the trip The Moorish Kingdom of Granada was established in the thirteenth century encompassing the provinces of Granada, Málaga, and Almería. For 250 years the region had a thriving Islamic culture evidenced today by the architectural legacies found throughout the region. The Alhambra, a Moorish citadel and palace, is representative of the Muslim, Jewish and Christian influences which affected the Kingdom of Granada throughout the centuries. During this week long walking tour there will be ample time to contemplate the rich history of the region with a series of walks to visit centuries old Moorish towns and villages in the high valleys of the Alpujarras and the Tahá de Pitres, crumbling fortresses and castles and the troglodyte quarter of Guadix. Set at the foot of the snow capped Sierra Nevada mountain range, Granada is a natural base to traverse impressive trails before spending time in the cities Albayzin quarter and the Alhambra Palace. Note: The June-August departures follow slightly altered itineraries, with inclusions provided to take account of the 'Corpus Christi' and 'Veranos del Corral' festivals or summer walking opportunities i.e. an ascent of the Mulhacén (3482m), the highest mountain in the Iberian peninsula. the region Granada is one of the main cities of Andalusia, with 300,000 inhabitants (not counting some 50,000 students - it has one of Spain's most prestigious universities, founded in 1526). An ancient city, reminders of the past are to be found on every corner. Particularly noteworthy are the famous Nazari palaces of the Alhambra and Generalife, and the many other Moorish remains. Granada is the capital of one of the most mountainous provinces of Spain. There are several sierras (mountain ranges), the most important of which have been declared Natural Parks, including the Sierra de Baza, Sierra de Castril, Sierra de Huétor, and above all the Sierra Nevada, the highest peaks of mainland Spain and a nature reserve of the utmost importance. This enormous range dominates Granada city and the towns and villages of the lower slopes, in the Alpujarras on the south side and the Marquesado de Zenete on the north. how to book To book a UTRACKS trip, complete our booking form which is found at the back of our brochure or can be downloaded from our website www.utracks.com.
