DURBIN CROSSING POND PRESS Happy November Durbin Crossing residents! We have reached the season of ghoulies, ghosties, and wee little beasties although it was hard to get in the spirit when it was unseasonably warm most of October. There is, however, something to be said for the kids who get to trick-or-treat without winter coats over their costumes. The weathermen do promise cooler weather soon, but I ve lived in Florida a long time, and I know her fickle ways, we might still be able to visit the beach on Thanksgiving. No matter the temperature, the shorter days do mean an essential end to the aquatic growing season, and a cooling off period for the ponds. Fall and winter should bring some new and interesting migratory birds to our waterways as well. The infrastructure and storm-water management aspects of the ponds were briefly mentioned during the April article, so I thought I would go a little more in-depth, especially after our recent bouts of heavy rainfall. Ponds are designed and dug to certain specifications: from the acreage and depth, all the way down to the angle of the slope of the sides of the ponds. The size of each pond or permanent pool is determined by space available and the amount of water that the developers calculate will end up in the ponds after storms or normal rain events. Once it enters the ponds, the water flow will slow, which allows particulate material and pollutants to settle to the bottom of the pond before any excess surface water is drained from the pond via the concrete weirs. These weirs can act in two ways. When present at the edge of a pond that flows into a natural area, they act as outflow structures that regulate the speed and amount of water that flows from the pond. Small pipes or notches on the bottom allow lesser amounts of water to flow from the site after a light rainfall, while the larger openings on the top allow for higher volumes of water to escape after a large rain event, like a hurricane, when massive amounts of rain fall in a short period of time. When there is a weir on the side of the pond, where no obvious wetland discharge area exists, the weir may act as a control structure- keeping the water level in the pond at a certain level before it flows into another pond a short distance away. When ponds come up after a rain event, they will take some time to drain, so don t worry if you don t see the water level dropping right away. Because of their importance in regulating pond levels, and keeping our homes dry during inclement weather, it s important we all do our part in keeping the control structures clear. Our techs clear the weirs and bleed pipes periodically to keep water flowing from the site, but making sure trash and debris in the roads don t get into the storm drains will keep that debris out of the ponds in the first place. Trees, branches, or other large yard debris should also be disposed of properly, and kept out of the ponds as much as possible. Together, we can keep our ponds looking great and functioning properly. --Happy Thanksgiving to all our Durbin friends and families!
