Studebaker Corral 10. New Membership Form Events 7. October Meeting Details 8. Studebaker Calendar President s Message I ve just completed a long overdue upgrade to my 37 Studebaker. I replaced the tires, 3 of which were on the car and were worn when I bought it 53 years ago. The fourth was a swap meet tire that I bought at a flea market for $10. I thought at the time new tires would look out of place, given the beaten-to-death look of the rest of the car. I had decided years ago not to change the exterior of it. It had been used as a pickup before I got it, to pump oil wells around Fostoria, Ohio. The rear tires were heavy-duty, knobby, mud and snow tires and were necessary for going off-road to pump the wells. The oversized trunk lid was always up, and the trunk contained drums of materials needed to pump the wells. Pipe was hung from the passenger side of the car, and the paint was chipped on the passenger side door from the pipe. I probably would have never worn out the rear knobby tires, but I decided that if I put new tires on the front, I should also replace the rears. Another reason to replace the rears was the howling noise they made at speeds over 25 mph. I hadn t looked at the front tires in a long time and was surprised to see they were worn to the point that you could barely see any tread on them. The tires that were specified for the car were 6.00 x 16 and they are still made by Coker Tire. I bought a set of 4 blackwall tires from them that look like period-correct Firestone Tires. Whitewall tires would look really out of place on it and the blackwalls do not stand out as being new. I may even start driving it over 35 mph occasionally. I still will not be taking it on the expressway however. It is a 6 cylinder without overdrive and I think that a cruising speed of 50 or 55 mph is about max for it. I still have to get the front camber set on it. I replaced the kingpins a few years ago and the camber went from about 10 degrees to about +10 degrees. The old tires were worn on the inside edges, and after the kingpin change they were wearing on the outside and it steered good, so I didn t align it. It is a Dictator Model 6A with knee action front suspension and requires a thin wrench with about 1.25 or 1.375 jaws. None of the local tire shops still have the wrenches to set the camber so if someone has a wrench that will work I would love to borrow or buy it. It also may require 2 wrenches; the manual does not say anything about the exact procedure to set it. If anyone has ever set camber on one of these cars, I would like to find out more about how it is done. - Loren Nelson - - 2 -
