The City of Durban or Ethekwini, is a place of fusion. It is the largest city in the KwaZulu-Natal province. The city has an intense gusto for life and has a diverse range of cultures. Durban is the venue for one of the two semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup and with its humid weather; it is bound to be a tourist hot spot during the tournament. Zulu and English are the most common languages in Durban. Transport Overview The City of Durban will offer visitors and residents safe and easily accessible public transport during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Rail, bus and other existing services i.e. metered taxis and car rentals will cater for a wide variety of transport requirements, and will ensure that the Moses Mabhida Stadium, the FIFA Fan Fest and the public viewing areas (PVAs) are adequately served. Event-related public transport will be added to the regular public transport system i.e. an airport shuttle to the King Shaka International Airport, a stadium shuttle to the Moses Mabhida Stadium and Park and Ride services. World Cup Overlay Services Airport Shuttle Service An airport-to-city service will run from King Shaka International Airport, via the accommodation zones to the north of the City (Umhlanga) and the Durban Beachfront, to Central Transport Hub in the CBD. Stadium Shuttle Service and Priority Pedestrian Network The Moses Mabhida Stadium is located in the north of the Inner City within close proximity to the rail network and some accommodation zones, providing spectators with the options of either taking the Stadium Shuttle from the Central Transport Hub or using rail and dropping off at the Moses Mabhida Station and walking to the venue. Priority Pedestrian Network The ethekwini Municipality has developed a Priority Pedestrian Network that links accommodation zones and areas with extensive parking to either the Stadium, Fan Park Area, nearest rail station or the Central Transport Hub. 50 Getting In By plane Durban International Airport (formerly Louis Botha Airport) is located 15km southwest of the city centre. The following airlines offer domestic service to/from Durban: 1time, Airlink, British Airways, Interlink, Kulula, Mango, and South African Airlines. The following airlines offer international service to/from Durban: Airlink (to/ from Maputo), Air Mauritius (to/from Mauritius), and Emirates (to/from Dubai). By train The central train station is in the city centre. Spoornet operates daily inter-city trains to Johannesburg and Pietermaritzburg, with a weekly service to Bloemfontein, Kimberley and Cape Town. You can also get to Port Elizabeth or East London by changing trains in Bloemfontein. MetroRail operates frequent commuter trains to various suburbs of Durban and towns nearby (such as Pinetown and the resort towns of both the south coast (e.g. Kelso and Park Ryne) and the north coast). By bus All national carriers and the Baz Bus offer regular services to Durban. By boat Some cruise ships dock in Durban, but generally there are limited one-way entries by boat to Durban. Park n Ride Services Bus shuttle services will be provided from three Park & Ride sites located at the Pavilion, Galleria and Gateway regional shopping centres via the Central Transport Hub to the Stadium. Event Venue Plans Stadium Area The Moses Mabhida Stadium located to the north of the Inner City. The shuttle service from the Central Transport Hub will pick up and drop off spectators at the stadium. On non-match days, for the full duration of the event, the following roads in the vicinity of the stadium will be closed or will have restricted access: Only Isaiah Ntshangase Rd closed. Match Days: Weekend or Public Holiday Closures begin the night before. Sandile Thusi (Argyle) closed from Umgeni Road to Playfair. MY Ave (ex NMR) closed from Innes to Somtseu. Match Days: Weekdays Northbound side of MY Ave closed night before. Southbound closed from 08h30. Semi Final Match Closure from the night beforeboth sides of MY Ave. Fan Park and CBD Wide Area The Central Transport Hub shuttle service is located at the Centrum site within the Inner City, approximately 1.7km and 1km from the Stadium and Beach Activation Zone respectively. This will be the transport terminal for shuttle services, tourist transport and airport shuttle, as well as links to the Inner City Distribution System and metered taxi services. Durban s official Fan Fest area is located in the central beachfront area the New Beach area which is within the Beach Activation Zone. Four access points have been identified to the Fan Fest. Two are located on Pedestrian Boulevard and two are located along OR Tambo (Marine) Parade.
