SYMBOLS OF SPAIN
SPAIN
FLAG The Spanish flag consists of three horizontal stripes: red, yellow and red; being the yellow of double width that each of the red. It was adopted on October the 5th 1981 with all its elements, including the coat of arms.
COAT OF ARMS It is composed of several parts: A Royal Crown symbolizing the Spanish monarchy. Columns that symbolize the Pillars of Hercules, incorporated into the shield by Carlos I. They flank the shield and bear the slogan: "Plus Ultra" (hereafter). The central is formed by the barracks symbolizing the medieval realms that make up Spain: -First quarter: coat of arms of the Kingdom of Castile, represented by the Castle. -Second quarter: coat of arms of the Kingdom of León, represented by a crowned lion. -Third quarter: coat of arms of the Crown of Aragon, represented by the bars of Aragon. -Fourth quarter: coat of arms of the Kingdom of Navarre, represented by strings. A pomegranate which represented the Kingdom of Granada. Three flowers of lis in the center of the coat of arms which represent the House of Bourbon, the current reigning dynasty in Spain.
ANTHEM The anthem of Spain is the Royal March, formerly known as the Livestock March. King Carlos III declared it March of Honor the 3rd of September 1770, but it was already used in public events which the King or Queen attended to. It is one of the more ancient hymns of Europe. Although the National Anthem has no official lyrics, several versions have been created.
ANDALUSIA
FLAG The history of the flag of Andalusia isn t clear, but it is believed that it comes from the 11th century and from different battles that took place in Al-Ándalus. Its evolution has left us a three horizontal striped flag, with two green stripes and a white one among them. It is in use since the 20 th century.
COAT OF ARMS It shows the shape of young Hercules holding and taming two lions between the Pillars of Hercules, which were supposed to be placed in the Strait of Gibraltar. The columns are closed by a bow in which the words Dominator Hercules Fundator can be read over the Andalusian flag and under all, the words Andalucía por sí para España y la humanidad can be read, also over the Andalusian flag. The creator of this coat of arms was Blas Infante.
ANTHEM It is a musical composition made by José Castillo Díaz with the lyrics of Blas Infante. The music is inspired by a chant Blas heard of in Archidona. The lyrics appeal Andalusians to mobilise. It was presented in 1936 and adopted in 1981, after Francoism.
GRANADA
FLAG It is formed by two vertical stripes of the same size. The left one is crimson and the right one, green. It was first used as Granada s symbol in 1980.
COAT OF ARMS The first time it was used was in 1843, while Isabella II of Spain reigned. It is divided in three parts: the first one, the Catholic Monarchs on their thrones with their crowns, sword and sceptre; the second one, the Torre de la Vela with a Spanish flag and the third one, a grenade. It has a border and a golden ribbon around
