BOOK NOW FOR $500 AIR CREDIT COLUMBIA & SNAKE RIVERS HARVESTS, HISTORY & LANDSCAPES MAY 1 7, 2019 ABOARD NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC QUEST

To travel the lower reaches of the mighty Columbia and Snake Rivers takes us through some of the most extreme ecosystems found in the Pacific Northwest. From the damp, coastal temperate rain forest on the coasts of Washington and Oregon, to the dry, rolling hills and canyons of the interior. It is all intertwined, the geology, the natural and cultural histories. They are what makes this area unique, and we will help you understand it all. Cindy Manning, Expedition Leader

DEAR ALUMNI AND FRIENDS, When you see the Pacific Ocean from Cape Disappointment or the basalt cliffs of the Columbia River, you are taking in views shared by America s great explorers. These awe-inspiring views are part of your carefully designed voyage that follows the path of the Lewis and Clark expedition that rewrote the map of the American West. Aboard the new 50-cabin National Geographic Quest, you ll sail further into history as you transit the Columbia River Gorge. Traveling by ship allows you to see time layered in the riverbanks, where the Missoula Floods of 15,000 years ago carved much of the route you travel, and the landslides of 500 years ago altered the river s course by a full mile events the expedition s geologist will explain. In fact, the full expedition team, with their informative talks and engaging companionship, puts everything into context, weaving an ongoing narrative from each day s events. Even the ship s hotel staff contributes to your knowledge and appreciation of the region, as they introduce you to Oregon and Washington s flourishing food and wine scene. Enjoy complimentary tastings aboard provided by local vintners and brewers, along with delicious food grown in the rich soil of the region. You ll see some modern marvels of human engineering the imposing systems of locks and large-span bridges. Look forward to kayaking, cycling down some of the winding roads of the Pacific Northwest, and a visit to the Western Antique Aeroplane and Automobile Museum. From the unrivaled beauty of the Columbia River Gorge to the moody silhouette of Mount Hood, you ll find photo ops around every bend. Travel with awardwinning National Geographic photographer Michael Hanson, plus a Lindblad- National Geographic certified photo instructor, who will offer assistance, instructions, and shooting tips to ensure you go home with top photos. We hope you ll join us, May 1-7, 2019, on an expedition featuring the best of the region. To reserve your place, please return the enclosed reservation form or call 757-221-1165. Sincerely, Marilyn W. Midyette 75 Executive Director William & Mary Alumni Association SPECIAL AIRFARE SAVINGS Book now and receive a $500 air credit. Plus enjoy complimentary wine and beer tastings. RELIVING THE PAST, ILLUMINATING THE PRESENT The intrepid spirit of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark permeates this corner of the continental U.S. where they led the Corps of Discovery expedition. Traveling in their footsteps, you gain a deeper understanding of what they endured and The Maryhill Museum. the curiosity that spurred them on. Your itinerary includes stops that embrace that heritage of discovery. At the Western Antique Aeroplane & Automobile Museum (WAAAM), explore one of the largest collections of still-functioning antique cars and planes in the country. DISCOVER THE ANCIENT BEDROCK OF THE WEST From Hells Canyon, America s deepest, Columbia River Gorge at sunrise. river-cut canyon to Palouse Falls, which drops dramatically into a cavernous plunge pool, the geology of the Columbia River Gorge tells the story of a restless land forged through the eons by catastrophic volcanoes, Ice Age floods, and powerful landslides. Yet, today, you are able to enjoy its beauty peacefully aboard ship, employing kayaks and Zodiacs to explore its wild reaches up close. Around every bend of the Columbia and the Snake rivers, the region s unique natural history reveals itself in the layered rock walls and stacked lava flows of columnar basalt. These rivers also offer up another exhilarating marvel: eight locks which lift or lower the ship some 700 feet, nearly 10 times what the Panama Canal entails!
