who posted the Flags of our Country during the ceremony! Thanks to all of you who attended this patriotic event. On June 27th we celebrated in Hawaiian fashion in our backyard with a Luau, another well attended event and once again another great meal. Thanks to everyone on the committees and members of the staff who help plan and put on these wonderful events. And a special thanks to all of our members who support our Lodge by attending and volunteering at our many functions throughout the year. Be sure to watch the bulletin boards and read the Echo to keep informed of the many events still planned for this year. July 5th through 9th was the 151st Grand Lodge Session of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks in Indianapolis, Indiana. I found Grand Lodge to be a wonderful and informative event and I was truly proud to be there as representative of each member of Fort Collins Lodge #804. I felt lucky to have nice conversations with both, the outgoing Grand Exalted Ruler, John Amen, and our new Grand Exalted Ruler, Ronald Hicks. We were all proud to have John, a Colorado Elk, serve as GER and I am sure the Virginia Elks are equally as proud of Mr. Hicks. I am sure he will be a great Ambassador of our Order as he travels the country this coming year. Tammy and I thoroughly enjoyed exploring the sights, sounds and tastes of Indianapolis, much in part because of the company of Joyce and Tony Bonanno, Larry and Barb King and Bill and Jean Rogers. Thanks for accompanying Tammy and I and adding to our wonderful experience! I will be making a formal report of the events of the Grand Lodge Session and the ballot results of the 18 resolutions voted on at our Lodge meeting on September 15th. The Colorado State Elks Convention will be held at the Denver Marriott South September 3rd thru 5th. I would encourage all of our Officers and any other members who would like to learn more about the great Order of Elks to attend and to sit in on some of the informative break-out sessions. If you are interested in attending, it is an easy daytrip. However, if you would plan on staying overnight in Denver, Joyce needs to submit all registration fees and lodging requests along with payment, by July 29th. Enjoy the rest of your summer, keep safe and I hope to see each of you at the lodge! Fraternally Mike Sutton Exalted Ruler Fort Collins Lodge #804

The Legacy brick display is a visible remembrance of those Elks who preceded us in service to the Order and a link to current members continuing to fulfill their obligation. The Legacy display will also serve to invite new members to join us in the honorable work we do in serving our community. The current cost for inclusion of a named member is $100.00 per brick with all donations designated for Lodge 804 general expenses. Contact Joyce Bonanno at the lodge to order a brick. Who would have thought that selling beer at CSU home games is not only financially rewarding but fun? Last season, Elk volunteers brought in over $4000 dollars, benefitting the Lodge and charities we support. Our booth is a popular one, and we do a very brisk business serving enthusiastic Ram football fans. It takes four to six people to efficiently pour, serve, and support the operation. Although we had adequate help last year, we are hoping to increase the number of volunteers this season to allow our helpers a break between games. There is a sign up sheet near the bar with the scheduled games and number of volunteers needed for each. If you would like to have a good time while contributing to our charitable work, sign up for a game or two. See Larry King or Mike Sutton for more details. We have less than two months before the start of the season. We need to get the schedule organized soon. GO RAMS! Fraternally yours, Larry King Leading Knight

Page 6 August Issue 2015 Secretary s Notes Echo August 2015 I hope all of you are having a good summer, it is going fast. We have one Lodge Meeting in August which is on August 4th. In September we will return to our regular meeting schedule with meetings on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday s of the month. Be sure and attend Lodge Meetings, they are an excellent opportunity to get to know your Brother and Sister Elks and stay informed on the business of the Lodge. Remember, membership is the life blood of our organization. Ask your friends, family members and co-workers to visit the Lodge on a Friday night to attend dinner and play bingo. Let them know about all of the charitable work we do in the community and invite them to become a member of our wonderful organization. Our Lodge donations to the Elks National Foundation are currently $7.018 per capita out of 55 Lodges in Colorado we are number 6!! All of our members should be proud of this accomplishment. In the interest of safety, please do not back down the East side drive way. This drive way is a one way with the exit to the north parking area onto Link Lane. Please be careful when you are turning off of Mulberry onto the frontage Road. There have been several accidents at this intersection in the past few months. Remember, you can also turn off of Link Lane and enter the back parking lot of the Lodge property. I want to thank Bill and Jean Rogers for all of the work they have done this summer to keep our lawn area looking nice and thanks to Jean for providing pictures for the Echo. Thanks to Jim Chance for filling in for Bill while Bill was attending Grand Lodge. Thanks to Tony Bonanno for continuing to do our re-cycling. Thanks to Charlie Thomas, Bob Matney and Al Dillman for running the Queen of Hearts on Friday nights. All of the members who have helped with the bingo, volunteering on Friday nights to help our wait staff, working our events and supporting the Lodge on Friday nights - we could not do it without you! Hugh Shepherd and Gayle Watkinson put on an impressive Flag Day Ceremony again this year. 7986 The Colorado State Elks Association recently donated $2,000.00 to our Lodge as an additional donation for the DeCapio Family who lost their home in the 2013 flood. We will be presenting this check later in August. Thanks to incoming Colorado State Elks President Rich Stolte for spear heading this effort. Mike Sutton, Larry King and I recently presented $2,100.00 in Gift Cards to Crossroads Safe House. This donation was made possible by a grant from the Elks National Foundation and a $100.00 donation from Walmart. Michael Douglas did not see his membership number in the Summer Edition of the Echo and lost out on $10.00 toward food or drinks at the Club. Be sure and support the businesses of our members who advertise in the Echo. Fraternally, Joyce Bonanno Secretary Lodge 804 Grand Lodge 2015 Donating Gift Cards to Crossroads Safe House
