Chairman of the first Republican National Convention, 1856, he was a strong supporter of Lincoln and the Union. 2

54,1963.1 Major General Lew Wallace 1827 1905, on Wallace Ave at east end of Pike St. interruption for General Lew Wallace Study and Museum. As Indiana s adjutant general he organized the state for war. He saw action at Ft. Donelson, Shiloh and Monocacy. Later served as governor of New Mexico Territory and minister to Turkey. Author of Ben Hur. 3

54.1965.1 Yount s Mill 1849 was on highway 32 west of Crawfordsville just west of bridge over Sugar Creek on south side of road. It was hit by traffic so often the highway department removed and stored it, returned to owners of 2016 who re erected it on private land out of sight of the highway. It was leaning on the Mill end away from Sugar Creek 15 Mar 2016. Here Daniel Yount converted his carding mill into a woolen mill in 1849. For five decades it was a leading industrial activity in Montgomery County and during the Civil War sold grade A wool to the national government. It ultimately was a steam mill finally closing when problems of wool supply and transportation forced abandonment of the enterprise. 4

54.1993.1 Darlington Covered Bridge has twice been hit by traffic and is damaged. The base will no longer receive the top. As of 16 Mar 2016 it is in the Darlington Toll House. Local donations helped build this important transportation link. Completed 1868; closed to vehicular traffic, 1976. Listed in National Register of Historic Places, 1990. Approximately 166 feet long; Howe Truss design; built of oak and poplar with limestone abutments. Construction superintendent, Richard M. Epperson; builder, Joseph Kress. 54.1981.1 Chief Cornstalk s Village on west side of highway 231 at Parkersburg, 1150 S Ladoga. Chief Peter Cornstalk s Village of Snakefish (Eel River) tribe of Miami Indians was located three miles from here along Cornstalk Creek. Wigwams and Indiana burial ground were near Little Harshbarger family cemetery. The Indiana lived at peace with settlers moving here in the 1880s. 5

54.1995.1 Speed Cabin across from 311 N Grant St, Crawfordsville IN Site of house reputed to be a stop on the "Underground Railroad." Reconstructed cabin, which was portion of house owned by John Allen Speed, now located on grounds of Lane Mansion. Speed, active in abolitionist movement, was Mayor of Crawfordsville, 1868 1869. 6

54.2000.1 Montgomery County Rotary Jail at 225 N Washington St., Crawfordsville IN This jail and sheriff s residence built 1882. First rotary jail built in U. S. constructed to plans based on patented design of William H. Brown and Benjamin F. Haugh of Indianapolis. In use until 1973. Opened as museum and restoration begun 1975. Listed in National Register of Historic Places 1975. Continued on other side Circular cell block has sixteen wedge shaped cells on a two story turntable around a central shaft. Design promised better prisoner security and jailer safety. Cell block immobilized 1930 s as hazard to prisoner security and jailer safety. County jails first established in 1792 under laws of Northwest Territory: continued under laws of Indiana Territory and state constitutions of 1816 and 1851. 7

54 2002 1 William Bratton Lewis and Clark Expedition Member on IN 25 where it joins US 136 in Old Pioneer Cemetery Waynetown IN. As of 26 March 2016.has been knocked down. (Obverse): Bratton (1779 1841) is buried in this cemetery. With U.S. Army rank of private, he joined Lewis and Clark Expedition's Corps of Discovery near Clarksville, Indiana 1803. Corps explored lands of Louisiana Purchase and Pacific Northwest. (Reverse): Bratton's duties included hunter, blacksmith, saltmaker. He completed entire journey; discharged October 10, 1806. Settled on farm in Wayne Township 1822; held various county and township offices, including Justice of the Peace. 8

54.2009.1 Crawfordsville (Indiana) Carnegie Library now Carnegie Museum of Montgomery County, 222 S Washington St. North east corner of Washington St, (US 231, IN 32, IN 47) and Wabash Ave. Side one In 1897, the Current Events Club, like many women s clubs during this era, helped organize city s public library. Andrew Carnegie donated $25,000 in 1901 for library building construction; city provided land and annual funding. Local architect W. F. Sharpe designed this Renaissance Revival building. Side two This was first Carnegie Library opened in Indiana, dedicated July 29, 1902 with 4,500 volumes. Library moved 2005, building opened as Carnegie.. 9
