DURBIN CROSSING POND PRESS Happy February Durbin Crossing! We field a lot of questions about birds in stormwater ponds: are they good for the ponds, are they bad for the ponds, can we feed them? My answers are usually: not really, not really, and probably shouldn t. If you re confused, allow me to explain. I won t bore you with scientific names, but the water birds in our ponds could fall within two categories: semidomesticated and wild. I consider the former to be the more problematic of the two. Canada Geese are the most common semi-domesticated birds we see, and are known for being numerous, territorial, and filthy (I don t think there s anyone in our company who hasn t been chased by them). Theoretically, based on the present population and the size of the pond, the waste products from geese can influence nutrient levels and spur algae growth. Additionally, many geese have found North Florida such a cozy environment that they ve thrown off the snow bird moniker and remain here all year long, which makes their presence (and excretions) a concern come summer. Geese are mostly herbivorous; they will gladly feed on aquatic vegetation, and they have an annoying habit of digging into pond banks and exacerbating erosion. They also have the tendency to become dependent on human feeding. Ducks have similar problems, mostly from non-migratory species like the Muscovy, which tend to form large familial groups. Wild species like mallards, mottled, whistling, and wood ducks are more likely to be found in small, roving groups. The problem with feeding birds like Canada Geese and Muscovy Ducks, is that they often become dependent on the human food-source. This can keep them living in an area with low-quality wild nutrition, being fed low-quality human food. When they are young, unlimited high protein, high carbohydrate food (like bread) can lead to a condition where the wings develop improperly, and they can become deformed to the point the bird cannot fly- a condition called angel wings. Human-based feed and it s general lack of proper nutrition can also hinder their immune systems, which makes the birds more likely to succumb to natural illnesses or diseases. Wild birds are usually far more reclusive and less interested in human offerings, and so don t usually become a problem around ponds. The most common wild birds I see around Florida ponds include blue herons, anhinga, wood storks, white Ibis, killdeer, and snowy egrets (and many, many more). They each have their own specific diets that may or may not be sustained by our stormwater ponds, so they tend to rove from pond to pond, much like the wild duck species. These shy denizens of our stormwater ponds are best enjoyed at a distance, which will make them more likely to return for future appreciation. --Katie Cabanillas - Aquatic Systems, Accounts Representative/Biologist Jacksonville Division
