Our snowbird members are making their way to warmer weather while the rest of us must think about storing and winterizing our bikes. Not a happy time - but I DO have some good news! Our Ride Planning meeting for the 2016 riding season will be coming up on November 14 th. This is a great time for group therapy as we happily consider all the possibilities for next year. Come and join us at our usual meeting site, Immanuel Lutheran Church in Elmhurst, at 1pm to review our social and riding calendar and share your ideas for great rides. Chapter IL-Z2 Jim and Barb Kopchok Chapter Directors Due to setting our calendar early, this past year we had some ride conflicts with other popular area rides and events. We ll try to avoid that as much as possible this year, so we can still participate in events such as the Ride for Kids, Freedom Run, GWRRA District events and more. Of course, we expect to see you at our regular November Chapter Meeting on November 8 th. Speaking of GWRRA, our Illinois District Winter Warmup is coming up on January 22-23, 2016, at the President Abraham Lincoln Hotel, Springfield, IL. Looking for a weekend getaway with friends? Here is a fun opportunity. Next year s District Rally will be close by in Pontiac, IL on July 22-23, so keep on the lookout for more information. A link is already in place on our website that will keep you up to date. And the Region E Summer Rally (our Region) has been combined with the Missouri District Rally. This was an effort by our Region officers to recognize that time and expense to participate in these events can mount, and by minimizing both of these resources they hope to have better participation and attendance. The Missouri Rally will be in Branson, MO. Many of us rode through Branson a little over a year ago on our Ozark Mountain ride in Harrison, AR. Since we know the area and the route, maybe we d like to have a Chapter ride to this event? Wing Ding is Aug 31-Sep 3 in Billings, MT. Mary Adams, Illinois District Director, has been trying to coordinate a ride out to Billings from Illinois. If you are interested, let me know and look for more info here or directly from the Illinois District. Doug Koglin is working on the holiday party that we are planning for January, 2016. We hope to get good participation after all the other holiday parties are over and everyone is looking for some fun in the winter. If we can get more than 40 people to commit ahead of time, Doug has some good ideas on a fun event. We are working on extending our invitations to bring us over that number, but your feedback would be appreciated, either through email or at our Chapter meeting. Page 2 Chapter Meeting Location (Continued from Page 1) November 2015 Chapter IL-Z2 News So let s get in whatever riding is left this season and close out the year on a safe note. One of our objectives will be to educate everyone on the various Levels Programs that are available via GWRRA and to promote everyone s participation. Expect to hear more from Dennis Murphy, myself, and others on this in the weeks and months ahead. Part of the Levels Program is the training we get through GWRRA for Medic/First Aid, Ride Planning, Group Riding and more. We conducted those last year and look forward to refreshing it again soon. Also, the Accelerated Rider Course and Experienced Rider Course are both needed to move through the levels. I am working to make sure we have information on these courses to help us as riders and also for the needed credentials for the Levels program. So there is plenty to do, even if we aren t on the bikes. We ve all heard about the SAD syndrome (Seasonal Affective Disorder) and it really describes how we all start to feel about now, and it has nothing to do with the sun! J Let your Chapter Z2 family cheer you up and meet us at our meetings, dinner and other events. GWRRA Chapter IL-Z2 Meetings: Denny s Rest. 17 W 660 22nd Street Oakbrook Terrace, IL When: Second Sunday of every month. Breakfast at 8:00 AM, Meeting at 9:00 AM. Ride after the meeting!! (weather permitting) Additional updated information at www.ilz2.com BREAKFAST CLUB Ride Safe! Jim & Barb Kopchok Chapter Director Can you keep a secret? Well, DON'T! Please help me spread the news! Wing Ding in Billings, Montana could be the largest Wing Ding ever! As of this week, our registrations already received are the second highest ever! We have added more rooms at discounted rates as well. The old saying is "The more the merrier." This is really true at Wing Ding. We will all have the opportunity to see even more of our friends and extended family from around the country There will be more surprises and special activities centered around having FUN with our Members. The daily and the final cash drawing will all be huge too. Are you free on Wednesday mornings? Come and join our Breakfast Club it meets every Wednesday at 9am at the Sunmist Restaurant & Café located at 501 E. Lake Street in Addison. Weather permitting we will schedule an ABR (after breakfast ride.) So please let everyone know they need to get signed up right away so that they will not miss out on all the FUN in Billings. When you plan your trip to this scenic part of the country, be sure and leave enough time so that you can travel through Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Wolf Creek Pass and many more. It has been said that many of these nearby destinations are among the most popular motorcycle and trike trips in the U.S. You will be surrounded by the grandeur of these incredible sights in all directions. Sandi and I are so excited about this news and want to thank each of you that have already registered. If you haven't had a chance to do so, here is the link, http://wing-ding.org/ attend.html. It only takes about 3 minutes to set up a vacation of a lifetime! We look forward to seeing you all at Billings! Volume 18 Issue 11 Page 4 Ride Coordinator After our October chapter meeting, a group of us headed out to Silver Springs State Park for our annual local color ride. The weather definitely cooperated and it turned out to be a spectacular day. Although there was a little more color in the trees than our color ride to Galena, we still weren't quite at the peak of the fall colors. After the ride and spending some time at the Park, we headed into Sandwich, IL for a late lunch. Our lunch stop was at the Bull Moose Bar & Grill which provided a historic setting for lunch. The Bull Moose incorporated a 1893 Pullman Palace Dining car into the restaurant. This actual dining car was used by President Roosevelt in his 1912 political campaign. It was a cool dining experience as well as a very popular place as we saw from the long line of people waiting to get in. We only have one more ride planned for this year, which is the Frost you Buns ride. After our November meeting. We ll be heading north to the Broken Oar in Port Barrington for lunch. Anyone not wanting to ride, but still wanting to join us for the ride, can do so in their cars as long as you drive with your windows open and your air conditioning on full blast. Also, as always, you should be wearing a helmet for your safety. Don t forget our annual planning meeting on November 14th. We ll be working on the ride calendar for next year, so if you have any suggestions for rides or ride destinations that you would like us to consider, come to the meeting, or if you can t make the meeting, make sure you get your suggestions to us. Don Shore Z2 Ride Coordinator

Page 5 November 2015 Chapter IL-Z2 News Please join the Region E Team for the GWRRA Region E Couple and Individual of the Year Selection and Recognition. In an effort to better support the District Rallies in Region E the Region Team is trying a new approach that will hopefully lower the cost to our members by eliminating the Region E Rally and joining with a host District for the Couple of the Year/Individual of the Year Selection Process. We believe by eliminating our Region E Rally we will save you, the member, travel time, hotel expense, meal expense and money for region gift baskets, etc. Yes, it will add an extra day to one District Rally a year but will allow individuals that have commented they have to choose between a District and Region Rally the ability to do both. For 2016, the Missouri District will serve as the host District (see reasoning below). If this trial is successful, hosting the COY/IOY Selection will be available to other Districts in the future. Date: Thursday, June 2, 2016 Time: Closed Interviews for Couple/Individual of the Year are tentatively scheduled for 1 to 4 pm with the Open Selection Process tentatively scheduled from 6 to 8 pm Location: Prior to the Missouri District Rally in Branson, MO In addition to the 2016 Region E Couple and Individual of the Year Selection, the following Region E Recognitions and Announcements will be made.. Chapter Membership Enhancement Coordinator of the Year District Membership Enhancement Coordinator of the Year Chapter of the Year Chapter Newsletter of the Year Why are we combining the Region E COY/IOY Selection Process with a District Rally? There are several questions that have come up as the Region Team, District Directors and I have discussed and thought through the best way to serve the majority of the members of GWRRA. Some of the questions and responses are listed below. What is the purpose of the Region Rally? Though many other activities have been added to the agenda of the Region Rally, historically, the purpose of the Region Rally is to hold the Couple and Individual of the Year Selection. Why are we not having a Region Rally? Over the past several years many Districts and Regions have seen a decline in the number of rally attendees. By holding the Selection Process at a District Rally it will help boost the number of attendees at that rally by the added attendance of the couples, individuals, judges and those wishing to support their District s COY/IOY. Many members have noted that they have a limited amount of vacation time as well as limited dollars requiring a choice between personal vacations, District Rallies, Region Rallies and Wing Ding. Hopefully by combining the Region Rally with a District Rally their vacation time and dollars will go further. Please remember, this is a trial. A decision will be made after the 2016 Region Selection as to what our approach will be in 2017. What will happen to the Region Couple/Individual Selection? Where Region Rallies are no longer held, the Couple/Individual of the Year Section has been successfully held in conjunction with District Rallies. This is not a first time trial of this process. It is just new for Region E. How will the Region raise money if there is no Rally? Alternative ways are being explored such as grants, a Region raffle and corporate donations. Why was the Missouri District Rally site chosen? The Missouri District Rally is one of the largest in Region E. Historically, many of the Missouri District Rally attendees arrive midday on Thursday. Missouri District Rally can accommodate a Thursday Selection Process schedule. Lodging is readily available at a very reasonable cost. Facilities to hold the Selection are available. If a Region Rally is not being held, why do we need a Region Team? The Region Rally is just a small part of what the Region Team does. The Region Team, like all GWRRA Officers, are passionate volunteers. They are here to serve the members by providing training, programs and guidance for the Districts and ultimately the members with services such as Region Leadership Education Region Medic First Aid Region Membership Enhancement Region Motorist Awareness Region Newsletter Region Patch Shop Region Rider Education Region Website We hope you will support the efforts of Region E as we try this alternative approach to meeting the members needs. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. It s not the destination, it s the journey. Bruce S. Watkins

Volume 18 Issue 11 Page 7 Chapter Educator Slippery When Wet We all have seen these words. They are posted in stores when their floors are wet or someone spills something. We usually obey the sign and avoid the area. No one wants to slip and fall in the store, office and or public walkway. There is a very good chance that you will slip and fall if you do not follow the warning. Besides the fact of public humiliation, you could hurt or break something. And that is a good reason to pay attention to the warning. The next time you see the signs you will know the right action to take. But do we always do the right thing? At this time of the year there are a few new dangers on the road. I know we have all ridden through rain storms and we handled them well because we know when it rains what to do. You handle your bike differently in the rain then you would on a sunny dry day. No signs needed, you just know what to do because of the condition. In the Fall we all know that riding conditions change. First the temperature changes. You could have frost in the morning and warm sunny afternoons, cool and damp evenings. Again the conditions change and you adjust, your riding habits change too. Now let us talk about the other dangers out there on the road. The Fall is a great time to ride. It is not too hot like in the summer or too cold like in the winter. The Fall colors are the biggest reason to get out and ride. This only happens once a year and these are all warning signs of dangers. Are you paying attention to these signs or not. I would say most of us don t think that there is any danger out there, but there is. Frost in the morning can be a sign of black ice. When the frost on the ground turns into water it makes the road slippery until the sun burns it dry. (Please be careful on strips on the cross walks or rail road crossings, there is no traction at all.) During the Fall the wild animals come out of the woods. You will see a lot more deer along the road sides. They will jump out in front of you. Rabbits, raccoons, rats, and snakes will all come out of the woods. Let s talk about the pretty things. The leaves in the fall have many colors, shapes and sizes. That is one of the best reasons to take a ride in the Fall. It is a great way to spend time riding but that brings me back to the beginning of this article. Slippery when wet. When you are riding, watch out for leaves. Do not ride into piles or go through the leave. They are a big reason for accidents in the Fall. There is no traction or friction for stopping and turning. Leaves can and are slippery when wet. You don t know until it is too late. Enjoy the season and ride safe. Dennis Murphy Chapter Educator

Volume 18 Issue 11 Page 10 Communications Options for our Chapter We now have several different ways to communicate within our Chapter. It s always a challenge to keep everyone informed and up-to-date as we all have busy schedules, travel, can t always make the meetings, and so on. The Chapter Newsletter remains a staple for our monthly written document. It is typically mailed out several days before our scheduled meeting, and almost immediately is also available for download via our website. Unfortunately, the newsletter needs to be written a week or more before the meeting in order to allow time for production and printing, and so things may change or need to be updated. Hard copy versions of the newsletter are available to anyone who needs one, just let us know. The meeting itself is important way for us to share information not to mention a lot more fun, but again, not everyone can always make the meeting and may still want to engage with us in our rides and other activities. Our website (www.ilz2.com) is probably the central means for everyone to stay abreast of the latest information. Articles from our newsletter are published in the Chapter IL-Z2 News & Articles section. You can search/view these without the need to open the entire newsletter. Further, you can subscribe to these articles by following three easy steps, shown below. Whenever an article is added or modified you will be sent an email notification. You can always unsubscribe. Newsletters are available for download, links to helpful sites, our updated Ride/Event Calendar and more. STEP! Click on menu for Chapter IL-Z2 News and Articles STEP 2 Enter your email address (e.g. myname@gmail.com) Continued on Page 12

Page 11 November 2015 Chapter IL-Z2 News STEP 3 Confirm your email (Continued from Page 11) STEP 4 Receive Confirmation in your email Another method is to use Facebook. Many people do not use or like Facebook but we have almost 35 members of the GWRRA IL-Z2 Facebook group. This group is private and if you choose to join, Tony will approve your full participation. You can then see posts and some active communication chats between members, questions being answered and some impromptu rides or other being established. I personally wasn t a big Facebook fan until I saw how valuable this is. For example, at our recent dinner, due to some cancellations, Doug found we had some extra room. He put this on Facebook so any last minute dinner goers or their guests would feel welcome and it worked! Another Facebook option is the new Facebook page (not the same as the group) that was recently created. This is more for publishing information about our Chapter and what is going on so that we might be able to connect with non-members and encourage new participation.
