The Belt and Road Initiative The Belt and Road Initiative, proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping during his visits to Central and Southeast Asia in September and October 2013, aims to build a Silk Road Economic Belt and a 21st Century Maritime Silk Road with related countries. Its route will run through the world s three major continents Asia, Africa and Europe. The Trans Eurasia International Rail Transport is an important component of the Silk Road Economic Belt.

Brief Introduction of Trans Eurasia International Rail Transport(1) The Trans Eurasia International Rail Transport mainly refers to the China-Europe freight trains, which are marshaled freight trains carrying containerized cargo, connecting China and Europe. The first pilot China-Europe freight train departed from Chongqing (headed to Duisburg, DE) on March 19, 2011, and it begun to flourish in 2013, when the Belt and Road Initiative was proposed. Up till September, 2016, there had been more than 2000 trains running between China different cities and Europe, including westbound and eastbound. Up till now, there are 8 main railway lines running steady and constantly, 6 railway lines running intermittently, while many new lines started their first train in 2016 and not sure how long they will last. Since June 8, 2016, all China-Europe freight trains started to use the same brand China Railway Express according to the government request.

Brief Introduction of Trans Eurasia International Rail Transport(2) According to different exit ports of China-Europe freight trains, the railway routes could be divided into three lines, west, central and east line. West line: refers to railway lines exit China from Alashankou (or Horgos), Xinjiang province, which is located in northwest China; Central line: refers to railway lines exit China from Erenhot, Inner Mongolia, which is located in north central border; East line: refers to railway lines exit China from Manzhouli, Inner Mongolia, which is located in northeast border of China. The transit distance of west line is the shortest to Europe, and the trains running west line are the fastest; the east line is the longest line to Europe, but they arrive in Russia very quickly. We are mainly introducing the 8 steady railway lines in this introduction.
