The Washington June 2017 Greater Seattle Chapter SDC Founded in 1969 Volume 47 Number 6 The President s STEERING COLUMN stayed around with Margaret and her darling doggy Lola for a little while afterwards and Rick ended up buying a big Studebaker sign from 1949. He plans to put a metal frame around it and hang it in the garage. Neat, huh?! Wow, really can t believe how fast this year is passing by! While we didn t have a formal meeting last month, there were lots of local events, the Oregon Overdrive and the International meet in South Bend. If you missed them all, there will be more events to attend during those lazy days of summer! On May 6 th, a small group of members went to Margaret Kaifer s house to work on Mark s 1951 Champion. By the time Rick and I got there, Odd and Don had the car running, thanks to a new battery and some minor adjustments. I am sure Margaret will let me know when she plans to sell it. Rick and I We are in for a treat this month! I am sure most of you saw the email earlier in May about the June 10 th meeting at Kenny and Kathy Durkee s house. They purchased a few of Walt s Studebakers over the past year or two and have a great collection of cars. There is the option of meeting with Studebakers (or other old autos) at Maple Valley Days earlier in the day, until approximately 1pm, then driving to Kenny and Kathy s for a potluck. They will be BBQ ing and ask that everyone attending bring a side dish or dessert to share. We will also have a meeting to discuss the South Bend International and any updates to the 2018 International meet. See you on the 10 th!, Laurel

The Washington President June 2017 Page 3 SECRATARY S SCRIBBLES As the secretary was not present at the May meeting, but went to South Bend instead, Mary was kind enough to provide this report with pictures from the meet. Thank you Mary (the editor) Bill Hallett and I went to the National Meet in South Bend May3-6. We had a good time, but the weather was cold and rainy the first day and a half. After that the sun came out, but there was a cold wind - perhaps the remnants of the tornado that passed south of Indianapolis? Originally we were going to register for both the SDC and ASC, but the SDC tout of Building 82 was sold out, as was the Proving Grounds, so we regmany outside vendors as usual, but some pretty nice parts were in the indoor booths. Friday afternoon we got front row seats outside the SDC Hotel where the parade of Studebakers ended. The Studebaker Band was playing the oldies, the sun was out, and it was really fun to see the cars and do some tirekicking. Since the Saturday Car Show invited all the local car clubs, there were Packistered with ASC only. The Fairgrounds were ards, Desotos, Corvairs, etc. mixed in amongst where the Swap Meet, Drive-thru judging, and the the Studebakers and Avantis. Saturday car show was held. There were not as The ASC had their tour through the countryside

The Washington President June 2017 Page 4 with a stop in Waterton. We toured a private collection, and ended up with a delicious banquet. I had fun talking to a couple of Australians and one "Kiwi", (how the New Zealanders refer to themselves) I got them all revved-up about the 2018 Meet. As we drove between the three Meet Hotels out to the Fairgrounds, (15 miles one way) we realized that South Bend is really thriving since we were there 5 years ago!. The Tech Companies that have moved there are revitalizing the area. Bill Schiffer would be so pleased! After the Meet, we went to the Gilmore Car Museum at Hickory Corners, MI. It was fabulous. If you ever get a chance to go there, you will not be disappointed. 400 vintage cars and the Blue Moon Diner, a working 1930's restaurant from the East Coast that was moved to the Museum, grounds. We left there, and spent a couple days sightseeing along Lake Michigan, where we saw lighthouses and little towns from the late 1800s. The weather in Michigan was very nice - 70 degrees. All in all a great time reconnecting with old friends we only see at the National Meets, and making new Studebaker friends. Mary West Resurrection of Margaret s 51 Champ
