Acknowledgements The production of this bulletin is based partly on available public sources, and partly on data provided by various agencies (Civil Aviation Authority, Athens International Airport, Border Checkpoints, National Flight Coordination Authority, Association of Greek Passenger Shipping Companies), to whom we are especially grateful. The Editors Aris Ikkos Research Director SETE Institute Evangelia Lamprou Researcher Statistician SETE Institute intelligence@insete.gr Disclaimer This Bulletin publishes data obtained from other sources and not from primary INSETE surveys. Though INSETE makes every effort to ensure the sources are valid and the republished data is correct, it is not liable to third parties, nor for the use they make of the data in the Bulletin. We also note that the data presented in various tables of the Bulletin are often temporary and subject to subsequent revision. A short presentation of the key sources SETE Intelligence uses, along with information on the methods used by each source/survey and the differences between them, is available here. The different methodology used by each of the above sources as well as the variable measured in each case, require that as many sources as possible are combined to achieve a comprehensive overview of the issues under examination. For further information, clarification or suggestions, please contact the editors. Statistical Bulletin November 2018 3

Comments-Observations on the Tables and Data of the Bulletin International Tourism Arrivals: (1) The data reflect arrivals of passengers of international flights irrespective of domicile. An exception are data from the Athens airport which are related only to foreign residents. (2) The data for the last available month for the Athens International Airport are an estimate of SETE Intelligence. (3) Airports are classified as follows: Dodecanese: Rhodes - Kos - Karpathos, Crete: Heraklion - Chania, Ionian: Corfu - Zakynthos - Kefalonia - Aktio, Cyclades: Mykonos - Santorini, Peloponnese: Araxos - Kalamata, Others: Samos - Skiathos - Kavala - Lesvos. (4) Type Ι: Civil Aviation Authority final data - Type II: Civil Aviation Authority temporary data - subject to review. Domestic arrivals at main Greek airports: (1) Passengers travelling round trip are counted twice: both when arriving at their destination and when returning home. (2) The data for the last available month for the Athens International Airport are an estimate of SETE Intelligence. (3) Airports are classified as follows: Dodecanese: Rhodes - Kos - Karpathos, Crete: Heraklion - Chania, Ionian: Corfu - Zakynthos - Kefalonia - Aktio, Cyclades: Mykonos - Santorini - Paros, Others: Samos - Skiathos - Kavala - Lesvos. (4) Type Ι: Civil Aviation Authority final data - Type II: Civil Aviation Authority temporary data - subject to review. Airline Seat Scheduling The data are provided by the Hellenic Slot Coordination Authority for all airports, with the exception of the AIA. The data were exported on 31/3/2018. The data provide a snapshot for the specific point in time on 31/3/2018. Any cancellations or extra flights added immediately after data export will be seen when the data are next exported. As a result, the total number of scheduled seats may vary from month to month. The same applies for 2017, since the same snapshot was used. Road Arrivals: Road arrivals are recorded by the local police departments based on nationality, irrespective of the permanent domicile. Consequently, the data include immigrants in Greece returning from trips abroad. Countries are classified as follows: Albania: Kakavia - Krystallopigi - Sagiada - Mertzani, Bulgaria: Ormenio - Kyprinos - Nymfea - Promachonas - Exohi - Ag. Konstantinos, FYROM: Evzoni - Doirani - Niki, Turkey: Kastanies - Kipoi. Demand for Hotel Accommodation Services: data are presented related to the demand for hotel accommodation for international markets and Greece, with regard to various destinations in Greece and in competing countries. The data were Statistical Bulletin November 2018 4

provided by trivago, and are therefore more related to the market of individual travellers. Nevertheless, they give us important information on the trends in various markets and the different destinations. Consumer Confidence Index (CCI): The OECD Consumer Confidence Index measures the level of consumer confidence in each country. Given that holidays are deeply interwoven with consumer confidence, this index is a very good indication of anticipated demand for each market. The higher/lower numbers indicate higher/lower levels of consumer confidence and, thus, increased/reduced inclination to visit a given holiday destination. Statistical Bulletin November 2018 5

The rise in domestic airport arrivals continued across the country in October 2018. Specifically, a +0.5% increase was recorded, compared to October 2017, according to the data available from the country s major airports, with 714,000 airport arrivals compared to 710,000 in October 2017. The October increase is due to the regional airports, which posted an increase by +2.0%/+7,000, while the AIA recorded a drop by -0.8%/-3,000. The largest percentage increase in October was noted at Kefalonia airport by +34.4%/+600 passengers. A drop of -4.1%/-2,000 was recorded in the Dodecanese, and -7.1%/-6,000 in Crete. The decrease in Crete is entirely due to Chania airport, which recorded a drop by -38.7%/-13,000 passengers, as opposed to Heraklion airport, which saw an increase of +14.0%/+7,000. During the January-October 2018 period domestic air traffic recorded an increase of +3.2%/+218,000 passengers. The Athens International Airport saw an increase of +5.2%/+170,000 passengers. Regional airports marked a marginal increase of +1.3%/+48,000 passengers. Thessaloniki recorded a drop of -5.9%/-60,000 passengers. This drop is also due to the fact that a large portion of the flights to/from Thessaloniki were directed to Kavala airport due to the reconstruction work underway at Macedonia Airport. In terms of destinations, during the January-October 2018 period, the Ionian was up by +14.4%/+29,000, the Cyclades by +9.4%/+96,000 and the Dodecanese by +1.2%/+6,000 passengers. Crete recorded a drop of -2.2%/-19,000, entirely due to Chania airport, which recorded a large drop of -27.2%/-101,000 passengers, as opposed to Heraklion airport which posted an increase of +16.8%/+81,000. Demand for Hotel Accommodation Services (in cooperation with trivago) October 2018 Statistical Bulletin November 2018 22

Introduction - Methodological Note This unit presents the data relating to the demand for hotel accommodation for international markets and Greece, in different destinations in Greece and in competing countries. The data were provided by trivago, and are therefore more related to the market of individual travellers. Nevertheless, they give us important information on the trends in various markets and the different destinations. For the better interpretation of the information, we must take into consideration that they are derived from administrative data from the trivago records without the statistical processing for reduction to the total. They are therefore subject to the following restrictions: - The penetration of trivago differs from one market to the other. - Hotel prices as well as the ranking of destinations and markets are based on clickouts 1. - The month refers to the month of arrival at the hotel and not the month of the booking. - Hotel prices are the weighted averages of the prices. The weighing is based on the number of clickouts. - Types of trips: o Midweek: a trip shorter than 6 overnight stays, most of them days of the week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday), o Weekend: a trip shorter than 6 overnight stays, most of them on the weekend (Friday, Saturday or Sunday), o Vacations: a trip lasting 6 overnight stays or more 1 The clickout happens when the visitor leaves the Trivago site by clicking on a partner online travel agent. Statistical Bulletin November 2018 23

Type of trip to Greece In October 2018, 43% of the bookings were for Midweek trips, 38% for Weekend trips and 20% for Vacation trips. In the same month of 2017, Midweek trips were 42%, Weekend trips 37% and Vacation trips 20%. Compared to the previous year, a decrease is noted in Midweek trips and an increase in Weekend trips.
