Richard was an avid CMC member since high school. He climbed all the 14ers plus some 13,000ers and in May 1961 he reached the summit of Denali via the West Buttress route. As one of the first NPS Rangers and early climbers to summit Denali, he was assigned by Secretary of the Interior Walter Hickel to head up an Advisory Committee to protect federal lands in Alaska following statehood. In 1970 he urged NPS Director George Herzog to see what was at stake in Alaska. By 1974 Stenmark s knowledge was used by the Senate and House in developing legislation for proposed national interest lands. He was instrumental in the expansion of McKinley s boundaries to include the southern side and the glaciers radiating from the mountain as well as other mountains in the Alaska Range. Richard s knowledge and energy resulted in the newly expanded Alaska National Parks under ANILCA. President Carter signed it into law in 1980. He is survived by his wife Helen who is a CMC Western Slope Member.
