1 Summary This summary provides the number of manufacturing establishments and the value of shipments by product from establishments with four or more employees, by product category and by prefecture, out of the results of "the Census of Manufacture 2009" carried out as of December 31, 2009. 1. The number of manufacturing establishments In terms of the number of manufacturing establishments by product, the largest number was counted by "Planograph (offset) printing," followed by "Miscellaneous fabricated plate and sheet metal products," "Miscellaneous processed foods," "Fresh concrete," "Miscellaneous fabricated construction-use metal products," "Japanese-style pastries and cakes," "Fittings, except metal fittings," "Miscellaneous seafood products," "Plastic products for automobiles," and "Stamped and pressed machinery parts, without machine finishing." Metal products and food-related products are at the top of the list. By prefecture, many establishments which engage in "Planograph (offset) printing" are located in Tokyo, Osaka and Aichi; these three prefectures account altogether for over 30% of the total number of such establishments. Many establishments engaged in "Miscellaneous fabricated plate and sheet metal products" are located in Osaka, Aichi and Kanagawa; these three prefectures account altogether for over 30% of the total of such establishments. 2. Value of product shipments In terms of product shipments by product, the top was "Medical products preparations, including preparations outside medicines," which was in the fourth place in the previous year. Following this were products related to automobiles, such as "Ordinary passenger cars, 2000 ml cylinder capacity or more, including chassis" (hereinafter referred to as "Ordinary passenger cars"), "Miscellaneous parts of motor vehicles, including parts of motorcycles," "Parts of driving, transmission and operating units," "Light and small passenger cars, less than 2000 ml cylinder capacity, including chassis" (hereinafter referred to as "Light and small passenger cars"). Other leading products include those related to electronic parts, devices, and electronic circuits, such as "Electronic parts, devices, and electronic circuits, n.e.c.," "Metal oxide ICs (logic device)," and "Liquid crystal panels." 5 Comparing shipment values with the previous year's records with regard to a total of 1787 comparable products, 279 products (15.6% of the total) showed increases, while 1508 products (84.4% id.) recorded declines. The number of products whose shipment value decreased was much greater than that of products with increased shipment values. Products that showed increases in shipment value were medical-related products, such as "Medical products preparations, including preparations outside medicines" and "Vaccine, blood serum and reserved blood," and beverages, such as "Coffee drinks," "Carbonated water," "Miscellaneous soft drinks and carbonated water," and "Miscellaneous distilled, rectified and blended liquors." 6 On the other hand, products that showed decreases in shipment value were transport-related products, such as "Ordinary passenger cars," "Miscellaneous parts of motor vehicles, including parts of motorcycles," "Parts of driving, transmission and operating units," "Trucks, including tractors," and "Parts, attachments and accessories of internal combustion engines for motor vehicles," and products related to iron and steel, such as "Iron and steel scrap preparation for smelting," "Galvanized steel sheets, including galvanized steel loops," "Steel strips," "Steel for special purposes" and "Iron and steel cut products, including iron and steel cast products."
