ANSWERS to the Homework Questions Prep for Class #6. Do Not View this until all questions are answered. Use the following to correct or improve your answers. Correct or append your answers using another color pencil or pen or font. Do not erase incorrect answers line them out or use strike through so the incorrect data are still readable. Gardner Textbook Review Questions for Class #6 GL04-01 What is the status of the runway lights for a landing at New Smyrna Beach Muni 1 on Rwy 15 after 2400? A For runway lights, key the transmitter the proper number of times on 122.8 MHz. B The lights on this runway are not operated at night. C The runway lights operate from dusk to dawn. GL04-02 The traffic pattern for light airplanes and gyroplanes at Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is changed to A 800 feet. B 1,000 feet. C 1,300 feet. Comment GL04-03 FAA Advisory Circulars (some free, others at cost) are available to all pilots and are obtained by A distribution from the nearest FAA district office. B ordering those desired. C subscribing to the Federal Register. Correct: They must be ordered from the Government Printing Office. Many Advisory Circulars can also be downloaded from the FAA website. 2014 Joseph J. Zubay 10/03/14 Page 1 of 11 Pages

GL04-04 Information concerning parachute jumping sites may be found in the A Graphic Notices and Supplemental Data. B Airport/Facility Directory. C NOTAMs. GL04-05 Between publication dates for sectional charts, information as to changes can be found in A Airport/Facility Directory B NOTAM(D)s C Aeronautical Information Manual Almost Correct: The A/FD will have some information, but the NOTAMs will be most current. Correct: NOTAMs will have the most current info Correct: NOTAMs will have the most current info however the term "NOTAM(D)" is now an obsolete term. NOTAMs are now formatted to a new internationally accepted standard (ICAO standard) so they are currently being called the New D NOTAM. Complete information can be found at: https://www.faasafety.gov/files/gslac/courses/content/43/595/decoding%20the%20d%20notam.pdf GL04-06 What is the general direction of movement of the other aircraft during a night flight if you observe a steady red light and a flashing red light ahead of you and at the same altitude? A The other aircraft is crossing to the left. B The other aircraft is crossing to the right. C The other aircraft is approaching head-on. Correct: The red light is on the Port (left) side of the aircraft. Red and Port are both short words, Green and Starboard (Right) are longer words -- or remember Port wine is Red. So if you see the red light on another plane, you are looking at its left side, so it is crossing from the right to the left. Incorrect: You would see red and green lights together. 2014 Joseph J. Zubay 10/03/14 Page 2 of 11 Pages

GL04-07 If an aircraft is involved in an accident which resulted in substantial damage to the aircraft, the nearest NTSB field office should be notified A immediately. B within 7 days. C within 10 days. GL04-08 Of the following incidents, which would require an immediate notification to the nearest NTSB field office. A An in-flight generator/alternator failure. B An in-flight fire. C Ground damage to the propeller blades. Correct: FAR 49 830; notify immediately, written report within 10 days. GL04-09 A private pilot, acting as Pilot In Command, or in any other capacity as a required flight crewmember, must have in their personal possession while aboard the aircraft A a current logbook endorsement to show that a flight review has been satisfactorily accomplished. B the current and appropriate pilot and medical certificates. C the pilot logbook to show recent experience requirements to serve as Pilot In Command have been met. Additionally, a picture ID is also required. Almost Correct: A student pilot must carry his/her logbook along with the medical and pilot certificates, and a picture ID but a Private Pilot does not need to carry his/her logbook and probably shouldn't. 2014 Joseph J. Zubay 10/03/14 Page 3 of 11 Pages

GL04-10 What is the duration, if any, of a private pilot certificate? A It expires 24 months after issuance. B As long as the flight review and the medical certificate are current. C Indefinite. GL04-11 A third-class medical certificate was issued on May 3, this year, to a pilot less than 40 years of age. to exercise the privileges of a private pilot certificate, the medical certificate will be valid through A May 31, one year later. B May 31, five years later. C May 3, 2 years later. Correct: The certificate does not expire, but in order to fly, one must also have a current medical certificate and flight review (or WINGS equivalent). Additionally, in order to carry passengers one must meet the currency requirements. Correct: Under 40, 5 yrs; 40 or older: 2 yrs, (61.23(d)) GL04-12 To act as Pilot In Command of an airplane that has more than 200 hp, a peson is required to do which of the following? A Make three solo takeoffs and landings in such an airplane. B Receive flight instruction and an endorsement in an airplane that has more than 200 hp. C Hold a 200 hp class rating. Incorrect. This is not only wrong but a very unsafe idea. Almost A pilot must receive and log both flight instruction and ground instruction in an airplane that has more than 200 hp and receive a High Performance endorsement. Incorrect: There is no such class rating. 2014 Joseph J. Zubay 10/03/14 Page 4 of 11 Pages

GL04-13 To act as Pilot In Command of an airplane with passengers aboard, the pilot must have made at least three takeoffs and landings in an aircraft the same category and class within the preceding A 120 days. B 90 days. C 12 months. GL04-14 If recency of experience requirements for night flight have not been met and official sunset is 1830, the latest time passengers can be carried is A 1829. B 1859. C 1929. Incorrect: But remember to turn on the navigation lights at sunset. Correct: Aeronautical night starts one hour after local sunset, and ends one hour before local sunrise. GL04-15 To meet the recent flight experience requirements for acting as Pilot In Command carrying passengers at night, a pilot must have made, within the preceding 90 days and at night, at least A three takeoffs and landings to a full stop in the same category and class of aircraft to be used. B three takeoffs and landings in the same category and class of aircraft to be used. C three takeofs and landings to a full stop in the same category, but not necessarily in the same class, of aircraft to be used. 2014 Joseph J. Zubay 10/03/14 Page 5 of 11 Pages

GL04-16 In regard to privileges and limitations, a private pilot may A not pay less than the pro-rata share of the operating expenses of a flight with passengers, provided the expenses involve only fuel, oil, airport expenditures, or rental fees. B act as Pilot In Command of an aircraft carrying a passenger for compensation if the flight is in connection with a business or employment. C not be paid in any manner for the operating expenses of a flight. GL04-17 What preflight action is required for every flight? A Check weather reports and forecasts. B Determine runway length at airports of intended use. C Determine alternatives if the flight cannot be completed. Correct: This isn't implying that A. and C. are not required for most flights but it is saying that B. in addition to some other things, is required for each and every flight. Ref 91.103 GL04-18 In addition to other preflight actions for a VFR flight away from the vicinity of the departure airport, regulations require the Pilot In Command to A file a flight plan. B check each fuel tank visually to ensure that it is full. C determine runway lengths at airports of intended use and the airplane's takeoff and landing distance data. Incorrect: This is good practice, but not required by the regulations. Incorrect: It is good practice to check the tanks visually, but full tanks are not required on each departure. Some airplanes cannot carry passengers if the tanks are full (weight limitations). 2014 Joseph J. Zubay 10/03/14 Page 6 of 11 Pages

GL04-19 Under what conditions may a person act as Pilot In Command of an aircraft after consuming alcohol which may affect that person's faculties? A Passengers may not be carried. B A waiver must be obtained. C Only after the expiration of 8 hours. Correct: "8 hours bottle to throttle." In addition, there must be no effects remaining from the alcohol (e.g. headache), and the blood alcohol level must be less than 0.04% -- so more than 8 hours may be required to meet the other two requirements. GL04-20 What is the fuel requirement for flight under VFR at night? A Enough to complete the flight at normal cruising flight with adverse wind conditions. B Enough to fly to the first point of intended landing and to fly after that for 30 minutes at normal cruising speed. C Enough to fly to the first point of intended landing and to fly after that for 45 minutes at normal cruising speed. Almost Correct: This is the day VFR minimum fuel requirement. GL04-21 Where, in the 48 contiguous United States and District of Columbia, is a radar beacon transponder equipped with Mode C required? A In Class D airspace. B In Class B airspace and in controlled airspace above 10,000 feet MSL. C In class B airspace. Correct: A more complete answer is: "In Class B airspace, in the Class B Mode C veil, in and above Class C airspace, and above 10,000 feet MSL." 2014 Joseph J. Zubay 10/03/14 Page 7 of 11 Pages

GL04-22 An aircraft had a 100-hour inspection when the tachometer read 1259.6. When is the next 100-hour inspection due? A 1269.6 hours. B 1309.6 hours. C 1359.6 hours. Correct: The 100-hour limitation may be exceeded by not more than 10 hours and only while enroute to reach a place where the inspection can be done. 91.409(b) GL04-23 The 100-hour inspection was due at 3302.5 hours, but was actually done at 3309.5 hours. When is the next 100- hour inspection due? A 3409.5 hours. B 3402.5 hours. C 3809.5 hours. Correct: The excess time used to reach a place where the inspection can be done must be included in computing the next 100 hours of time in service. 91.409(b) GL04-24 Which operation would be described as preventive maintenance? A Removing and installing glider wings. B Repair of landing gear brace struts. C Refinishing decorative coating of fuselage. 2014 Joseph J. Zubay 10/03/14 Page 8 of 11 Pages

GL04-25 Preventive maintenance has been performed on an aircraft. What paperwork is required? A A full, detailed description of the work done must be entered in the airframe logbook. B The date the work as completed and the name of the person who did the work must be entered in the pilot's logbook. C The signature, certificate number, and kind of certificate held by the person approving the work, and a description of the work must be entered in the aircraft maintenance records. GL04-26 You plan a night flight in uncontrolled airspace, intending to stay about 1,000 feet above the terrain. What cloud clearance and visibility restrictions must you observe? You do not have an instrument rating. A One mile visibility and clear of clouds. B Three miles visibility, 500 feet below, 1,000 feet above, and 2,000 feet horizontally from all clouds. C One mile visibility, 500 feet below, 1,000 feet above, and 2,000 feet horizontally from all clouds. And the person approving the work must be the person doing the work and must be the owner of the aircraft. Almost correct. If the flight you were planning was a flight to practice take-offs and landings and you were staying in the pattern, fine. But if you were planning to leave the pattern you need three miles visibility, 500 feet below, 1,000 feet above, and 2,000 feet horizontally from all clouds Almost correct. This is the rule for night clearance and visibility in Class G away from the airport. If the flight you were planning was a flight to practice take-offs and landings and you were staying in the pattern, you need only to remain clear of clouds and maintain a minimum of 1 mile flight visibility. Incorrect. 2014 Joseph J. Zubay 10/03/14 Page 9 of 11 Pages

GL04-27 Would your answer to question 26 be different if you planned to fly more than 1,200 feet above the ground in Class G (uncontrolled) airspace? Note: In the Gardner textbook, this question refers to question 21 which almost certainly is a typo. Yes No 2014 Joseph J. Zubay 10/03/14 Page 10 of 11 Pages
