Doris & Rob Dougher Chapter Rider Educators http://re2.gwrra.org/ login_mem.php Rider Education Newsletter Continued from Last month 15. Mind the gap Remember Driver s Ed.? One second s worth of distance per 10 mph is the old rule of thumb. Better still, scan the next 12 seconds ahead for potential trouble. 16. Beware of tuner cars They re quick, and their drivers tend to be young and aggressive, therefore potentially hazardous. 17. Excessive entrance speed hurts It s the leading cause of single-bike accidents on twisty roads some cruisers can make unheard of amounts of power. Use it on the way out of a corner, not in. 18. Don t trust that deer whistle Ungulates and other feral beasts prowl at dawn and dusk, so heed those big yellow signs. If you re riding in a target-rich environment, slow down and watch the shoulders. 19. Learn to use both brakes The front does most of your stopping, but for a lot of heavy cruisers a little extra rear brake can really help haul you up fast. 20. Keep the front brake covered always Save a single second of reaction time at 60 mph and you can stop 88 feet shorter. Think about that. 21. Look where you want to go Use the miracle of target fixation to your advantage. The motorcycle goes where you look, so focus on the solution instead of the problem. 22. Keep your eyes moving Traffic is always shifting, so keep scanning for potential trouble. Don t lock your eyes on any one thing for too long unless you re actually dealing with trouble. 23. Come to a full stop at that next stop sign Put a foot down. Look again. Anything less forces a snap decision with no time to spot potential trouble. 24. Raise your gaze It s too late to do anything about the 20 feet immediately in front of your fender, so scan the road far enough ahead to see trouble and change trajectory. 25. Get your mind right in the driveway Most accidents happen during the first 15 minutes of a ride, below 40 mph, near an intersection or driveway. Yes, that could be your driveway. 26. Never dive into a gap in stalled traffic Cars may have stopped for a reason, and you may not be able to see why until it s too late to do anything about it. 27. Don t saddle up more than you can handle If you weigh 95 pounds, avoid that 795-pound cruiser. Get something lighter and more manageable. 28. Watch for car doors opening into traffic And smacking a car that s swerving around some goofball s open door is just as painful. Rob Dougher Rider Educator, Chapter I-2, Lavonia Ga. 2

Page 2 Dick and Gail Cross Assistant District Directors, NW PARTICIPATION participation noun pärˌtisəˈpāsh(ə)n/ The action of taking part or sharing in something When we first joined GWRRA and Chapter GA-B2 in Feb 2010, we found many extremely involved people. They were, for the great part, very pleasant, energetic and fun-loving. Always up for an activity at home or at another chapter/group or rally and always ready to ride. Ice cream seemed to be a big motivator. They were also very helpful to the rookies as well as to each other, regardless of the need. There were there! This was shared by all with whom we came in contact. Chapter Fun Days, district rallies and the national Wing Dings. We were all there to enjoy each other. The support of each chapter for each other chapter s Fun Days and plaque attacks not only offers great opportunity for rides across the great state of Georgia, but also helps to support each chapter. It also gives each chapter the opportunity to share in Rider Education, which is primary to a 501(c)(4) association, participate in other programs, and build fellowship among all chapter participants. So, how about we all get out there and participate!!! GA-L COUPLE OF THE YEAR 2016 Durwood & Miriam Mills Durwood and Miriam have been members of GWRRA since May of 2009. They celebrated their 52nd anniversary on March 30th 2017. The couple lives at Cloudland near the Alabama and Georgia state lines, and they enjoy riding the twisties in the area. They have two sons, Edward and Eric, and a daughter Michelle. They are blessed with seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Durwood has been riding most of his adult life. His first motorcycle was an old Ducati that was not titled, and he only rode it in the woods of North Carolina. Then he owned a 180 Yamaha, Honda, a 450 Scrambler, a 550 Honda, a 750 Shadow and finally, they bought their 2008 GL 1800 Gold Wing in November 2008. Miriam is Durwood s faithful corider.they have logged over 115,000 miles on their beautiful black and chrome GL 1800. Durwood and Miriam are active participants in the Levels Rider Ed Program. They have earned their Level IV Master Tour Rider/Co-Rider patches and are working toward achieving their Senior Master Tour Rider Patches in 2017. Both are active in Chapter L, and they also enjoy visiting other chapters. GWRRA Motto Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge

Page 3 Norman and Wendy Morton Membership Enhancement Coordinators Membership Enhancement One of the main purposes, if not the most important, of membership enhancement is to encourage and lead the GWRRA organization members in FUN activities. If we are not having fun and enjoying ourselves, we will not attract new members or retain our existing members. I have heard that we need to do more to encourage more fun so I am asking each member to give ideas to your chapter membership enhancement coordinator what you think will increase enjoyment at chapter gatherings and GWRRA functions. One thing we all have in common is the riding of our motorcycles. We also like to have FUN. Let s endeavor to find ways to have more fun with your chapter and visit and support other chapters activities such as fun days, poker runs, dinner rides, mountain rides and plaque attacks. Here s to seeing everyone at events and having FUN. Norm and Wendy. Frank & Melinda Brothers District Rider Educators, MEDIC Coordinators We had a great time in Dalton. Our Rider Ed. classes went well. We had 14 members renew their First Aid CPR Certification. We filled the room holding the Co-Rider Class with 27 members, we had 16 members in the Motorist Awareness class. We thank everyone who came out and supported Rider Ed. Without your support we could not exist. As we close out the 2017 Rally we start making plans for the 2018 Rally. We have had a great time in Dalton, Georgia, but the time has come too move to a new location I am very excited about the new location! The Georgia Baptist Conference Center has a lot to offer. We hope you start making your plans to come have the time of your life at the 2018 Rally. Keep on the lookout for new things to happen at the 2018 Rally. Till next time RIDE SAFE Frank & Melinda GWRRA Motto Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge

Page 4 Bob and Karla Greer District Motorist Awareness Coordinators WOW! WHAT A RALLY! Wow! What a great rally. If you were there, you know what we are talking about. If you weren t there, you should go ahead and register for the Georgia District Rally next year. We are heading to Toccoa, GA with a rally theme of, Salute To Our Military. If you thought the North Georgia Mountain Riding was great this year, you will love the Mountain Riding next year. The 2018 GA Rally & registration flyer is already on the GA District Web Page. Please register early because this GA Baptist Conference Center only has 200 rooms and they will be filled fast with the package deal being offered that includes your room for 3 nights and meals. Now, what happened at this year s rally with regard to Motorist Awareness? We held a seminar on the New & Improved Motorist Awareness. We had a round robin discussion along with lots of questions & answers during that time to learn more about Motorist Awareness and how Georgia Chapters can help make the roads safer for all motorcycles by simply talking to others about motorcycles and our presence on the roads. We have a goal to have a Chapter Motorist Awareness Coordinator in all Georgia Chapters. Yep, every single Chapter in Georgia. Even those Chapters that only have 10 or so active participants. Even those smaller Chapters talk to people about motorcycles. That is all Motorist Awareness is, GWRRA members talking to non -GWRRA members about motorcycles. Almost every time we go for a ride, someone starts looking at and talking to us about our motorcycles. When you interact with others, this is Motorist Awareness and you are making the roadways safer for all motorcycle riders. How Is A Chapter Motorist Awareness Coordinator Appointed? Very simple. The Chapter Director appoints the Ch MA Coordinator and then lets us know the contact information for that person. Then we will start keeping that Ch MA Coordinator informed about all the MA stuff happening in GA, Region A and GWRRA. If the CD or the prospective Ch MA Coordinator have any questions about the appointment or the position, please give us a call or send us an e- mail and we will be glad to answer any questions you have..gwrra wants to know what type of Motorist Awareness activity is going on. The way Georgia does this is to have the Chapters, because they know who and what type of MA Activity they have done each month, send us, GA Dist. MA Coordinators, an e-mail. Nothing formal or formatted, just a short e-mail to let us know what you did during the previous month. We need an e-mail from every Chapter. So, there is another reason why all Chapters need a Chapter MA Coordinator, so the Chapter Director doesn t have to do it. Here is the way it works. Please don t yell at the messenger. ) So, if you had anyone in your Chapter that contributed to the safety of motorcycle riders in any of the above 14 ways, that information needs to be include in your monthly Chapter MA e-mails to us. Because, we review all the Chapters monthly MA Reports at the end of each calendar year and submit Georgia s list of MA Gold Award winners to National. National will send us the MA Gold Awards and we will make award presentations to the winners. MA Gold Awards will be given to all those, not just MA Coordinators, that excel in the area of Motorist Awareness. These award winners will need to do presentations and set up or be a part of MAP exhibits to groups to be a part of this prestigious award program. Since, the guidelines to this MA Gold Award has just been published and the MA Gold Award goes from January 1 st December 31 st each year, we will need to know if your Chapter had anyone that contributed to the safety of motorcycle riders in any of the above 14 ways (qualifiers for the annual MA Gold Award) from January 1 st, 2017 to the present. That way we can make sure all that everybody has done in 2017 will be considered. Page 5 Please keep in mind that: Chapter MA Monthly E-mails should contain ALL Motorist Awareness activity. Anytime a Chapter member talks to someone outside GWRRA about motorcycles. GWRRA Motorist Awareness Gold Award will be awarded to any GWRRA member who qualifies by completing at least 5 out of the above 14 qualifying criteria. This will be primarily presentations and/or Motorist Awareness Program (MAP) displays. We need to know the specifics about these to ensure they are counted toward this annual MA Gold Award. In closing, we hope you make your 2018 GA District Rally reservations early and come help us salute our military.
