Club History Our 75 th Celebratory Year The following is an article taken from The official history from 1937 1958 as edited by Steve Chandler 2005. Over the ensuing weeks all Rotarians of the club will be receiving a copy of the complete document for their personal records. In CONTACT we will each week include a section of document for your reading. Paul Harris pays a visit The Rotary Club of Essendon began meeting at Edenhope of a Tuesday luncheon from the 5 th of March 1935 and on the 19 th of March the club hosted visiting Rotarian Paul Harris, (the founder of Rotary), from the Rotary Club of Chicago. In his address to the new club Paul Harris said He congratulated the members in their decision to form a Rotary Club of Essendon. He was astounded at the success of Rotary in Australia and was greatly interested in the smaller clubs where he found the same spirit of good fellowship that prevailed throughout Rotary in general. He did not like to see clubs grow to fast. Paul Harris congratulated members upon their custom of singing grace before meals. He felt that people as a whole failed to recognise the value of song in everyday life. He appreciated the value of music of a suitable type, not including jazz, in Rotary life.

Club History A year that was 1982 1983 President: Jack Honson Secretary: Sam Tartaglia

A place to put things BITS OF HISTORY During the past Rotary year, a project was commenced to locate and collate our club history, (and associated items), with a view to it being securely stored in one place, for ease of access in the future. The project continues with the status it deserves, in this, our 75th Anniversary year, and will be successfully completed before the Rotary year ends. Steve Chandler will lead an enthusiastic group of people to continue the work commenced this year, and get the job done. Over the long history of our club, many people have acted as custodians for valuable pieces of club history and memorabilia. In the first instance, It is important that all items are located, and catalogued. Ultimately the history will be digitally recorded, and items of memorabilia will be stored in a secure, central place. District Conference 2009-10 Perth is the venue for the upcoming District Conference, which is to be held from the evening of Thursday 5 March (optional cocktail function) to lunchtime Sunday March 7 (Labour Day weekend). Conference speakers include burns specialist & Australian of the Year, Dr Fiona Wood and WA businesswoman Janet Holmes à Court Whilst early bird registration is open from September 15 until December 5, you may like to start planning your trip and making bookings (there is an excellent travel agent in Rose St. Essendon) before then. There are some great places to visit either before or after the Conference. If you are interested in attending or just want to find out what a District Conference is, Contact Glenn Smith for further information. The address for the Conference website is http://www.rotarydistrict9800.org.au/members/conference 2010 It would be of great value to the project, if those members who are holding anything at all of relevance could advise Steve, or Pat O Connell. No-one underestimates the size of this task, nor the work involved to complete it - 75 years is a lot of history. That the Rotary Foundation in the largest privately funded foundation in the world
