WCC Photonews Worcestershire Camera Club 03 JULY 2017 Editor: w-news@worcscc.uk Header: Guillemot hell 2 by Les Bailey From the Chairman Eric has two important notices to share this week WCC at the Worcester Show Our club has secured an exhibition space at the Worcester Show to be held on Sunday 13 August 2017 at Gheluvelt Park. We ll be in the Craft Marquee by the photograph competition entries and this is a wonderful opportunity to meet prospective new members for our club. The Show runs from 10:00 to 17:00 and it d be good to have 2 of our members in the marquee at all times to talk to people and describe the benefits of joining WCC. So this is a call for volunteers Contents Worcester Show Beginners and Improvers Diplomas Farne Islands Congratulations! More congratulations! Diary Diary (cont) Competitions & exhibitions Flipboard And finally to man the stand for an hour or so at the Show. Paul Mann, as exhibition secretary, has volunteered to manage the event and will arrange the display stands and prints. But we re looking for another 12 or more volunteers to help out during the day. If you can help for an hour or so, please contact Paul on 01386 793995 or paulat10@aol.com. Beginners and Improvers Group From the results of the 2016-17 membership survey, we saw that there was a call for R Bourne Diplomas more tuition and help at the beginners and improvers level. I have given this some Don t forget to add to your Diploma thought and would like to find out who would be interested in such a programme. I view portfolio! Contact your assigned assessor(s) this programme as a entry into our Diploma scheme and it will not obviate the need for for support when you wish. the established mentoring scheme. I would like to thank Gill Haynes for suggesting a 20 week programme framework that covers the basics of photography and leads to more advanced subjects such as composition, using flash and post-processing. The framework will follow the 20 stages in the DK book Digital Photography: Complete Course (ISBN: 978-0-2411-8609-1). So, this is a call for members to register their interest in joining such a group. Please contact me at chair@worcscc.uk or 01905 360945 for further information. I d also be interested in your views regarding the meeting frequency of such a group (weekly, fortnightly, monthly) and when / where the group could meet. Eric Williams CPAGB 1

From your Farne Islands correspondent Les Bailey writes with some very helpful information if you fancy a trip there. See also this week s header image. Just a few from our trip (with my leader) to The Farne Islands. The birds will be there until end July or thereabouts, so still time to go. Needs at least two nights, it s a fair drive, maybe 6 hours with stops and traffic. We took a boat out with Billy Shields; excellent value at 35 each. Leave Seahouses at 09:30, tour round a bit, 2.5 hours on Staple, which I think is the best, then sail over to Inner Farne for another 2.5 hours before the short trip back to Seahouses at about 16:00. No facilities on Staple though, no bushes either Shots here show European Shag, Guillemot, Razorbill, Arctic Tern, Kittiwake, Eider and naturally a few Puffin. You ll notice in one that there s a Black Headed Gull; they wait for the Puffins to come in, then snatch the sand eels. Puffins get to know, and go round again and crash land near their burrow - hopefully avoiding the gulls. The Arctic Terns are on Inner Farne, and whilst they don t really attack, it feels that way. They re pretty accurate with poop as well Puffin 5a; Arctic tern attack; Eider with chicks 2
