We ll unwind and enjoy dinner together, savoring our dramatic change in longitude. Dinner and overnight, Portland. August 23 After a good breakfast in the hotel, we ll shuttle to the American Pride, preparing for embarkation. By the early afternoon, we ll be cruising
downstream in the wide Columbia destination Astoria. Overnight on the American Pride. August 24 We ll make a shore excursion to Astoria today. Those who wish can visit the Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, which includes a reproduction of Fort Clatsop, which sheltered the expedition in the winter of 1805-06. Overnight on the American Pride. August 25 We ll be sailing upstream today, entering the spectacular Columbia River Gorge. We ll make a port-of-call in Stevenson, Washington, where we ll visit the Columbia River Gorge Interpretive Center. Overnight on board the American Pride. August 26 We ll continue our ascent of the river today, passing one of America s highest waterfalls Multnomah Falls and in the shadow of towering Mt. Hood. We ll stop at The Dalles; a shore excursion will take us to the Fort Dalles Museum, showcasing the stories of early pioneers and traders passing The Dalles, and to the region s interpretive center. Overnight on board the American Pride.
August, 27 Enjoy a good breakfast on the American Pride this morning. Then we ll disembark, and transfer to a comfortable van. We ll discover some of Portland s famous livability with a driving tour and select stops: Pioneer Courthouse Square, the Waterfront Park, the Pearl District, and Nob Hill. We ll also be sure to visit the famous Powell s City of Books and the Portland Japanese Garden. In the mid-afternoon, we ll make the scenic drive up the slopes of Mt. Hood to the famous Timberline Lodge. Explore the history of the lodge, enjoy the amenities. Overnight, the Timberline Lodge. August 28 This morning, we ll drive along scenic highways to Bend, Oregon. Bend is described as one of America s most livable cities. East of the high Cascade Mountains, Bend famously soaks up the sun far more frequently than Portland and the more populous areas west of
the mountains. We ll explore the city and some of the beautiful natural areas that surround Bend. Overnight, Bend. August 29 scenic view in Smith Rock State Park Enjoy time to explore Bend s refurbished mill town (lumber mills, that is), now boasting re-purposed buildings that are a shopping emporium, office and living space. We ll also make an excursion to Smith Rock State Park one of the West s most scenic places. Overnight, Bend. August 30 We ll depart Bend this morning, driving through the arts town of Sisters, en route to the Willamette Valley. We ll take a look at Oregon s capital, Salem, and also stop at a distinguished winery in this famous grape-producing region. We ll spend our last night in Oregon near the Portland Airport. August 31 Today we ll fly back to the Carolinas.
