Antarctica Emperors & South Pole 7 th to 15 th January 2019 (9 days) Emperor Penguin adults & chicks by Dave Semler Our Emperors South Pole tour takes you deep into the last frontier. Vast and inhospitable to humans, Antarctica it is both brutal and delicate. The world s largest desert, it holds almost three quarters of the world s fresh water. Historically, Antarctica probably supported the largest concentration of wildlife known on earth, virtually wiped out by sealers, whalers and fishermen in a matter of decades in the early 19 th century. A tour to Antarctica, and more specifically the South Pole is no mean feat even today, though certainly more comfortable and attainable that it was over 100 years ago when Roald Amundsen, Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton vied to be the first to reach it. Experience of a lifetime is an often over-used and under-defined phrase, but we believe this short tour will surpass even your greatest expectation of just what it does mean. We depart the Mother City of Cape Town on-board an opulent Gulfstream private jet, touching down on the Antarctic massive in a

RBL Emperors & South Pole Itinerary 2 little over 5 hours. Based at a private camp, we explore our immediate surrounds as well as making a visit to an immense Emperor Penguin colony. A visit to the South Pole will put you in exalted company, as one of the very few humans to have ever stood here. RBL Emperors & South Pole Itinerary 3 The Mother City, Cape Town, South Africa THE TOUR IN DETAIL Day 0: Pre-tour arrival in Cape Town. Please arrive in Cape Town, South Africa two days prior to your scheduled departure date for Antarctica. On the day before our departure, we will host a compulsory safety briefing. Our staff will be there to welcome you and update you as to the latest weather forecast in Antarctica as this will determine the exact timing of your flight. During this briefing. We will also check that you have all the correct Antarctic clothing and ensure that nothing has been inadvertently forgotten. Day 1: Fly from Cape Town to Antarctica. We travel in uncompromised comfort across the mighty Southern Ocean in a Gulfstream private jet. During the 5.5hr flight, the African night turns to day as we soar over thousands of icebergs and cross into the polar circle into 24hrs continuous daylight. We land on a specialist ice runway, before jumping aboard specially-adapted 4x4 vans for the 8km (5mi) shuttle to our main camp, where a hot meal awaits you. Our friendly staff will provide a welcome briefing and show you to your sleeping accommodation. Day 2: Acclimatize to Antarctica. Today is essentially set aside as an easy day with which to acclimatize to Antarctic conditions. Having settled into our private Whichaway Camp, you will have the opportunity to do as much or as little as you like each day. Activities range from gentle treks to the incredible ice waves, kite skiing, ice climbing and even abseiling! The Whichaway Camp is unique, and the perfect base from which to start your adventure. There are six state-of-the-art sleeping pods that are heated and designed for two people in each. At just over 6m (20ft) in diameter, they are also spacious, Departing our private jet on a specialised ice runway

RBL Emperors & South Pole Itinerary 4 with a writing desk, wash area and toilet. For guests travelling separately, the room can be partitioned for privacy. The rest of the camp comprises a shower pod, kitchen and three centralised pods that make up the reception, lounge and dining room. While the exterior is made from cutting edge materials, the interior has an oldworld feel with rich textures. Here you can relax, enjoy the fantastic food from our award-winning chef and take things easy. The dining table accommodates 14 people, a space for sharing adventures and enjoying great food. Busy days exploring Antarctica are sure to work up an appetite Emperor Penguin colony numbering over 6000 individuals that will be satisfied by meals served from our award-winning chefs. Hearty breakfasts, elegant lunches and three course dinners ensure a well-fed experience at the bottom of the world. Day 3: Living with the Emperors. After a leisurely breakfast this morning, we board a DC3 Basler Turbo prop plane and fly 2hrs across Antarctica, providing immense views of the high polar plateau, before landing at the Emperor Penguin colony. You will be the only people to witness this incredible wildlife spectacle and be able to get up close and personal to these real life stars of March of the Penguins. There are over 3000 breeding pairs and their newly hatched chicks. We are the only tourists to visit this colony, and as a consequence the chicks are entirely unafraid and often waddle right up to you. it is one of the greatest thrills on earth to witness such a rare and secluded wildlife spectacle. As the tallest and heaviest of all extant penguin species, the Emperor Penguin is endemic to remote areas of Antarctica. While Emperor s are not tough to find, reaching their range is the rather tricky part. Now Scenic splendour of Antarctica

RBL Emperors & South Pole Itinerary 5 that we are here, we have plenty of time to enjoy this incredibly adapted species. Males famously have to endure the weather extremes of the relentless Antarctic winter, which may encompass winds of 200km/h (120mph) and temperatures of -40 degrees Centigrade in order to incubate their eggs. During the Whichaway Camp incubation period that last approximately 115 days, males will lose more than 50% of their body weight, shedding up to 20kg (44lbs) in the process! Day 4: Exploration of ice tunnels and the scientific base. Today we have ample time to explore the ice waves beneath our camp, delving into the series of ice tunnels that are as surreal as they are beautiful. The day ends with a visit to the nearby science base to learn more about their work, followed by a sauna. Day 5: The South Pole. Today is surely the pinnacle event of the tour. It is a total of 2,400km from Whichaway Camp to the South Pole. The first part of the journey is a 5hr flight to a refuelling stop at FD83. We will have a chance to walk around the high polar plateau for an hour or so before continuing onwards to the South Pole The flight ascends rapidly to an altitude of approximately 3 000m and remains at that level for the majority of the journey. There is a true sense of remoteness at this point. For as far as the eye can see, the white horizon meets the pure blue sky. The South Pole - the most southerly point on earth and the holy grail of early explorers. At the designated marker there is no more east, south or west on the planet, only north meaning you are able to walk around the world in just a few paces! Today we shall all join a select group of people who have journeyed this far south. We then have the chance to enter the Amundsen-Scott American Science Station to learn about their often ground- Opulent accommodation and dining

RBL Emperors & South Pole Itinerary 6 Ceremonial South Pole breaking research before going to their unique south pole shop where one can buy souvenirs and even send postcards! After our absorbing time at the South Pole, we fly back to FD83 where we spend the night in specialist tents. You will be very comfortable and well looked after as we experience camping in one of the wildest places on earth. *South Pole temperatures range from -35 to -25 C (-31 to -13 F), and even the slightest breeze can quickly freeze exposed skin. The apparent altitude of 4,000m at the South Pole is likely to make some of us feel short of breath and also develop a mild headache. It is imperative that we move slowly and comfortably. Day 6: Return to base from the South Pole. After a night spent camping, you will be given a hearty breakfast before boarding the plane once again for the flight back to our camp. The flight is the perfect chance to really appreciate the immense scale of Antarctica, before you return to our camp for a threecourse dinner and champagne to celebrate your achievement. Day 7: Abseiling Nunatak Mountain, Kite Skiing and historical lectures. This is an easier day with talks from our polar explorer staff about some of the lesser known history of Antarctica and their world record breaking expeditions. The balance of the day is open to allow you time to enjoy kite skiing around camp, or a giant abseil off the nearby Nunatak mountain. For a full selection of available activities, please Top of the World from Nunatak

RBL Emperors & South Pole Itinerary 7 check the activities gallery. Day 8: Return to Cape Town and final departures. The flight out of Antarctica will be the last of your unforgettable Antarctic memories before you delve back into the noise and heat of Africa. You will be transferred to your hotel where you will have a chance to relax in a hot bath and reflect on your Antarctic adventure! *This itinerary is entirely subject to weather conditions in Antarctica and is meant as a day-by-day guide of what to expect. The tour has an extra day scheduled in case of weather events restricting our departure or return. In other words, should weather conditions allow for our tour to happen exactly as planned, we shall return to Cape Town one day in advance of the tour end date as stated above.
