Chapter PA P February, 2007 Page 2 of 8 Kick Start By Mark Forbes Chapter Director Hello to all! Well, the holidays are long over for another year. Now that the New Year has begun, it is time to get down to the business of taking on this new year s rides and events. Your staff and I will do our best to schedule rides and events for the Chapter to enjoy. As you all have heard before, THIS IS YOUR CHAPTER. The Staff and I would appreciate all the help and cooperation we can get. If you have anything that you would like to do and you think the Chapter would enjoy, please let us know. We will take all ideas into consideration. Also, if there is something you are not happy about, please let us know. We cannot change anything if we do not know about it. All Chapter P members are welcome to come and join the Staff as we set up the 2007 Ride Schedule. We will be meeting at the Church Brew Works (3525 Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15201; 412-688-8200) on Thursday, March 8, at 6:30pm. Let us continue to be a successful Chapter. Help us to bring in new members and bring back those that we have not seen in awhile. There are a few positions we need to fill also. We need a Ride Co-Coordinator and a few Road Captains. If anyone is interested, please call us or see us after the meeting. Dress for the Fall not the Ride. Mark Rider Education By Andy Lucas Chapter Educator Motorcycle & Auto Driving System This time of year is a good time to re-enforce some good riding techniques. A good topic to pick would be something that could be used when driving your car, such as the technique of SEE (See, Evaluate and Execute). Compare the action of the motorcycle versus four-wheel vehicles. You can practice the head checks when changing lanes and be sure to use that turn signal. The driving technique of four wheels verses riding a motorcycle is similar, although there are more actions when riding a motorcycle. If we practice the SEE process in a four-wheeler, then perhaps the process will be there when you ride your motorcycle. Bad habits are hard to break but developing good habits are the ones you do not want to loose. Think Spring Some of us can start our thoughts about getting out on the road again. Some will do it a little sooner than others. Those of us in the Arctic cold air will have to go with the electric suits to keep us warm even without the motorcycle. A little furry animal called Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow which means we will have an early Spring. He is the ultimate in weather forecasting. Probably closer to being right than the weather channel. He is a small rodent that brings three national television networks and thousands of folks out early on a very cold morning to see if he can see his shadow. That will determine if there will be six more weeks of Winter. I cannot see how he could miss it three networks of lights and thousands of flashes from cameras. Now, Phil has a cousin in Ohio, Buckeye Chuck. I am sure there are a few other cousins out there. Miller s Mentionables By Marty Miller Assistant Chapter Director Well, it sure has been cold. Karen and I ventured up to Chapter D s meeting in January. We had a great time. On February 4, we attended Chapter E s Gathering at the Holiday Inn in Belle Vernon. Renee and Tom were there from District promoting the events at this year s Lancaster Rally. There will be a pink-slip derby and a sweet-treat bakeoff along with the dance

Chapter PA P February, 2007 Page 3 of 8 competition. They plan to attend our Gathering with more details. Ed and Carol Horne joined us at the Staff Meeting at a very cold Penn Brewery. They were only in town for a little while and they thought they would come see what s going on. As for the Winter Picnic, I sent out an email asking Chapter members to let me know if they plan to attend so that we know how much food to buy. You need to bring your own cups and silverware along with your choice of drink. The Chapter will supply the soup and the hot dogs. Please let us know by calling my house or emailing me. We need ideas for the 2007 Ride Schedule. Please come to the staff meeting or email us so we can get your favorite ride scheduled. We will also be planning our dinner rides and ice cream rides. SO, WHERE IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO RIDE? I have added a link to the SUPPORT OUR TROOPS page called the Vietnam Era. This site has many of your favorite songs from the era. Feel free to go there and listen to some songs that you haven t heard for a while. On Sunday, we went to Chapter U s meeting in Delmont. There, we met Brian and Erin, the Chapter Directors. They have a bike night one Wednesday each month starting in May and going through the Summer. See the flyer on our flyer page for more details. The Traveling COY By Bob & Jayne Minsterman 2006-2007 Chapter Couple On Thursday, January 25, Bob & I attended Chapter D s Gathering at Domenico s Ristorante in Cranberry Township. We were not the only Chapter P members in attendance Mark & Carol Forbes, Marty & Karen Miller, Chuck & Grace Jack and Andy Lucas were also there. It s too bad that Chapter D didn t have the Traveling Plaque. Chapter D had quite a turn out on this cold, snowy night. They filled the back room at Domenico s. Chapter Director Deb Rice did a fine job of informing her membership of upcoming events. When she mentioned the Bowling Challenge, our group taunted Chapter D so we better have a lot of Chapter participation and beat the chaps off of them. Andy Lucas spoke to Chapter D about volunteering for the Vintage Grand Prix and Chuck Jack spoke to them about participating in the Mall Show. Grace & Chuck Jack won the 50/50 and Marty & Karen Miller won free 50/50 tickets for Chapter D s next Gathering (which is in March). Flying Old Glory Correctly By Larry Kolling, GWRRA #169087, Illinois District Chapter O Now that riding season is here. You ll find many garments and riding accessories that use reflective or retroreflective materials to increase night visibility most parts of the United States and most motorcycles have Old Glory and other flags on their bikes, if we fly Old Glory, let's fly her correctly. The US flag should always be on the bike's right-hand side (and, therefore, the Rider's and Co-Rider's right-hand side as they sit on the bike). Any other flag should be on the bike's (and, also, Rider's and Co-Rider's) left-hand side. When there are more than two flags - for example, a number of flags of States or localities or pennants of societies - grouped and displayed from staffs, then the flag of the United States of America should be at the center of the group and at the highest point of the group. Did You Know By Mark Forbes Chapter Director The following is a New Motorist Law that took effect on January 29, 2007. All motorists MUST turn on their headlights whenever they use their windshield wipers in inclement weather. This new law applies when wipers are fully on or in intermittent mode. Violators will be fined $25 but fees/other costs will increase the amount to $100! Also, motorists will suffer substantial penalties if snow or ice on their vehicle injures or kills someone. This is the first winter this law will be on the books. Spread this information to all PA drivers that you know. Don t get a ticket because you were not knowledgeable about this new law. Lessons in Life By Regina Britt The Plain Dealer, Cleveland, Ohio To celebrate growing older, Regina Britt wrote 50 Lessons in Life that she had been taught. Here are a few of them. Watch for the rest of them in upcoming newsletters. 1. Life isn t fair, but it is still good. 2. When in doubt, just take the next small step. 3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. 4. Don t take yourself too seriously. No one else does. 5. Pay off your credit cards every month. 6. You don t have to win every argument. Agree to disagree. 7. Cry with someone. It s more healing than crying alone. 8. It s okay to get angry with God. He can take it. 9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck.
