History of Muswell Hill Muswell Hill is an inner suburb of north London with a great history dating back to as early as the 12th Century. The name Muswell was established at the end of the 15th Century and derives from Old English words meaning mossy well. The traditional story tells that a Scottish king was cured of disease after drinking the water of the well. The area subsequently became a place of pilgrimage for healing during medieval times. In the 18th century Muswell Hill remained a scattered village consisting mainly of detached villas and arable land. It wasn t until the end of the 19th century that the area began to be developed and take on the form of the densely populated residential suburb that we see today. Today Muswell Hill is an established residential area with an attractive mix of substantial linked terraced family homes dating predominantly from the Victorian and Georgian periods, along side more contemporary properties from the 20th century. There is currently a significantly renewed interest from developers building in the area. Property in Muswell Hill Muswell Hill has a wide selection of properties to suit all types of buyers and tenants, with all kinds of budgets; from imposing double fronted Victorian and Edwardian houses to one and two bedroom flats, and everything in between. There are several new build schemes in the area currently under-going completion meaning Muswell Hill s popularity and appeal will widen to include an even greater audience and its popularity amongst residents will continue to grow. The prevailing architecture of the area is known as arts and crafts; look for decorative turrets, woodwork and windows along with the use of stained glass, in particular anything following a nature theme. Creative young people, families, first time buyers and city workers chose to live in this vibrant metropolitan area that offers fabulous views of the centre of London which is only five miles away. Main Postcodes N10 Much of the central N10 area is known as the royal avenues and includes names such as Princes Avenue, Kings Avenue and the likes, and have some of the largest and most desirable properties in the area. Many N10 buyers and tenants are looking for a central Muswell Hill location with easy access to the shops and restaurants of the Broadway; more still are looking to find properties in catchments for the excellent state schools in the area. N10 extends west towards Highgate and north towards Friern Barnet and the north circular and motorway network. Bus links to stations at Highgate, Hornsey and Finsbury Park provide access into the City and West End. N6 Much of Highgate is covered by our Muswell Hill office, our Hampstead office, or both. In fact numerous N6 clients have taken advantage of having not 1 but 2 offices working for them. N6 covers Highgate village, and areas south of Highgate tube towards Crouch End and Archway. N8 From the bottom of Muswell Hill, Park Road and Priory Road lead into Hornsey which is part of the N8 postcode. Many of the properties here are similar in style and size to those in N10 whilst there are additional, smaller types of properties in roads such as North View Road and South View Road. N11 Bordering both N22 and N10, N11 offers some more contemporary 1920s and 1930s properties attracting interest from young families wanting to be near to schools. N2 Spanning East Finchley and Hampstead Garden suburbs along with Fortis Green, N2 sits alongside neighbouring N10 and offers similar types of properties such as beautiful terraced Victorian houses and conversions, along with access into town from East Finchley tube. There are also several very popular mansions blocks and the Ringwood Estate which provides much larger family accommodation. N22 Whilst much of N22 is in nearby Wood Green, N22 7 is a hugely sought after triangle at the back of Alexandra Palace consisting of attractive Edwardian and Victoria houses and maisonettes. N22 also extends to parts of Bounds Green, which has seen some of the highest increases in property values in the area due to the more affordable price tag. Many of the N22 properties have the advantage of being walking distance to Alexandra Palace station or Bounds Green tube, which give access to the City and West End. There is the added opportunity of gaining entry to primary and secondary state schools at Rhodes Avenue and Alexandra Park School. From here there is access to stunning views of Alexandra Palace and Park.
