Notes from your Chapter Directors: HELLO SPRING!!!! Seems like we didn't have much of a winter, but the rollercoaster ride of being warm then cold was getting a bit old... Seeing all the flowers blooming and the stores having their spring flowers all displayed has us excited for getting out the bikes and riding! Speaking of riding, before you gas up the bike and head out, please remember to check the tires (air, valve stems, etc.), oil, battery, and all that needs checked after being in the garage all winter. It's best to be safe than to get out on the road and break down!! Our Chapter hasn't had many rides yet due to the weather, but we did have a game night at Essen s, attended the Food Expo in Springfield and breakfast at the Front Porch in Modesto. They are well known for their HUGE pancakes, good food and great prices! We are planning our ride schedule and will have plenty of rides for everyone to join us on. We have had several Chapter E members who have been sick or in the hospital, so please keep them all in your thoughts. Hope you are all getting as excited as we are about the upcoming season of great rides and adventures! Get your bike(s) in shape, polish them up and get ready to ride.. Take care, ride safe!! Rick & Maggie Filson 2017 Chapter E Directors Past events: February 11 th we had a breakfast ride at Nick s in Jerseyville. We had 12 people in attendance with Bill & Callie and Jerry & Cathleen riding. The food was great and they did a good job with service. Immediately after breakfast, Bill & Callie and Terry & Nancy went to Bethalto to the funeral of George Schlotter. The funeral home was completely full. During the service, a little girl (maybe George s granddaughter) was holding Gizmo, George s little dog that always rode with him. It was a very nice service. February 11 th in the evening we had a game night at Ed & Jackie Essen s home. We had a great time playing games and snacking on the delicious food. There was at least 10 in attendance.

February 18 th we had our annual dress-up night at Magnolia s in Carlinville. We had 19 people attend. The food was excellent and we all had a great time. February 25 th Niehaus had a Roll-Out of the 2017 Goldwing. We had 20 members in attendance. There was some great bar-b-q and a Goldwing Trivia contest we lost. Future events: April 1 st is the meet the chapters kick-off. This year it will be in Pontiac, IL. at Edinger s Filling Station restaurant, 423 W. Madison. April 8 th and 9 th chapter U will be hosting TRC (8 th ) & ARC (9 th ) in Vandalia. See Steve Brungard for details. April 13 th is our monthly meeting. We will meet at Miners restaurant in Gillespie. Eat at 5:30 p.m., the meeting will start at 7. April 19 th several from the chapter are planning on heading to Pigeon Forge, TN. for the Tennessee Spring Fling. It is April 20 th to the 22 nd. If you are interested is going, contact Bill and Callie for details. April 22 nd we are taking a ride to the Lantern Pub in Ashley, IL. Meeting at Niehaus parking lot, kickstands up at 10 a.m. April 30 th is the blessing of the bike at Alto Pass. There is no chapter ride scheduled to this event. May 11 th is our monthly meeting. We will meet at Miners restaurant in Gillespie. Eat at 5:30 p.m., the meeting will start at 7.

MAY 19-21, 2017 Keep your mind on the ride If you go to You Tube and search for a video about a biker getting rear-ended and landing on his feet at GossipBerry.com, you will feel like the person in the video for a brief moment. This experience of watching someone get hit by an SUV from behind and survive really puts things in perspective. You realize how quickly things can happen. Even though the motorcyclist did nothing wrong, his bike is still totaled. If you put yourself in his place for that moment, you start to think about what he might have done differently. If you can place yourself out of the way of the on-coming vehicle, you will have a good chance of avoiding any sudden impact. Move to the shoulder or move ahead of the car stopped in front of you. This way you can use them as a cushion so that you aren't involved in the accident. Move to the right side of the lane, rather than the center to give yourself a chance to move out of the way. Another strategy is to rapidly flash your brake light by tapping a brake lever. Always keep the bike in gear and your right hand on the throttle. Pay attention to what's coming up behind you and how fast they are approaching. Be particularly aware in situations with low visibility or certain times of the day when visibility can be limited. Sunset can be really hard for drivers' to see traffic signals and tail lights. What happens when you come to a complete stop at a cross walk to avoid a pedestrian, and the driver behind you doesn't see you? What if their attention is on something or someone else and you wind up get plowed into at a high rate of speed? People may not be expecting to encounter a pedestrian crosswalk on a very busy city street. We talked about intersections being the most dangerous situations for a motorcyclist because cars will turn left in front of you. They may come out from side streets or alleyways to hit you as well. But there is one more direction we need to worry about. We will have to pay attention to what's coming at us from behind, also. Distracted driving can cause a fender bender, but for a biker, a fender bender can be fatal. Take care and stay safe, Nancy
