Enjoy a walking tour of Old Havana. View the diverse architecture of the city. Participants will walk through Havana s oldest neighborhood to learn about its historic, architectural, and cultural significance. The area was declared a World Heritage Site in 1982 by UNESCO. The group will explore the four main plazas: Plaza de Armas, which originally housed the main administrative buildings of the colony; Plaza Vieja, the oldest of the plazas; and Plaza de la Cathedral, site of the baroque cathedral of Havana. This site visit will include other important places such as Plaza de San Francisco, site of the basilica of San Francisco and the old Havana stock exchange. 5:00pm Check into our casas particulares. 8:00pm Welcome Dinner at San Cristobal Paladar. 1
Saturday, July 13 th (B,L) 10:o0 am Welcome Briefing by the insightful architect, Miguel Coyula to discuss the history and development of the city. http://www.american.edu/americantoday/campus-news/20101123-cubascholar-miguel-coyula.cfm 11:00am Casa De Africa in Old Havana to learn about the history of Africans in Cuba and we examine slavery from 1520 till 1886. The museum focuses on the continent of Africa and Cuba s African heritage, reflecting in a simple, but deep way, history, religion, art, wisdom, and emancipation battles. The Casa de África is devoted to research and the promotion of African culture and how it has shaped and defined Cuban culture. 1:00pm 2:30 pm Optional Cultural Acitvity Palacio de la Rumba. 6:00pm Dinner tonight is free but we will have a reservation at a local restaurant and have an invited guest and researcher, Gisela Arandia. Sunday, July 14 th (B, L) 9:00 am We are off for the provinces of Matanzas known for its AfroCuban culture and legacy is called the City of Bridges or the Athens of Cuba We stop at the Bacunayagua Bridge on way to Matanzas town. We will then visit the artist cooperative of Ediciones Vijia and have lunch. 2:00pm Matanzas. Afro Cuban Dance class and exchange with Cabildos in 4:00pm We end late afternoon for free time to swim, rest and enjoy dinner at the resort beach of Varadero, Matanzas. Return to Havana for rest. 2
Monday, July 15 th (B, L) 9:30am-1:30 pm Dance Classes with Company Members from Raices Workshop to be held at Raices Profundas Headquarters in Havana.. 3:00on Yoruba Association for an overview of Santeria in Cuba. Evening free to enjoy dinner and explore Havana on your own. Tuesday July 16 th (B, L) 9:30am-1:30pm Dance Classes with Company Members from Raices -5:00pm Exchange with the wonderful Muraleando Community Arts Development Project Dinner and Evening are free for local events (Casa de Musica). Friday July 19 th (B, L) 9:30am-1:30 pm Dance Classes with Company Members from Raices 1:00-3:30pm Cajon de Muerto. Celebration with Dance Instructors y Musicians! Susana s special cultural activitity!: perhaps a tambor or Dinner free to explore Havana on your own. We will make group reservation for you and provide some cultural options. Saturday July 20 th (B,L) 9:00am Enjoy the beauty of Tarara, for beach time or for personal exploration. 1:30pm and then return to Havana and time to change and refresh. 4
de la Rumba Optional Cultural activity: Enjoy El Gran Palenque-Sabado 7:00pm Dinner and Evening: Enjoy free time to shoot the streets of Havana, walk the Malecon, rest and enjoy local cultural activities on your own. Sunday July 21 st (B, D) 10:00am Excursion to the Regla Community. This morning we will take the Ferry to Regla. Explore the town including the dock area, the Church of the Black Virgin (La Virgen de Regla, or Yemaya). We will visit the Museum of Regla and the town square. 12:30pm own.
