Just a couple of notes for you: Proposed changes to the District 37L Constitution will appear in the next LInk. These changes need to be voted on at the 37L Convention in November. They are made in response to Lions International s mandating of the new position of Second Vice District Governor, and are strictly housekeeping measures. Clubs are reminded that District Hall of Fame nominations for approval at our Convention must be submitted very soon. Nomination forms are available from DG Roger: rkozma@shaw.ca. - Hank Hoekstra District Convention The 37L Convention will be held in Grande Prairie November 6 and 7, 2008. Please note we have been advised that there is extremely limited display space (8 tables) available on a first come, first served basis. Contact PDG Betty Ann Robson, robsonba@telus.net 780 354 2918. [ ] Once upon a time, we Baby Boomers wanted to make the world a better place. Today s children have the same dream, and as Lions, we re helping them make it come true. Our members are providing them with food, shelter, education, and healthcare. We re building bridges between cultures. And we re working to help younger generations pursue something that has eluded ours: the goal of world peace. www.lionsclubs.org/boomers WE R E T H E N E W G E N E R AT I O N O F WE R E T H E N E W G E N E R AT I O N O F L I O N S. Lions Peace Poster Contest Lions clubs sponsor the contest in a local school or organized youth group. The contest is open to students aged 11-13 on November 15, 2008. Participating students are asked to create posters visually depicting the contest theme, Peace Begins With Me. One winner for each contest sponsored by a club is chosen to advance to the district governor for judging. On the district level, one winner is selected to go on to the multiple district competition and from there one winner is forwarded to International Headquarters for the final judging. Entries are judged at all levels on originality, artistic merit and portrayal of theme. A Letter to the Lions of District 37L Dear Lions of District 37L: I m pleased to be have been asked by District Governor Roger to be the District 37L Twinning Chairperson for 2008-2009. Our District 37L and District 306A1 in Sri Lanka have had, for some years now, a most unique twinning project. That project is the District 306A1 District 37L Foster Child Program Through this program we re providing financial assistance to disadvantaged youths in District 306A1 that enables them to stay in school and thus have a brighter future. Due to the increasing generosity of Lions clubs and individual Lions in District L forty-one children in District 306A1 are now receiving this assistance and I want to sincerely thank you on their behalf for that wonderful support. The youths who receive assistance are selected by the District 306A1 Lions clubs and the funds donated by the Lions clubs and the individual Lions of District 37L are provided to these children via a trust fund now managed by District 306A1 Past District Governor Gordon Lester Aponso. For many years the trust officer was Past Council Chairperson Dayantha Fernando but due to ill health he has asked PDG Aponso to take over this responsibility. PDG Aponso has been working with PCC Fernando for the past four years and is familiar with the program. The trust fund is managed at no cost to the program. The number of youths who can be assisted is based entirely upon the funds available. For an annual donation of $150 your club can provide assistance to one youth for one year. However, all donations of any amount are gratefully appreciated and go into the trust account and are used to aid the youths who are accepted into the program. The clubs who make donations are not sent photos of the youths but I will be asking PDG Aponso to provide me with some photos of some of the youths. I have a list of the sixteen clubs and the number of children that each of those clubs currently have enrolled in the program I encourage all clubs in District L to support the District 306A1- District 37L Foster Child Program. This twinning program tangibly shows how much WE SERVE. Please make your donation payable to the District 306A1-District 37L Foster Child Program and mail your donation to District 37L Treasurer Lion Larry Armfelt at P.O. Box 2070, Athabasca, AB T9S 2B6. If you have any questions please contact me at Ldcgp@telusplanet.net or by phone to 780-532-3027.
