R A Newsletter of the LGB Model MdlRailroad Club of Chicago All Aboard! by Wayne Zoeteman Trains, trains and more trains. That s what I keep seeing all around me. And I am not even at a show or exactly looking for them. If you have the TV channel BBC America then you know what I am talking about. There was a show on there James May Toy Stories that did a show on Lego s, clay, erector sets, and yes, trains. The show went like this: talk about his childhood fascination with the toy and then put it on a grand scale. The train show put HO scale trains down a former line in England, where the show was filmed. It made to about 20 miles down the track before the wheels gave out. I wonder how long a G scale train would run for? Anybody up for the challenge sounds like a project for next summer. If you have been watching any commercial TV lately I am sure you have seen the commercial for Capital One venture card. It is the one where the grandparents and going to see their grandkids via an airplane. Well, at the very end of the commercial a model train appears. And yes, it is an LGB starter set!! Now, if you don t have BBC America and you haven t seen the commercial, then check out youtube. com. They not only have the episode and the commercial but also have LGB prototypes in all of their glory. I also was thrilled to find Aster trains. I couldn t believe that they made all of the diverse models that they make. Don't miss out! Signup for the Morton Arboretum display show and Brookfield Zoo display Show today!! Zoo and Morton Arboretum. Both shows need a lot of manpower throughout the holiday season so any day you can spare come on out and have some fun. You might even see some of the trains that you have been seeing on YouTube and the commercial. Hope to see you at the shows, Wayne S. Zoeteman, Club President. c Did I get you into the mood for enjoying model trains? Well, you re in luck, twice actually. We have two shows coming up, Holiday magic at Brookfield 1

It s hard to believe how fast this year has gone by. It feels like we were just finishing the Lyon s display. Actually, two weeks from now, we will be starting one of the busiest times our club has ever experienced. Two display layouts running at the same time. Thirteen evenings at Brookfield Zoo, and thirty-five days at the Morton Arboretum. November 13 th at 10:00am, we will be setting up an indoor layout at Brookfield Zoo. We will finish on the 14 th if needed. This will be part of the 29 th annual Holiday Magic display. Our layout will be in the lower level of the Safari Grill restaurant, at the east end. You will need to enter the zoo at the south gate to get free admission and parking. If your bringing decorations, or trains, there will be zoo staff with golf carts available inside the zoo entrance to help carry everything. The layout theme will be -- Toyland. We can use any Toys or Christmas related decorations. We can use old vintage toys, games, cars, planes, etc., also Wrapped Christmas packages. We want it to look like and Old Fashion Christmas morning with gifts & toys under the tree. Trains will be running on the layout a total of 13 days in December. (4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 1) Running times will be 4:00pm to 9:00pm. Please sign up for this show as soon as possible. Your name must be on the list to receive free parking and admission. The following weekend, November 20 th, we will be at the Morton Arboretum to begin the layout set-up. The display will be in the same room, using basically the same wood structure as the last couple of years. This year, the Enchanted Railroad theme is Mother Earth. The layout will be in operation from November 26 th through January 2 rd. Not including Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, or New Years Day. A total of 35 days. Running times will be 9:00am to 4:00pm each day. Call Kevin Kell if you have any questions about this years display. A lot of man-hours will be needed to cover both shows. The on-line sign-up forms have a listing for
morning and afternoon on each day, plus evenings for the zoo. It should be easier to fit the shows into your schedule if you only do partial days. We really only need 2 or 3 people operating a layout at any given time. Let s all work together and monitor the web site, and keep the days filled in. If you have any questions about either of these shows, see additional info in this newsletter, or you can call me or the appropriate show coordinator. You can visit our website at LGBmrrcc.com and log into the Members Only section for important information or schedule changes. If you have problems logging into the website, please let me know. That s about all I have this month. If you have any thoughts or questions, please feel free to call or send me an E-mail. Bill Halupka - Home #(708) 485-7193 E-mail LGBer0672@aol.com Kevin Kell - Home # (708) 524-0483 Until next month, keep those trains rollin! c MORTON ARBORETUM 2010 Version We have had several meetings with the Morton Arboretum and all the planning is finalized. I was checking my files, and this is the tenth year in a row that we are having a display layout at the Arboretum. As in the past, club members will have many opportunities to participate. We will be setting up on Saturday November 20 th and the first day of running is the day after Thanksgiving on November 26. We will be running everyday except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day through January 2, 2011. We have not finalized if we will be running on News Year Day. Tear down will be late Sunday afternoon on January 2. This is a great time to exercise your equipment, share the hobby with the general public, and enjoy some camaraderie with fellow club members. This year the Arboretum has gone out for artistic proposals to obtain some new ideas for the display. The winning proposal is titled Mother Earth, and it will include the globe being held by a tree with Santa circling the globe and a train running directly beneath. As of now, there are omly 9 volunteers signed up for setup and very few signed up to operate trains on a daily basis. It is very important we keep the online schedule up-todate so we have engineers to bring our layout to life on all the days we are open. So go to the Club website to sign up or give me Kevin Kell a call at (708) 524-0483. 3
