Troop 69 recently held its quarterly Court of Honor. There were over 30 merit badges and about 10 rank advancements awarded. The SPL (Brandon Stone) and ASPL (Nick Johs) did a very nice job running the meeting and awards. Mr Metge gave a recap slide show which is currently available on the website. Pictures from summer camp were available ($5) - contact Mr Stone if you want a copy. He probably still has some. Philmont was discussed and money is currently due (~$275) for those scouts who are going to be 14 years old. Page 2 Scout Tips Knife Tips Do: Keep the blades closed except when you are using them. Cut away from yourself Keep your knife sharp and clean. A sharp blade is easier to control than a dull one; a clean blade will last longer. Close the blades before you pass a knife to someone else. Don't: Carry a knife with the blade open. Arapahoe Rendezvous This year s Arapahoe Rendezvous will be Oct 10-12 at Ben Delatour Scout Ranch and will be at Camp Ruth Coffin. Activities will include a cooking contest and Civil War Reenactment (??). There will also be the usual cast of activities such as rock climbing, hatchet throwing, and shooting sports. This is the place where Troop 69 took first place and served about 40 folks for lunch! Here is a picture from last year. The scoutmaster is searching feverishly for his tiara! Two reasons for the Scout Merit Badge Plan are 1) to give you more skill in the things you like to do; 2) to give you a chance to try out new activities, so that you can find new things which ;you really like. -Baden-Powell KNOTS!! Troop pays for scout activities When we ll leave: 5pm from Hut on Friday Oct 10th Purpose of Boy Scouts The purpose of the Boy Scouts of America, incorporated on February 8, 1910, and chartered by Congress in 1916, is to provide an educational program for boys and young adults to build character, to train in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and to develop personal fitness. 3rd Flatiron Climb Popcorn Fundraiser Scouts from the troop climbed the 3rd Flatiron overthe last weekend. Led ably by Curt Lehman and Ralph Tavino, the 13+ year old scouts used semi technical climbing techniques to achieve this feat. It has been called the finest beginner climb in the US. Troop 69 is selling popcorn by Trails End Company. Dates will be from ~Sept 28 to Oct 29. In contrast to the Gold C books, the scouts are get to keep their share of their sales which amounts to about 35% of total sales. This goes into a scout account and which the boys can use for scout activities (camp, gear, etc). Mrs Haas has further details. Go Big Sellers!! Philmont Adventures 2004 Troop 69 has managed to secure two crews for the summer of 2004. Age requirements: be 14 by Jan 1 of year attending OR complete 8th grade and be 13 during year of participation. Currently, there are 9 scouts and 7 adults that have expressed interest in going on the trek. Dates: July 15th 27th, 2004 Cost: $475 per participant. Note that we may go down a day early and spend a nite in a hotel near Philmont. (cost for hotel ~ $25/ person). Payment Breakdown: $50/person due Aug 15th, 2003, $212.50/person due Oct 15th; balance due April 15th, 2004. Page 4 Merit Badge Classes Update The scouts will have opportunities to spend some of their time on Monday nights learning and earning merit badges. What merit badges do you want to earn? We will be reviewing what merit badges troop scouts think would be best to start working on for the next few months. One idea from a parent was to have a binder with merit badges in progress for each scout. If all the adults were signed up for each required merit badge, then the requirements would get signed off a bit quicker. What do you think?. It is the oldest troop in Louisville and has been around since the LATE 1950 s.
