Plaistow South Big Local 6 Issue No.8 - Summer 2016 PYM Inves ng In The Future Our last Plaistow Youth Market on Saturday April 23 rd was a huge success, even with all the bumps along the way. Our purpose was to bring the community together, invest in our young residents and help anyone interested put in prac ce their eventorganising skills. 26 stalls were allocated, of which 19 were led by young people aged 14 to 30 years and 4 by people over 30 the average age of lead stallholders was 23 years. Around 70 young people and young adults were involved in running stalls and approximately 500 people a ended the event, including West Ham MP, Lyn Brown, and 2 local Councillors. We will like to say THANK YOU to all involved in the organisa on of the market and those who came along to help during the market day, a special THANK YOU to our visitors and traders who stayed ll the end to help pack up everything. It was an exhaus ng but rewarding experience and we can t wait for the next market! The main focus of the market is to help the new genera on spread their wings and dream big, because we believe that together anything is possible. PSBL currently covers the majority of the costs of PYM, including giving bursaries to under 21 year old entrepreneurs to cover part of their expenses, which means that they can make mistakes and learn from them without the fear of losing all of their investment. Our 5 th market will be on Saturday September 3 rd on the Greenway between Barking Road and Prince Regent Lane, from 11am to 2:30pm. Come along and check out all that the traders have to offer. We have one further market this year on 3 rd December at Newham Sixth Form College. Help us do be er by sending us your feedback at lora@plaistowsouthbiglocal.org.uk or visit our Facebook page: h ps://www.facebook.com/ PlaistowYouthMarket/ If you would like to take part, as a trader or a volunteer, please contact us at lora@plaistowsouthbiglocal.org.uk. This is a fantas c way to meet new people, gain new skills and have a great me.

Plaistow South Big Local 7 Issue No.8 - Summer 2016 Jams on the Greenway Lora Toma meets Adam A ew, a young jam designer from Stra ord Adam the pastry guy came to life at an event in 2012 as a hobby that quickly grew from 6 flavours to 40. His packed, colourful stall has now featured in all 4 of our PYMs - perhaps even 5 by the me you read this! With a fun and retro style Adam A ew creates an experience for the customer that is unique, trying to remind people how things once were. Ingredients start off as one thing and become something completely different. Adam also likes to create new and fun things people will enjoy and remember. To make the experience as unique as possible he designs his own labels and a ends to his social media so, if you ever delicious jarred goods for us to enjoy all year round. Adam s advice for anyone thinking of staring a new adventure: Don`t be afraid to try something new and different, if it doesn`t work at least you have tried, for me it has worked very well. Always be prepared with all the things you will need to sell at a market, bags, change napkins for food, business cards etc. contact him via Facebook, he will be at the other end of the conversa on. His personal favourite jams are Pineapple and the tropical flavours I make, as they are different from what you see in the supermarket and you can t buy them easily either. He also talks about his biggest challenge - making sure the jams are set, making sure they do not go mouldy, sealing the jars properly and keeping them away from the sun and heat in a dry storage place. Contact Adam at Adampastryguy@hotmail.com via his Facebook page: h ps://www.facebook.com/adampastryguy/ or come and meet him in person at out next PYM, 3rd September on The Greenway between Prince Regent Lane and Barking Road. Plaistow South Big Local 8 Issue No.8 - Summer 2016 PSBL s First Green Residents of Egham Road have benefi ed from PSBL s first bash at a make-over for a local green space! In partnership with Groundwork, and carried out with the help of a fantas c group of volunteers from corporate sponsor BNY Mellon, we spent a day building a green planter wall to help make the square in the middle of Egham Road (off Holborn Road) more contained and safe. Residents and their children joined in on a sunny Thursday at the end of June, working alongside the volunteer team and PSBL members to construct a 22 metre long planter (extended to 28 metres on the front), fill it with around 10000 litres of soil and mulch, and plant it up with a great range of beau ful and hardy young plants, which will eventually spread to planter.
