GRAND CANYON MODEL RAILROADERS MAIN LINE NOVEMBER - DECEMBER, 2012 Volume 21 Number 11 PRESIDENTʼS MESSAGE by John Draftz The November meeting is a go! The simplified explanation is that with Cal-Stewart having switched to the first weekend in November, that freed up the third weekend. Thus we ll meet the third weekend, the 17 th, same time, same place. The theme will be A Favorite Holiday Car. Notice that the holiday is unspecified - your choice. It would be great if everyone would bring at least one. We were going to try an electronic ballot for the proposed change to the by-laws regarding the policy book but have run into a little delay. Since the election ballot is due out, we ll simply include the by-law change with that ballot to save on mailing expense. There s an opening for a BoD member. If you would be willing to serve, please let Dave Brown (480-650-5336 or eaglefour@juno.com) or Bill Lazenby (602-558-9222 or blcycle@msn.com) know ASAP. It s still not too late to have your name added. Railfair was a success. We did, however, encounter a problem with the mobile layout namely the summer heat moved things out of alignment. A discussion item at this past BoD meeting was how do we protect the mobile layout from the elements? The trailer was recently modified to allow it to fit into a normal garage. The only problem now is finding a garage. Anyone know of a garage with an open stall? Several possible options were discussed but no solution readily identified. A solution may be as simple as an overhead cover to protect the trailer from direct sun and from rain. If you have any suggestions, please contact a BoD member. The swap meet at Adobe Dam was not only a sellout but the space where we normally display was sold out, thus our displays weren t needed. We ll see if the same is true next March. On Saturday, November 10 th, from 10-3 we ll have the mobile layout or the modules at the annual Rails, Rods & Steel Wheels car show at Pioneer Park in Mesa. This is a fund raiser that benefits the Pioneer Park train and our display helps the cause. The holiday display at Adobe will be the first three weekends in December. We ll have the mobile layout on display thus will need volunteers to operate it. The dates and times are: Nov 30 - Dec 1, Dec 7-8 and Dec 14-15. Times are 5:30-8 pm each day. The Board is always at work!

On Saturday, December 15 th, from 9-3, we ll have the modules at the Paradise Valley United Methodist Church for their annual Christmas display. This year s theme is the Polar Express. If you can help, please send me an e-mail (jzdraftz@cox.net) to let me know. We d like three or four members at least. The October meeting featured drag races. The winners are noted elsewhere in the newsletter along with the annual raffle prize winners. The Christmas party will be Sunday, December 2 nd at 4pm. See elsewhere for more details. Last year s gathering was enjoyed by all who attended. Come if you can. November 10 - GCMR modular train display at Mesa Pioneer Park. (See President s Message for details) November 17 - GCMR meeting - Our Saviour s Lutheran Church - Theme: bring your favorite holiday themed car (any holiday) December 2 - Joint GCMR - TCA - P&P Christmas Party. Mesa Mariot. See registration flyer this issue. December 15 - GCMR train display at Paradise Valley United Methodist Church. (See President s Message for details) OTHER TRAIN EVENTS November 24 - Turkey Meet, Scottsdale November 25 - Turkey Meet auction, Scottsdale January 11, 12 - Gadsden Pacific Museum swap meet. Tucson Expo Center, 3750 E. Irvington. Info: TucsonTrainShow@gmail.com January 19, 20 - Bostwick Collection Auction - Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church 1500 W. Maryland Ave, Phoenix MEETING NOTES Old Business Trains races at the October meeting CALENDAR GCMR meets are held at 9:00am in the Parish Hall of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church at 1212 E Glendale Avenue in Phoenix, located on the north side of Glendale, just east of the traffic light at 12th St. It is easily reached off the Glendale Exit of either I-17 or SR 51. Go east from I-17 or west from SR 51 to 12th Street. + The Board is still working on the revised Policy Book + Change to doing future By Laws changes via electronic voting. Paul Boston noted he was becoming stymied in setting this up for GCMR due to a requirement that he be the administrator of this routine for the P&P but the program will only allow one user. We may have to use the P&P site to do this or another possibility is to use Bill Rogers (Board Member) as the administrator and use his computer. More on this later. Board of Directors President:! + Ballot for officers 2012 The question arose as to whether we need to still do a Ballot if there is no opposition? Conclusion: Ballots are still required, but can be mailed with a return envelope or put into the Mainline. + Further discussion on member refund/ expense policy. Suggested as a topic for the next Board Meeting. + The budget for 2013 was presented by Treasurer Glenn Saber. Highlights included: Income & Expenses for Raffle Tickets, etc. Swap Meet Expenses & Income Profit: Averages about $3,000 per year, mostly from the annual Swap Meet which is the big income producer. It was noted that even without it, we still break even. We receive $100 from Railfair plus tips. New Business + Ralph Treichel reported that advance reservations are required for the TCA Christmas Party, so the sooner the better. They must be in at least by the Turkey Meet on the 24 th of November. He noted that a good time was enjoyed by all at the Christmas Party in 2011. + It was questioned whether we should consider to meeting on the 3 rd Saturday each November. The consensus was to wait until we see what happens. However, we need to get input from the Cal Stewart meet to see what their schedule will be. (Editor s note: at Cal Stewart, it was reported that they will be moving back to their regular third weekend in November date for next and succeeding years.) + Jack Eaton discussed problems with our Mobile Layout. Because the trailer is exposed to the elements it is deteriorating fast. Do we need a permanent cover to be made for the Trailer? Glenn Saber noted that special fabrics are available for a custom cover that could be made. George Bean said that solutions would be either a cocoon cover or inside a shelter. A Standard Inter Modal Container could work for maybe a $1600 or $1800 cost. Ken Barnes said he would check on cost and availability of this option. Could we put a Inter Modal Cover on Sahuaro Central property? John Draftz will check on this possibility. This would be a substantial cost and the Club would need to approve this option. Glenn Saber s 1918 Electric Dave Brown s P&P switch engine + The Turkey Meet date conflict and the Christmas party prevents our holding a regular November and December meeting. However, the Cal Stewart swap meet is the first week of November this year so we could meet on the 17 th of November. Dave Brown moved that we should meet on the 17 th. Approved. + The three upcoming events were noted: Saturday, November 10 is at Pioneer Park in Mesa for the Rails Rods & Steel Wheels show. We will be running from 9:00 to 3:00 pm. Will our Mobile Trailer have enough space to get in there? John Draftz will check it out. + Dave Brown mentioned the P&P Christmas Festival where we will put up the Modules (S & O Gauge) at the Methodist Church Campus off of Lincoln Drive in Scottsdale on the 15 th of

December. More on this later. + At the Turkey Meet on the 24 th of November we will run the Mobile Layout on Saturday only, weather permitting. Check with Beth Stange on the location for the Trailer. +Beth s father recently died, and the club will send her a card. The Jim Bong Christmas Train will be available at the Christmas Church run, check with Ken Barnes. Glenn Saber, Bill East, Dave Brown, Rod Johnson & Jack Eaton said they could be available for this event. Show and Tell Lots of folks enjoyed our layout Dave Brown: Magna Arizona Engine, P&P No. 7 Engine with boiler and light added Glenn Saber: 1918 Lionel #156 electric. Glenn said he would use this for the Trolley Races John Draftz: 1983 Convention Car and two and four wheeled ore cars in Tin Plate. Each tipple (dump) and the banquet car all were in a common design Rod Johnson: Rio Grande box car in Halloween colors GCMR AT RAILFAIR photos by Dave Brown Even kids thought our modular layouts were awesome! Kids still love toy trains The correct posture for setting up the display is critical to a successful weekend

The modular layout A neat winter display NEXT UP: CAL STEWART The West Coast public got to enjoy the GCMR modular layout at Cal Stewart in its new venue at the Ontario Convention Center. One of the delights of Cal Stewart is the number of layouts by different groups on display. Here is a sampling. Our guys at work Southern California S Gaugers The featured display honored the passing of Dick Meyer, and his Richart Company s beautiful reproductions.
