My plan was to be in Minneapolis by Thursday at 6:30 to join MN Chapter O on their supper ride. I left around 9 am, my first stop was in Jamestown to visit my mother, sort of scared her with all my gear on. After about an hour visit I was back on the road, then stopped in Fargo for lunch. Well I guess I let the time slip a little more than I thought I had available. When I hit the road again, checking on the GPS time of arrival I realized It was going to be a race to get to the meeting site for the ride. So I pushed along and hoped I wouldn't run into any major construction or anything that would delay me any further. As I pulled into the meeting area, everyone was just getting the final ride instructions..it was that close! We had a great evening ride in northern side of the cities and a great supper with the chapter, what a fun group! Thanks Chapter MN-O! After supper I rode down to Hudson, WI to spend the night. The next morning I continued to Wisconsin Dells where a Goldwing group was having a spring ride in, which was the reason for this trip. But this is where things get interesting. As I was riding toward the Dells on I-90 I met up with another Goldwing pulling a trailer. I noticed it had a CB antenna, so we connected on the radio. This couple was also heading for this ride-in. I was in the lead when out on my right side I saw a very large eagle coming in with both feet out and open claws. This eagle was a full adult with all the great colors. He saw something in the ditch that he wanted to eat. My first thought was Wow what a cool site.. then I thought this is going to be a very close encounter if he doesn't land. Now remember I'm moving around 73 miles an hour, interstate speeds with cars, trucks and this other bike around me and things are happening real fast at this point. Well this eagle is coming down and down, then it grabs it s lunch and does not stop. Now as it takes off I'm right there! As the eagle uses it's very powerful strength to lift up I'm thinking I will be taking this hit right on the windshield so I ducked behind the windshield and handle bars. I just missed this bird, but as I was tucked down I looked out of the corner of my side and I saw this bird pumping these very large wings to pull away. I sat back up, I June 2017 Page 1 of 11

key the CB and said "WOW that was a close one", the rider asked if I hit it. I said "no". He responded, whatever the eagle had picked up, it dropped it. So it's a great story and a great reminder to keep your eye out for anything and everything when you are out there riding. When something like this happens you have to decide what your reaction will be and hope it is the correct reaction. What did I do? I didn't even disengage the cruise control, and I ducked down as far as I could. I did have my hands ready on the break and clutch. Thinking back if I had started to slow down when I first saw the eagle it might have changed the timing a little, but because of all the traffic not reacting at all was the right decision. Bottom line - this bird would have really hurt had it hit me or the bike! Ok enough of that, back to business. June 24th Open Road Honda will be having an appreciation day from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. ND Chapter C has been invited to set up a table so I need volunteers to man the table and answer any questions about GWRRA. It's a great time to spread the word and what the heck, it gives us time to talk about the great machines we ride.. So please drop me an email if you can help the chapter out. Lastly, don't forget about the District Rally on July 7th and 8th - get your registrations in soon. My email address is cwald@bis.midco.net Clint Wald ND Chapter C I met up with Minnesota Chapter O (left) we had a great ride on the northern side of the city and then a supper meeting. Then on to Wisconsin Dells where I met up with Chapter R (right) for their spring ride-in! June 2017 Page 2 of 11

OUR EDUCATORS Scott and Kristine Eckroth Things to Remember When Riding in Constructions Zones Road construction season and motorcycle season always coincide throughout the year. As the weather warms, you'll see more construction zones when you're out for a ride. We know you're no stranger to the bright orange work signs of a construction zone that tell us all to slow down and use caution. It's an essential warning as you travel through these zones, especially for motorcycle riders. With uneven roads, loose gravel, or even debris littering your path, it's no surprise that motorcyclists need a heightened level of awareness in construction zones. One slight mistake and you could be seriously injured in a motorcycle accident. Look Out for Work Zone Hazards For bikers, any change to the road's surface could mean serious consequences. Since construction zones roads are constantly changing, it's important to keep an eye out for the following road hazards: Rocks, debris, or loose gravel in the road Drop-offs and uneven pavement Exposed manhole covers Shifting lanes Pooling water Traffic stopping suddenly Workers near the road Areas without shoulders, and many more Poor road conditions, negligent drivers, and poorly marked road changes can pose serious dangers for motorcyclists. Road awareness is extremely important when riding through work zones. Know Construction Zone Laws Construction zone violations are different from state to state. Did you know, in some states your fine doubles if you're cited in a marked construction area? Knowing the laws for marked work zones help you save money and stay safe. June 2017 Page 3 of 11

Trike Course 2017, Minneapolis, MN New Brighton Community Center (classroom portion) Mounds View High School (range portion) Saturday, June 24-8:00am - 5:00pm and Sunday, June 25-8:00am (we may finish earlier depending the number of trainees) Saturday training includes both classroom and range instruction. This is advantageous to those that are new or newer to riding a Trike (others that have done training elsewhere may need the classroom training as well). Sunday will be range training only course for those that may have previously completed the classroom/range instruction (training will be four to five hours, depending on number of trainees) Classroom portion will be held at the New Brighton Community Center and the range portion at Mounds View High School in Minneapolis - just ½ mile from the range. Instructors are Dan and Kris, and they know their stuff! Trike fees are calculated to cover only the expenses of the course so, the more participants the lower the fee. Once there is an idea of the number of trainees fees will be set. Fees are per trike and the cost is the same with or without classroom training. If you know anyone else that might be interested, please let me know. We do still have open spots both days. Please RSVP to my email below no later than March 30 th if they are interested.
